Tell Me a Story

Alison Kenworthy, founder of home-design showcase Homeworthy, imparted important advice at NKBA’s Women 2 Women conference, including the value of sharing a great story.

By Dianne M. Pogoda

“My 20-year career has not been a ladder, but a scavenger hunt. But every unexpected turn has led me to this place,” said Alison Kenworthy, founder of Homeworthy, as she delivered the keynote address at NKBA’s 4th annual Women 2 Women conference in Phoenix, Sept. 3 to 5, sponsored by Café Appliances, Ferguson Home, and Maxim Lighting.

The three-time Emmy Award-winning television producer shared her journey and offered some critical advice to 100 NKBA members, all women from various disciplines within the kitchen and bath industry, including design, manufacturing, marketing, and sales. One of the keys, she said, was asking for help along the way.

She began by sharing her own origin story. Homeworthy is a design video production company that shares tours of  homes and apartments around the world on YouTube. The company, founded in 2019, shows how homes and design shape the lives and tell the stories of those who live there.

Homeworthy today boasts over 50 million followers and logged over 1.2 billion minutes viewed last year. Kenworthy started her career as a TV journalist doing traffic reports. After growing up in the historic Georgetown neighborhood of Washington DC, where she discovered a love for the beautiful design and character of homes, she moved to New York for a job as a news desk assistant, and eventually a producer for ABC’s Good Morning America. During her time in New York, she lived in an apartment so tiny she dubbed it “The Dollhouse.” However, it taught her about the beauty of small spaces and that good design isn’t exclusively about grand mansions. “Often it’s the small spaces that resonate most with our audience — especially the ones that tell a story,” she said. This would become one of the cornerstones of her future brand.

From each of her work experiences, she said she learned invaluable lessons: how to work quickly; the art of compelling storytelling; time management; and how to capture people’s attention within the first few seconds.

Time for a Change

The news business was fulfilling but quite demanding, and Kenworthy said it was time to take a leap of faith. “I knew if I didn’t leave GMA, I would never take the risk needed to pursue my passion,” she said. “So, I started this project, and I was an accidental entrepreneur. Sometimes not knowing everything involved in launching a business is beneficial; when you’re in the middle of it, you just have to figure it out.”

Her first year, she was a one-woman show, handling everything from booking subjects for her home-showcase videos — all shot on her cell phone — to producing and posting the content. “In the beginning, I had to ask for help, ask friends for favors and connections. I liked creating episodes from beginning to end, learned how to solve problems and get things done, and in the process, I honed my skills. And because of this, I knew every aspect of the company, so I knew what to look for in the people I needed to hire to grow the business.”

She posted her first video, and on its first day, it drew just 14 views — a far cry from what she was accustomed to, considering GMA had 6 million daily viewers. But as she continued posting, her videos began to resonate with an audience. “Then the pandemic happened, and people were eager to see how others lived, to see inside their homes and hear their stories,” she revealed. “Going into people’s homes is not just about what the place looks like, it’s about the stories of the people who live there. It’s not just ‘before’ and ‘after,’ it’s about the middle and how they got there.”

The Growth Spurt

Kenworthy seized every opportunity to ask to go into people’s homes. An interview with the designer Bunny Williams was her first video to reach one million views. A chance meeting with Amy Schumer in a Manhattan boutique led to a piece on the comedian’s New Orleans home and taught another lesson: “When an opportunity presents itself, go for it!”

Homeworthy now has a team of 10 producers and collaborates with over a hundred videographers worldwide. The company produces a massive amount of content — three episodes a day — and averages about 7 million minutes watched monthly and over 1 billion impressions annually across multiple platforms. Her core audience is 79 percent female, with 60 percent of viewers between 25 and 54 years old. This key demographic has an affinity for luxury brands and experiences, which helps her with branding partnerships.

