Potential sites are under consideration in the U.S., and the new facility is expected to begin operations at the end of 2024, ultimately with a workforce of 150. The new factory in North America will serve the U.S., Canada and Mexico with products, mainly cooking appliances, and provide shorter lead times and reduced transportation, resulting in less environmental impact. This will be Miele’s 16th production facility. It currently has eight plants in Germany, another six throughout Europe and one in China. Miele’s U.S. headquarters is in Princeton, NJ. More info here.

Caesarstone’s latest launch: Surfacing company Caesarstone has expanded its offering with a new porcelain collection and a natural stone line. Designs include natural marble, concrete and metal, featuring heightened veining, palpable textures and patterns. The porcelain offers the same non-porous health and maintenance advantages as its quartz selections. The company says its porcelain is highly durable, withstands stains and scratches, is heat-resistant and suitable for indoor or outdoor applications. Learn more here.

What You Will Learn

Are you prepared for the sweeping changes defining the Surface industry in 2026? The traditional landscape of the Quartz, Tile, and Stone sectors is undergoing a transformation. Driven by federal silica-related lawsuits, the business is facing new strict safety certifications, dramatically altering fabrication costs and current business models. Simultaneously, it is up against an aging workforce. For every five baby boomers retiring from the trades, only two candidates from younger generations are coming behind them, threatening a significant loss of critical institutional memory, “the brain drain.”

While these challenges are creating disruption in the current marketplace, we believe this disruption brings with it unprecedented opportunity. This high-energy, data-driven webinar offers a strategic blueprint for thriving in this new era. We will explore the transition from manual, analog labor to a technical, data-driven trade that prioritizes both safety and entrepreneurial acumen. We will demonstrate how transformative change is possible by embracing innovation into every facet of your business (fabrication, installation, people, business model). Whether you are a fabricator, installer, designer, or contractor, this session will equip you with actionable insights to build a resilient, forward-thinking, and highly profitable business.

Learning Objectives:

  • Market Trends: Webinar participants will learn how the recent federal lawsuits and aging workforce are significantly impacting the Quartz, Tile, and Stone sectors in terms of increased costs, shifting liabilities and the upcoming “brain drain” and labor shortage.
  • Innovation: Learn how the kitchen and bath industry can embrace innovation by integrating new technologies, the digital fluency of the next generation of workers and co-op business models to not only tackle these challenges but transform the industry for the future.
  • Skilled Trades Initiatives: Learn how the NKBA NextUp Program and Building Tomorrow’s Skilled Trades Workforce Program as well as business and government initiatives are showcasing the “New High Tech Trades”, supporting succession plans from Gen 1 to Gen 2, creating mentorship and apprentice opportunities as well as encouraging conversation through educational and networking events for the industry.

SME Corey Klassen Discusses Revamping NKBA K&B Planning Guidelines

K&B Subject Matter Expert Corey Klassen, RID, NCIDQ, CMKBD, reveals the evolution behind an industry standard.

By NKBA Staff

The NKBA’s Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines have been the industry’s gold standard for years, serving as an essential reference for design professionals. Published since 1992, it is the most complete collection of illustrations and planning recommendations available in one source, covering the planning and installation of beautiful, efficient, code-compliant kitchens and baths and other interior spaces.

As the industry evolves, the Planning Guidelines must be adapted to changing codes and regulations, technology and material advancements, and design and building trends. This is a painstaking, highly detailed process.

Enter Subject Matter Expert Corey Klassen, RID, NCIDQ, CMKBD, an award-winning interior designer and owner of Articulated Design Studio (founded as Corey Klassen Interior Design in 2011) in Vancouver, British Columbia. Klassen has been a leading expert of the Planning Guidelines revisions for the last two editions, including the most recent fifth edition, with the collaboration of other SMEs and key stakeholders, including educators, practitioners, and accessibility advocates.

The transition from the third edition to the fourth was “a monumental lift,” and the new fifth edition has even more refinement, said Klassen, who traveled from Vancouver to the U.S. to take the NKBA certification exams – AKBD, CKD, and CBD. “Our overall objective was to increase comprehension through clarity and consolidation, and that meant paying very close attention to our word choices and layout so that the Planning Guidelines can be more universally understood.”

