I am a proud alumna from Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia where I played soccer as a Central Midfielder for four years. After college, I relocated to Baltimore, where I met my husband, Adam. We live in Baltimore, Maryland with our son and our maltipoo.

Judith’s design career began at the age of four, designing block furniture and clothing for her troll dolls. After completing her design degree, she worked in medical, commercial, and hospitality design. She switched to the manufacturing segment of the industry after working with a national retailer in showroom merchandising design and training, which included development and implementation of business processes and installation programs.

As one of the professional instructors for the NKBA, she offered a comprehensive learning experience to designers in North America. As an honorary founding member of the Jenn-Air Design Advisory Council, she provided perspective on Jenn-Air and other Whirlpool Corporation brands.

Judith is a frequent contributor to the industry by speaking on a variety of topics of interest for both the design professional and homeowner. She has lectured frequently at KBIS and other trade events about the business side of interior design. Judith has also been a featured guest for “A Well-Designed Business” with LuAnn Nigara at her trade event and on her podcasts. In 2021, she was recognized by Kitchen & Bath Design News as a Leading Innovator.

Her design practice serves a single zip code (Vashon Island, WA) where she is known for doing “weird” really well. In 2014 she and her husband established a non-profit to honor the life of their son, Rj Ontiveros. As director for the non-profit, Rjs Kids, her current project is the construction of an epic multi-use outdoor recreation park that includes skate boarding, a pumptrack, and public art features. In support of underserved community members, the project includes apprentice training programs partnered with skilled craftsman and artists to create art features in the park.

NKBA Hosts Second Students of the Industry Night

The association again invited local college professors and students to learn about membership benefits and connect with industry professionals.
NKBA CEO Bill Darcy and Kelly Ann Ryan, NKBA Learning Programs Manager, with students and faculty from Northampton Community College and Mid Atlantic Chapter President Brianna Weiler, of New Hope Cabinets, Baths & Kitchens by Charles Weiler, at NKBA’s second Students of the Industry night on Sept. 27, 2023, at the association’s headquarters in Bethlehem, PA.

Last month, NKBA invited college students and professors from local colleges, as well as chapter officers, to its second of two Students of the Industry Night events this year. Held on Sept. 27 at the association’s headquarters in Bethlehem, PA, this event was an opportunity for students to discover more about NKBA student membership, learning initiatives such as badges and certifications, and much more. 

The event, attended by Northampton Community College faculty and students, is an example of the foundation NKBA builds to support students in the industry so that they can flourish in their future K&B careers. The students also had the opportunity to speak with Mid Atlantic Chapter President Brianna Weiler, of New Hope Cabinets, Baths & Kitchens by Charles Weiler, and two designers from Morris Black Designs, Christine Shorr, CKBD, Mid Atlantic Chapter member and Marissa Monte, Susquehanna Valley Chapter member.

The night started off with Kelly Ann Ryan, NKBA Learning Programs Manager, welcoming guests and introducing them to the association, explaining that NKBA is the world’s leading trade association for the kitchen and bath industry and owner of KBIS. She then outlined the benefits of joining NKBA as a student member, which is free thanks to sponsorship from Sub-Zero Group, Inc., and how entering the Student Design Competition, sponsored by Fisher & Paykel, can raise their profile. She also noted how students can continue to benefit from NKBA membership even beyond graduation.

The event ended with networking, where students had a chance to ask questions to and seek advice from Brianna Weiler.

“I was very excited to meet the Interior Design students from Northampton Community College and speak with them on a personal level. I could easily relate to them and wanted to share my experiences of being involved with the NKBA for nearly a decade, beginning as a student studying Interior Design and now as a Design Professional within the Kitchen & Bath Industry. I sincerely look forward to seeing the talent and creativity of these particular students when I join Asst. Professor Daniel Ebner in critiquing their design projects,” said Weiler.

NKBA Kitchen Trends Summit A Success

Attendees toured the building, saw product demos and learned about future kitchen trends at GE Appliances’ new CoCREATE space in Stamford, CT.  