Top Takeaways

Kenworthy said the key to managing any kind of business comes down to hiring a great team. “This is pivotal. My first hire was someone who could do my job, to free me up to figure out how to grow the brand. It’s not easy to give up creative control, but that’s how we grew.

“I’ve never been afraid of people who are smarter than me,” she mused. “Hire people who have qualities you don’t have, and who may outperform you in certain areas. You have to trust them completely and empower them — don’t micromanage. The key is delegating and finding the right people to delegate to.”

Kenworthy advised the audience to “remember the power of your own story and narrative. You’ll unlock your most powerful tool for inspiring others.”

New Report From NKBA | KBIS and CEDIA Reveals State of Smart Home Integration in Home Design, Including Driving Forces and In-Demand Features

Joint “Technology Integration in Kitchen, Bath, or Whole Home Report” quantifies market opportunity for designers and integrators as demand for smart integration rises among consumers

BETHLEHEM, Pa., September 4, 2025 – The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA | KBIS), the world’s leading trade association for the kitchen and bath industry, and CEDIA, the Association for Smart Home Professionals™, have partnered to commission a U.S.-based research study examining the current state of technology integration* in home design. Comprised of data generated from a survey completed by industry experts including kitchen, bath and interior designers and specifiers, general contractors and remodelers, home technology integrators, home builders, and more, the report provides a comprehensive look into the smart home integration market.

As interest in home technology has increased over the past two years, the report found that homeowners completing projects with smart technology allocated on average approximately 20% of the overall budget towards smart home integration – over $41k for the average whole home project**. With an evolving industry landscape and breadth of products available, homes of the future will require collaboration between designers, integrators, architects, and builders as homeowners advocate for smarter, more intuitive home systems.

On September 3, NKBA | KBIS global president & CEO Bill Darcy, sat down for a Town Hall conversation at CEDIA in Denver, CO, with Daryl Friedman, global president & CEO of CEDIA, to discuss the findings.

“Smart home integration can be a substantial investment—whether for new homeowners or those upgrading their current space—and when done thoughtfully, it delivers an elevated, safer, and more seamless at-home experience,” said Darcy. “People aren’t looking for gimmicks. They want practical solutions that make everyday living easier, more efficient, and more connected.”

“Empowering design professionals and technology integrators to work closely pushes our entire industry ahead,” added Friedman. “Proper collaboration unlocks unique and innovative solutions tailored to every project and is shifting to become the new standard in home design – especially in the kitchen and bath, where so much technology is centered.”

With the top trade associations forging the way for ongoing and deeper collaboration and facilitating partnerships between the two industries, their common goal is to increase awareness for the role of the integrator at the onset of smart home projects. According to 75% of respondents, homeowners are currently the driving force for smart home integration, illustrating a client-driven demand for increased partnership. Looking ahead, 61% of respondents indicated that integrated technology is a “must-have” feature of the future, echoing the need for collaboration to be a priority upfront. By delving into the details, this report aims to recognize the features currently working the hardest in smart homes today, while uncovering the integration challenges and product opportunities to better prepare for the smart homes of tomorrow.

The full report is available at NKBA.org and CEDIA.org with free access for NKBA members and CEDIA members. Key findings include:

U.S. – Canadian Lumber Duties: As part of the regularly scheduled review process by the U.S. Commerce Department, countervailing duties on Canadian lumber imports increased from 6.74% to 14.63%.

Canadian Interior Design: The Council for Interior Design Qualification (CIDQ) and the Interior Designers of Canada (IDC) announced the launch of a joint initiative, the Canadian Advocacy Collaborative, which will support the development and promotion of public policy that upholds professional standards.