Klassen revealed that some key updates and revisions to the fifth edition included further defining the best practices for accessibility in “Chapter 1: Human Factors and Accessibility,” expanding storage systems and finishes in “Chapter 6: Interior Environment Planning,” and extensive clarity on ventilation, power, lighting, and illumination planning in “Chapter 7: Building Systems Planning.”

“A new comprehension tool we introduced was the use of notes after each guideline, where we were able to capture additional context, related factors and considerations, and additional short-form context.”

Klassen said their top challenge was to bring parity across international borders. “I often remark to my U.S. colleagues that while we may speak and read similar English, that closeness can still have great diversity and nuance in building codes. I think we all understand that model codes, such as the International Residential Code, change every four years, but a key driver was a lesser-known compliance publication in Canada called CSA/ASC B652 Accessible Dwellings (2023). What was remarkable to all the subject matter experts, including myself, was how much further along this technical publication was in accessibility, and we embraced it through many lively discussions, researching and sourcing supporting reference materials, and with conversations in each of our communities.”

Inclusivity is central to Klassen’s overall design approach and played a significant role in revising the fifth edition of the guidelines.

“Terms such as ‘design from the margins’ and ‘nothing for them without them’ are fundamentals that help define how empathy is applied in my daily routine,” Klassen said, adding that it was important for individuals to be able to synthesize the Planning Guidelines. “Some of the deeper challenges that we are all facing are constant cognitive overload, common language evolution, and the rate and speed at which artificial intelligence and technology are influencing us. For me, this meant that regardless of which nationality, race, physical ability, disability, or language that characterizes the reader, that the Planning Guidelines can be understood. Facts provide clarity. I think this is what my husband and I endeavor to embody in our interior design firm.”

Klassen concluded, “I have been afforded so many professional opportunities to expand my skills, knowledge, and professionalism through my membership with the NKBA. It has been a tremendous honour — I’m Canadian, it’s how we spell it — to work on, collaborate with, research, synthesize, write (and rewrite) the Planning Guidelines into this new experience for Certified Kitchen & Bath Designers, Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designers, and allied design professionals across many industry sectors.

“We owe a tremendous thank you to Doug Walter, CMKBD; Robin Rigby-Fisher, CMKBD; Judith A. Neary, CMKBD; and Cailin Thelen, CMKBD, as the subject matter experts for their contributions to the 5th edition, as well as Adrean Stephenson, CKBD of Chief Architect, Inc., who served as the primary illustrator of figures in the publication. For those considering NBKA Certifications, it will be a journey that might need reframing at times, but it’s important that we look at our learning CEU’s not just as requirements, but opportunities to study areas we wouldn’t typically practice.”

Five Questions With… Greg Rohl, Global Connect Advisor

The 30-year industry veteran shares insights for companies looking to enter the North American market

Greg Rohl is a former owner and manager at ROHL LLC, a leading luxury brand of faucets, fixtures, and accessories sourced from Western Europe, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and America. In 2016, Rohl LLC was acquired by Fortune Brands and formed the core of House of Rohl, an international collection of luxury faucet and fixture brands. Greg is the principal of therohlmodel, a learning and guidance service for the kitchen and bath industry, with a particular focus on teaching design and sales professionals a new language of luxury focused on original design, artisan craft, and wellbeing.

NKBA: Tell us about your professional background and involvement with NKBA.

Greg Rohl: Before joining the family business full-time, I worked in decorative plumbing showrooms and as an editor for an industry trade magazine and design books featuring NKBA-certified designers. In my years as an employee and owner at House of Rohl, I held many positions–from customer service to marketing to sales, ultimately serving as President of the Western Division.

Our company has always been an active supporter of NKBA at both the national and chapter levels. As a journalist, I reported on Southern California Chapter activities. For many years at House of Rohl, I was responsible for coordinating our participation at KBIS. As a consultant, I have created numerous educational presentations for the Voices from the Industry conference. I’ve been a Global Connect Advisor since 2019.

NKBA: As a Global Connect Advisor, what insights or services can you offer Global Connect members?

