From understanding sensory sensitivities in individuals with autism to addressing the practical challenges faced by those with color blindness, this session will equip designers with strategies to make more informed and empathetic color choices.
We’ll also examine how color impacts safety, visibility, and comfort for clients who are aging in place, helping you create environments that promote independence and well-being over time. Through real-world examples and actionable guidance, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how color can enhance usability, reduce confusion, and improve overall quality of life.

Hi there, I’m Louis Thornton. I am a multi-disciplinary interior designer with specialties in color, custom lighting, kitchen & bath. I discovered my love for interior design when I first played The Sims. Then, I took classes for interior design in high school. This is where I got a small taste of the great journey I was going to take. Next, I went to Montgomery College. This is where I truly started to learn the craft of interior design. In time, I started to take classes in kitchen and bathroom design and first learned about NKBA. After many long days and almost sleepless nights, I became one of the top students in my college and won an award for Outstanding Achievement in Interior Design. At this point, I started my career by earning an internship at a kitchen & bath remodel firm & showroom during the Covid madness.
Soon after my internship ended, I was able to get my Associate’s degree. During this time, I joined ASID and helped pass out design awards for my local chapter. Next, I started to work in the design field, starting as a designer for Pottery Barn. This was another opportunity to show my design skills and make clients and customers happy. Even when lifting the covid lockdowns, getting goods and services was so much harder, but I didn’t give up.
My love for design didn’t stop, so I started to take many different courses online, learning more design skills. Some of which are hard to find in the design world. I always loved color, so I dove right into an advanced color & application and earned my CACC (Certified Architectural Color Consultant). Then I joined the ALA to fulfill my love for lighting and earned my LA (Lighting Associate) title. Later, I became a designer at Crate & Barrel. At this time, I am persistently increasing and adding to my knowledge of lighting, color, and kitchen & bath design to new levels and bringing my skills to my jobs.