The Hamburgler was put on hold as the NKBA Southern Ohio/Kentucky Chapter recently held its annual Day of Giving, partnering once again with Ronald McDonald House Charities in Cincinnati. This heartwarming event brought together members to serve families receiving medical care, particularly those with kids at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

A team of 10 dedicated members volunteered their time on July 10 at the Ronald McDonald House. The team arrived two hours before lunch service to prepare a comforting meal for the residents. Their culinary efforts included grilled turkey and cheese with pesto spread, grilled chicken with herb-seasoned tomatoes and avocado slices, and various vegetable sides like potatoes with butter, tomatoes, and parmesan cheese, and roasted broccoli and carrots. They also assembled fresh salads and fruited yogurt cups.

Following the successful meal preparation and service, the volunteers diligently cleaned the kitchen and dining room, and even boxed up leftovers for a grab-and-go area. In total, the chapter served an impressive 186 meals to the families.

Shayna Hall, the chapter’s Programming Chair, emphasized the significance of this ongoing initiative. “Our local NKBA chapter is proud to partner again with the Ronald McDonald House in Cincinnati, creating meaningful opportunities for our members to give back to the community together,” Hall stated. “This initiative unites industry professionals, even competitors, around a greater purpose: serving families in need. Through shared service, we strengthen our local bonds and experience the deeply rewarding impact of making a difference beyond our day-to-day work. This is one of our favorite ongoing initiatives and something our board feels very strongly about!”

Don’t Count Boomers Out Yet: Millennial home buyers have made quite a splash in recent years, and in 2025, are making up 29 percent of home buyers. This group, ages 26 to 44, previously led all home purchasing. But this year, Baby Boomers, ages 60 to 78, reclaimed the top spot, accounting for about 42 percent of buyers, according to the 2025 Home Buyers and Sellers Generational Trends Report issued by the National Association of Realtors. Boomers, who are in or entering their retirement years, tend to downsize or move closer to friends and family. They also make up the largest share of sellers at 53 percent. NKBA | KBIS Celebrates Senior Citizens Day

Senior safety and accessibility design takes center stage in August.

By Nicholas Tamarin

World Senior Citizens Day on Thursday, August 25, is a time to honor the contributions of older adults—and to recognize the importance of creating home environments that allow them to live safely, comfortably, and independently. In the kitchen and bath, thoughtful design choices can make a world of difference for seniors.

Senior-friendly design is about blending form and function in ways that empower independence. NKBA | KBIS member brands are leading the way with innovative products that combine safety, accessibility, and style—proving that functional spaces can still be beautiful.

This Senior Citizens Day, let’s celebrate not just the lives of older adults, but also the environments that help them thrive. Here’s how NKBA members are helping to shape safe, accessible homes for today’s aging population:

1. Accessible Kitchen Layouts

Designing kitchens with seniors in mind means prioritizing ease of movement, ergonomics, and reduced strain. Wellborn Cabinet offers pull-out shelves, soft-close drawers, and adjustable-height cabinetry that make storage accessible without bending or reaching. Paired with GE Appliances’s wall ovens and side-opening doors, meal prep becomes safer and more comfortable.

2. Slip-Resistant, Low-Maintenance Flooring

Falls are a top safety concern for seniors. Mohawk Flooring and Shaw Floors offer slip-resistant surfaces that provide both traction and cushioning, reducing the risk of accidents while adding warmth and style to the space.

3. Easy-to-Use Faucets and Fixtures

For seniors with arthritis or limited dexterity, touchless or single-lever faucets can make a big difference. Delta Faucet and Moen lead with motion-activated kitchen and bath faucets that reduce effort while promoting hygiene.

4. Barrier-Free Showers & Walk-In Tubs

The bathroom is where many slips and falls occur. Kohler and American Standard offer low-threshold and barrier-free shower systems with built-in seating, textured flooring, and integrated grab bars. Jacuzzi walk-in tubs provide safe bathing with watertight doors and quick-drain systems.

5. Strategic Lighting for Safety

Good lighting isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s a safety essential. Häfele offers undercabinet and toe-kick lighting to improve visibility, especially at night, while Kichler Lighting delivers layered illumination that minimizes shadows and glare in high-use areas.