NKBA’s recent Kitchen Trends Summit at GE Appliances’ CoCREATE space in Stamford, CT focused on what consumers want in a kitchen now and in the future, with a mix of programming that featured a focus group, a one-on-one talk, and an expert panel discussion. Attendees of the event also received personalized tours of the new space that Michelle Donovan, Director, Marketing for GE Appliances, described as a “community creative playground”.  The CoCREATE space, which officially opened last Friday, includes coworking spaces and a resource area for designers.

Those who attended the event, including a large group from NKBA’s Manhattan Chapter, received a pre-opening walk-through of CoCREATE’s different areas including The Experience Center, The Maker Space and The Factory. Afterwards, attendees gathered to hear “One on One with Sarah Robertson, AKBD, Studio Dearborn: What do Consumers Really Want from the Design of their Kitchen?”. In the conversation with NKBA’s Pamela McNally, Robertson discussed clients’ evolving needs, notably functionality and storage. “People are seeing beyond the aesthetics now,” said Robertson.

Moderated by Tricia Zach, Head of Research at NKBA, the panel discussed topics ranging from influences driving future kitchen design to the customization of design. 2022 NKBA Kitchen & Bath Hall of Fame inductee Zach Elkin.

Zach Elkin to Retire: Zach Elkin, whose kitchen and bath industry career has spanned more than 40 years, announced his retirement from Beko Home Appliances USA, effective at the end of the year. Elkin, a 2022 NKBA Kitchen & Bath Hall of Fame inductee, started his career at Sears Holdings Corp. He served in executive roles at Bosch Siemens Home Appliances Corp., where he oversaw the Thermador, Bosch and Gaggenau brands, and he helped launch LG Electronics’ Signature Kitchen Suite luxury appliances, where he was general manager of SKS and LG Builder Sales. He joined Beko USA as president in 2020.

Cyncly Names Danner SVP: Chuck Danner has joined design software solutions company Cyncly as Senior Vice President of Financial Solutions. In his new role, Danner spearheads efforts to deliver payments technology into the company’s design software. He has more than 25 years of experience in the payment and financial technologies industry, including most recently as General Manager of Payments for Nextech Systems. Learning With Alabama: The Alabama Chapter will present its annual CEU Day, in which members may earn 0.4 Continuing Education Units, on Oct. 19 from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM at the Alabama Power Co., 600 18th Street North, Birmingham. Topics include Architectural Photography, Hardware Customization, Induction Cooking and Designing for Wellness. Breakfast and lunch, sponsored by Jennifer Thompson, are included. Early-Bird Rates Still Available for KBIS Registration: NKBA members still have time to register for KBIS at the discounted rate of $50 for a three-day expo pass through Dec. 14. The VFTI package, which includes expo access and all live and on-demand KBIS Voices From The Industry educational sessions is $575 for members. Non-members may register for the expo only for $100 and VFTI package for $775. Microwave Market Seen Exceeding $15 Billion by 2031: The global market for microwave ovens is seen growing at a compound annual rate of 4.6 percent between 2022 and 2031, hitting $15.6 billion, according to Allied Market Research. In 2021, the market was valued at $9.8 billion. Growth is driven by factors including consumers’ rising disposable income, especially in developing regions like China and India, as well as enhanced safety features and increasing demand for energy- and time-efficient cooking methods, the report said. Office Conversions Rising: In a post-pandemic world where many people are increasingly able to work remotely, developers and cities are exploring the glut of office space and how to convert these buildings to help mitigate a housing shortage. Observers say converting commercial buildings to residential use can be expensive, and would likely result in luxury units with numerous amenities to justify high rents or selling prices to make the project worthwhile. Whatever the cost, every one of those converted units will need a kitchen and at least one bathroom. Business Insider has more.