Greg Rohl: I focus on go-to-market strategy, product market fit, tailoring brand messages for different customer constituencies, sales management, sales training, product development, and customized educational content.

NKBA: Throughout your career, what are the most common mistakes you have seen that hamper a company’s success as they try to enter/expand in the North American market?

Greg Rohl:

  • Language Barrier: Communication challenges for owners or representatives who don’t speak English well.
  • Regional Considerations: Not realizing that the US has 4 time zones and at least 5 different regional cultures–and that different markets have different distribution players.
  • Long-term Vision: Not committing the proper time and resources–companies should commit to at least 5 years to establish a new brand.
  • Marketing Strategy: Not having a compelling, value-based story tailored for the various industry constituencies, i.e., showroom owners, consultants, designers, sales representatives, plumbers, builders, etc.
  • Joint Venture: Failing to partner with a distributor or agency that understands the market and can guide them.

NKBA: How do you see the North American market evolving, and how will this evolution impact how international brands do business here?

Greg Rohl: NKBA’s reporting on the future of the North American market indicates tremendous potential for brands that meet an unmet need, are differentiated, profitable, and dependable to work with.

NKBA: While every company’s journey is different, what is one general piece of advice you have for a company thinking of entering the North American market?

Greg Rohl: Be hungry but humble. Take time to understand the market and expect to grow a business over time by delivering value to all stakeholders–distributors, showrooms, designers, and end users. Oh, and read our book, The Corporateneur Plan, for a step-by-step example of building a successful business marketing luxury European products in the US.

Introducing the New CKBD Exam Bundle

The latest update now recognizes industry-experienced designers

Beginning June 1st, industry-experienced designers who are NKBA members can now apply for the Certified Kitchen and Bath Designer (CKBD) association certification. Previously, applicants had to possess a professional qualification or an eligible degree to qualify for certification.

This evolution of our certification program recognizes aspiring applicants who have obtained their industry knowledge through work experience.

Certification confirms to clients and employers that a designer’s existing skills, industry understanding, and advanced knowledge of NKBA’s guidelines equip them to create functional, safe, and beautiful kitchen and bath spaces.

The NKBA remains committed to an impartial certification process, ensuring all decisions are based strictly on established criteria and objective evidence. Certification is available to practicing kitchen and bath designers who apply NKBA-recommended guidelines and drawing standards to kitchen and bath design.

Certification requires CKBD candidates to demonstrate a strong understanding of NKBA’s guidelines and drawing standards, along with the ability to apply them effectively. Designers pursuing certification must have familiarity with these resources or should feel comfortable self-studying this material in preparation for examination. The purchase of a CKBD bundle includes a copy of the 5th Edition Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines as well as a CKBD fundamentals exam study guide.

Apply for CKBD >

Not a NKBA member? Join us now to receive all member benefits, including certification.

“Earning my CKBD certification represents not only the knowledge I have gained, but also the persistence and determination it took to reach this goal. I look forward to continuing to grow, serving my clients with excellence, and contributing to the design community with confidence and pride.”

-Susan Oh, CKBD 2026, Design Consultant, Kitchen & Bath and Appliance Specialist, Home Depot
“Beyond knowledge, the credential itself adds a recognized level of credibility that strengthens confidence in technical discussions and professional decision-making. This is especially valuable for experienced professionals, where formal recognition helps align expertise with industry trust.”

Newly Updated Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines

What’s new in the 5th edition of the industry standard

The latest iteration of the NKBA Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines is here!

This 5th edition has been prompted by the release of key code documents, specifically the 2024 International Residential Code (IRC) and the CSA B652 Accessible Dwellings 2023 (Canada).

Our committee of subject matter experts carefully evaluated the IRC for parity against the most recent edition of the National Building Code of Canada and successfully brought uniformity to kitchen and bath planning guidelines for CKBDs and CMKBDs working professionally on each side of their respective borders in the planning and design of kitchens, baths, and support spaces.

The Planning Guidelines continue to be the foundational knowledge for becoming an NKBA Certified Professional.