6. Comfort-Height Toilets & Adjustable Counters

Comfort-height toilets, available from brands like TOTO and Duravit, make sitting and standing easier for those with mobility limitations. Adjustable-height kitchen counters from Liebherr ensure work surfaces are accessible whether seated or standing.

7. Smart Home Integration for Peace of Mind

Voice-controlled appliances and lighting systems from Samsung, Bosch, and LG help seniors operate their homes with ease while enabling family members to monitor safety remotely.

NKBA Announces New, Dedicated Presence at High Point Market – Will Debut This Fall

The NKBA’s new design hub—adjacent to Cosentino’s newly established space, both in Broad Hall—features brand partners Kichler Lighting, James Martin Vanities, Ferguson Home, Sherwin-Williams, Fabuwood, BlueStar, Signature Hardware, Miele, Urban Bonfire, FreePower, and more.

BETHLEHEM, Pa., August 18, 2025 –The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA | KBIS), the world’s leading trade association for the kitchen and bath industry representing nearly 55,000 kitchen and bath industry professionals, will debut a new, dedicated presence at High Point Market. Located on the first floor of historic Broad Hall—and extending to a connected outdoor space—NKBA’s new design hub brings together prominent bath, appliance, lighting, and indoor/outdoor kitchen brands in full-scale vignettes. On the heels of announcing a strategic alliance partnership with High Point Market Authority, a physical presence at the show cements the partnership and NKBA’s role as an advocate and liaison for the kitchen and bath industry.

“The new NKBA space at High Point Market embodies the evolution of kitchen and bath into whole-home design,” said Bill Darcy, global president & CEO of NKBA | KBIS. “It’s a dynamic destination for discovering the latest trends—across furnishings, surfaces, appliances, and more—and understanding how the convergence of these elements is shaping a more connected and powerful design industry. As part of our strategic partnership with the High Point Market Authority, we’re proud to bring this broader story to life in a space as fittingly named as Broad Hall.”

The opportunity for a long-term presence at High Point Market was first presented to NKBA by Cosentino, which secured a multi-year investment in Broad Hall. In tandem with the launch of NKBA’s space, Cosentino will debut its own dedicated showroom experience in Broad Hall, with the goal to expand its reach to the design community at High Point and showcase the diversity of its products beyond countertops.

As Market attendees explore the space, participating brand partners including Kichler Lighting, James Martin Vanities, Ferguson Home, Sherwin-Williams, Fabuwood, BlueStar, Signature Hardware, Miele,  FreePower, and more, will showcase their best-in-class products to inspire designs for the whole home. The NKBA footprint also expands outdoors, where a Dekton floor is adorned with Feeney railings, an Azenco pergola, and an Urban Bonfire outdoor kitchen, which will be used to host panels and programming throughout Market.

All brand spaces were designed by Kerrie Kelly, NKBA board member and CEO & creative director of Kerrie Kelly Studio, who created an immersive experience that celebrates the intersection of luxury kitchen and bath design with craftsmanship and innovation. “Designing Broad Hall was an opportunity to honor High Point’s rich history while reflecting NKBA’s forward-looking commitment to whole-home innovation,” said Kelly. “Through layered materials, curated brand collaborations and immersive storytelling, the space invites designers to explore what’s next in luxury design — beyond the kitchen and bath.”

NKBA also worked in partnership with Broad Hall owner Codarus, which provided additional inspiration and guidance in the development of this collaborative space.

From October 25 – 28, between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily, and October 29, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., NKBA and the brand partners will present a variety of curated programming and events, including a ribbon-cutting celebration, designer panels, and other exciting activations.

NKBA | KBIS Specialty Badges: A Package of Prestige

Six NKBA members have earned all nine Specialty Badges, enhancing their industry knowledge and business reputations.

By Dianne M. Pogoda

Show what you know!