Last Chance to Nominate for NKBA’s K&B Hall of Fame and National Elections

September is an important month for NKBA as the association accepts nominations for its Hall of Fame as well as self-nominations for National Volunteer Committees. Both of these rewarding opportunities close on Sept. 29th at 5 pm ET, so be sure to review the below about each respective opportunity!

NKBA Kitchen & Bath Hall of Fame 

Since NKBA introduced the Kitchen & Bath Industry Hall of Fame in 1989, the association has honored over 90 outstanding individuals, recognizing their impact on and contributions to the growth and integrity of the K&B industry. Nominations are currently being accepted for the potential next inductee…but not for long! Nominations will be closing soon, on Sept. 29 at 5 pm ET.

After nominations have been submitted, nominees are reviewed by a standing program committee from the member-nominated list for final approval by the NKBA Board of Directors. And then, if a final inductee is selected, they will be recognized for their important involvement in the industry during the induction ceremony at KBIS 2024 in Las Vegas that takes place during the Kitchen & Bath Design + Industry Awards, sponsored by Miele, 2020, Ferguson and Perlick. When inducted, they will be joining the ranks of past K&B Hall of Fame inductees — like 2023’s inductee, Steve Feldman, Founder and CEO, Renovation Angel, who was presented with the honor by Suzie Williford, NKBA’s EVP and Chief Strategy Officer, who called him a “visionary who has changed the dynamic of the business, all while helping to protect the environment.”

NKBA National Volunteer Committee Elections 

In September, NKBA also started accepting self-nominations for its national elections, and on Sept. 29 at 5 pm ET, these elections will be coming to a close. Taking on a national volunteer national position is an opportunity to take volunteerism from the local to the national level by serving on the association’s Board of Directors (BOD) or one of its key standing committees. Open positions include:

  • Board of Directors (BOD) -Two positions
  • Chapter Leadership Committee (CLC) – Two positions
  • Leadership Recruitment Committee (LRC) -Two positions
  • KBIS Exhibitor Committee (KEC) -Three positions

To be considered for the Board of Directors, Chapter Leadership Committee or Leadership Recruitment Committee, candidates must be NKBA members in good standing. Nominations are open until Sept. 29 at 5 pm ET, so be sure to apply by the deadline.

NKBA Hosts Students of the Industry Night

The association invited local college professors and students to learn about membership benefits and connect with industry professionals.

Earlier this month, NKBA invited college students and professors from local colleges, as well as chapter officers, to its first of two Students of the Industry Night events this year. Held on Sept. 11 at the association’s headquarters in Bethlehem, PA, this event was an opportunity for students to discover more about NKBA student membership, learning initiatives such as badges and certifications, and much more. 

The event, attended by Lehigh Carbon Community College faculty and students, is an example of the foundation NKBA builds to support students in the industry so that they can flourish in their future K&B careers. The students also had the opportunity to speak with Susquehanna Valley Chapter and Mid Atlantic Chapter officers, who were also present.

The night started off with Kelly Ann Ryan, NKBA Learning Programs Manager, welcoming guests and introducing them to the association, explaining that NKBA is the world’s leading trade association for the kitchen and bath industry and owner of KBIS. She then outlined the benefits of joining NKBA as a student member, which is free thanks to sponsorship from Sub-Zero Group, Inc., and how entering the Student Design Competition, sponsored by Fisher & Paykel, can raise their profile. She also noted how students can continue to benefit from NKBA membership even beyond graduation.

Afterwards, Lindsay Franco, Senior Manager of NKBA’s Learning Department, reviewed key Initiatives such as current NKBA Badges, Certifications and Continuing Education opportunities for earning CEUs required to maintain Certifications and Badges.

The event ended with networking where students connected with nearby industry professionals and business owners, as well as Chapter officers. “It was great to speak one-on-one with the students from Lehigh Carbon Community College. They impressed me with their questions and their eagerness to begin their careers. I feel extremely confident in the future of the design industry!” said Brianna Weiler, Mid Atlantic Chapter President, of New Hope Cabinets, Baths & Kitchens by Charles Weiler.