Key enhancements in this edition include:

  • Clearer planning methodology and guidance with dedicated integration of accessible design recommendations such as wheelchairs and mobility aids
  • Integration of the Center Concept across both kitchen and bath planning chapters, formalizing the identification of activity zones, work areas, and the specific tasks executed within each defined center
  • Expanded Interior Environment Chapter to incorporate storage systems, waterproofing, wall blocking, and backing requirements–as well as comprehensive guidance on material performance, quality standards, and sustainability in design
  • Enhanced Building Systems Guidance including power planning (especially for kitchen islands), illumination strategies, home automation integration, and ventilation requirements
  • A more condensed yet comprehensive resource so you can quickly and confidently find the critical information you need

Our heartfelt thank you to our committee experts for their steadfast dedication to ensuring that the Planning Guidelines remain well illustrated, robust, and relevant to today’s design community.

NKBA consultants and subject matter experts who contributed to the 5th Edition publication include Robin Rigby Fisher, CMKBD, CLIPP, CAPS; Corey Klassen, CMKBD, RID, NCIDQ; Judith A. Neary, CMKBD; Adrean Stephenson, CKBD; Cailin M. Thelen, CMKBD; and Doug Walter, AIA, CMKBD, CLIPP, CAPS. Special thanks to Corey Klassen, CMKBD, 5th Edition Editorial Copy Chief; Rochelle Horne, CKBD, LEED Green Associate, Peer Reviewer; and Adrean Stephenson, CKBD, Illustrator, with illustrations courtesy of Chief Architect, Inc.

“This release exemplifies the guidelines as a professional practice tool and job-aid that is logical and adaptable, ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of people occupying and using kitchens, baths, and support spaces. Thank you to the NKBA for their continued support of the association’s membership through this premier publication.”

Research

If you haven’t participated yet, don’t miss your chance—the 2027 Kitchen Trends Survey closes this week, and this year’s participation comes with even more opportunities to win.

All NKBA Chapters with 15 or more completed survey responses will be entered into a raffle. Everyone from that chapter who completes the survey will be eligible to win one of three NKBA Prize Packs filled with fan-favorite swag from L2L, including NKBA-branded lip balm, mints, measuring tape, pens, and notebooks.

In addition, every member who completes the survey will automatically be entered into a separate drawing for a chance to win one of five $500 gift cards.

Please check your email for your personal survey link and be sure to participate before the deadline. This is a great opportunity to share your perspective, represent your chapter, help shape the future of the kitchen and bath industry—and maybe pick up some fun NKBA perks along the way.

NKBA Research is excited to share that the U.S. Kitchen & Bath Market Index (KBMI) will officially launch on June 17, and during the same field period, we will also be piloting a Canadian KBMI for the first time.

We encourage all Chapter Officers and members to participate in the survey that best applies to them.

Participation in the Canadian pilot is especially important as we work to build a strong foundation for the Canadian KBMI. Our goal is to make this a successful launch so we can deliver the same meaningful insights and industry data for Canadian members that we’ve been able to provide in the U.S., while also strengthening our understanding of each market individually and of North America overall.

Please keep an eye on your email for your survey invitation. If you do not receive one and would like to participate, please reach out to marketresearch@nkba.org.

And one final reminder—if you haven’t already, we invite you to join the Kitchen & Bath Pro Hub, NKBA’s dedicated research community. It’s a great place to connect with peers, share insights, help shape the future of NKBA Research—and earn rewards along the way.

Webinars & Virtual Events

Students & Educators

Presenters wanted! Share your expertise with the next generation of designers at NKBA’s annual Student Design Symposium. This live, 2.5-hour virtual conference is scheduled for 12 PM EST on Friday, September 25. Please email kryan@nkba.org if you have a presentation idea. We are currently seeking Chapter Officers and other experts to deliver 20-minute breakout sessions via Zoom.

The inaugural NKBA | KBIS Student Mentor Program successfully wrapped up on May 1. Thank you to all who participated as mentors in this program. If you’d like to participate as a mentor in the future, we recommend watching our program’s closing webinar, which includes powerful testimonials from students and mentors. We’ll release an application for the next round of mentors this fall. The program is scheduled to run through the Spring 2027 semester.

We are grateful to KOHLER for their sponsorship in supporting the next generation of kitchen and bath professionals.

Government Relations

NKBA actively monitors legislation and public policy developments impacting the kitchen and bath industry, sharing key updates each month through our Government Relations Newsletter. A repository of newsletters, as well as additional resources to self-advocate on issues important to you, can be found on the Government Relations webpage.

Hot topics this month include:

U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC): The USITC recommends a tariff-rate quota (TRQ) on imports of quartz surface products, including slabs and fabricated quartz surface products, for a four-year period in its investigation regarding imports of quartz surface products.

U.S. Workforce Development: The U.S. Departments of Education and Labor announce a milestone in federal efforts to strengthen alignment across education and workforce systems as 21 states submit Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) State Plans to address workforce challenges as part of the Trump Administration’s America’s Talent Strategy.

U.S. Housing: The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA) rescind the 2024 Biden Administration policy that sought to implement the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) as a mandatory nationwide standard for new home construction.

Alaska: House passes Bill 314 which would add registered interior designers to the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers, and Land Surveyors and establish requirements for the practice of registered interior design while allowing unlicensed practice of interior design if the practitioner does not use the title “registered interior designer.”

We hope you benefit from the value these resources bring to you, your profession, and the kitchen & bath industry. Please reach out directly to Steven Campeau, NKBA’s Senior Manager, Global & Government Relations at scampeau@nkba.org, for any specific questions.

Registration Opens for KBC Expo 2026

Registration Opens for KBC Expo 2026 as Canada’s Kitchen & Bath Industry Builds Momentum Around a Reimagined National Gathering

Toronto, ON (May 28, 2026) — Registration officially opens June 1 for Kitchen + Bath Canada (KBC Expo) 2026, marking the next chapter for Canada’s kitchen and bath industry event experience. Taking place November 11–12, 2026, at the Toronto Congress Centre, KBC Expo will bring together designers, architects, builders, showrooms, distributors, manufacturers, and industry leaders from across Canada for two days of product discovery, education, networking, and community.

Produced by Emerald, the team behind KBIS (Kitchen & Bath Industry Show) – North America’s leading kitchen and bath event – KBC Expo is being reimagined with a stronger focus on industry connection, elevated experiences, and programming designed specifically around the Canadian market.

Importantly, KBC Expo is being developed in partnership with the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) and supported by its Canadian chapters, bringing together industry expertise, community leadership, and a stronger national foundation than ever before.

Over the last several months, Emerald and NKBA have worked closely with designers, brands, manufacturers, and industry partners across Canada to help shape the direction of the event and ensure the experience reflects the realities of working in this market.

“KBC Expo is being built around what we consistently heard from the Canadian industry – a desire for stronger community connection, more relevant education, and an experience designed specifically for how business gets done in Canada,” said Brian Pagel, Executive Vice President at Emerald. “Together with NKBA and its Canadian chapters, we have a unique opportunity to create something that feels highly relevant, highly valuable, and truly representative of the Canadian kitchen and bath community.”

As momentum builds toward KBC Expo 2026, the event is already attracting support from brands investing in the Canadian market and helping shape this next chapter for the industry. Early exhibitors include Artika, Daltile of Canada, Häfele Canada, Karran, Richelieu, Classic Brand Cabinetry, and Aline International.

The growing exhibitor roster reflects increasing confidence and support from across the industry as brands recognize the opportunity to connect with designers, architects, builders, and decision-makers from across Canada in a more focused and market-specific environment.

Attendees can expect an experience that combines inspiration, practical business value, and opportunities to build meaningful relationships across the industry, including:

  • Canadian-focused education and stage programming addressing the trends, business challenges, and opportunities shaping the market today.
  • Leading Canadian designers and industry voices sharing real project insights and practical perspectives.
  • Innovation Sprint sessions highlighting new products and ideas.
  • Networking happy hours across both event days, connecting manufacturers, showrooms, designers and architects.
  • NKBA Ontario-Canada Design Awards 2026, bringing together leaders and professionals from across the industry for a night of celebration.
  • Product discovery from brands actively serving and investing in the Canadian market.

Additional exhibitor announcements, speakers, partnerships, and programming details will continue to roll out as excitement builds toward November.

Registration opens June 1 at kbcexpo.com. NKBA members can register free through August 15, 2026.