Communication is a powerful tool kitchen and bath professionals can use to build their businesses, increase clientele, and enhance their careers. NKBA Specialty Badges are an ideal way for industry pros to showcase their knowledge, expertise, and professional execution in various K&B-related disciplines. The program, which launched with five specialties at KBIS 2019, has grown to become a leading industry medallion and testament to expertise in nine specific areas.

While NKBA certification has long been recognized across the K&B world as a standard of design excellence, it is available exclusively to the designer community. Designers earn their Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer (CKBD) credential and may level up to Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designer (CMKBD).

Purchase Your NKBA Specialty Badges Here >

The badges were developed by NKBA and subject matter experts as a micro-credentialing program for all categories of membership — designers as well as remodelers, retailers, distributors, manufacturers, sales and marketing professionals, consultants and any other industry-related pro. The badges provide personalized learning and allow NKBA members to gain specific knowledge of a particular trade or skill.

Currently, the nine NKBA Specialty Badges include Floor Plans & Specifications, Lighting, Cabinetry, Sales & Marketing, Sustainability, Remodeling, Universal Design, Color, and Appliances. The first Specialty Badge costs $199 with subsequent Badges available for $149 each. Badge packages include all study materials and testing, and NKBA periodically offers special promotions for additional member discounts. For more information about the badges, visit NKBA.org/badges.

Just six NKBA members have earned all nine Specialty Badges. They concur that preparing for the badges deepened their understanding and broadened their areas of expertise. Here, they discuss what inspired them on their journey and what the credentials have meant to their careers.

Derick Vaden
Vice President / Lead Designer
Company: CTS&I Inc., Roanoke, Virginia
NKBA Chapter: Virginia State Chapter

“While I hold a BS in design and a master’s in marketing, neither of those degrees were a path to gaining certification through the NKBA in the kitchen and bath field.  With over 20 years of experience in the residential luxury custom home sector, my greatest strength is knowledge. By obtaining all nine badges, I hope to broaden the depth of knowledge I have in the field and be able to offer the best solutions for my clients. Earning all the badges was a way to gain valuable knowledge in the industry and to gain some insight into areas that I may have not been very familiar with.”

Megan Kyper
Kitchen & Bath Designer
Company: The Home Depot, Johnstown, PA
NKBA Chapter: Pittsburgh Tri State

“Our industry changes constantly. I had heard of the NKBA back in college, but didn’t fully explore what they were about. Once I started at The Home Depot, one of my training courses mentioned the NKBA and the badge program, so I looked into it. It seemed like a great step in refreshing my mind on some industry topics. It’s great that you can do them on your own time and expand your knowledge for a fraction of the cost of college courses. And if you’re looking to take the CKBD exam but have been out of studying and coursework for a while, what better way to use the badge program than as a steppingstone?”

Danielle Schroeder
Sales & Marketing
Company: Chief Architect, Coeur d’Alene, ID
NKBA Chapter: Palouse Chapter

“The badges have allowed me to take my NKBA membership to the next level, enhanced my credibility and I can demonstrate my expertise to customers and colleagues. Knowledge and skills are not static but evolve over time. The Specialty Badge program has allowed me to stay curious, seek out new information and adapt to changes within the kitchen and bath industry. Additional education is essential for staying relevant. It ensures that I am up to date with the latest trends, technologies and best practices, enabling me to effectively meet the demands of my profession.”

Kendrick Williams, CKBD
Designer, Design Services
Company: American Woodmark Corp., Winchester, VA (corporate headquarters; remote from Tulsa, OK).
NKBA Chapter: Baltimore/Washington Chapter

“The badges represent recognition of effort and study to continue to grow and learn about what K&B designers do. I often refer to the study material to help explain a choice or design strategy, or to just refresh my own knowledge. I want to be considered a resource where others could come and learn about all the different options and facets of kitchen and bath design, and I really love how the NKBA sets its members up for success. I was surprised about how much fun I had learning and studying for the badges. Seeing the business of kitchen and bath design embedded in the study material was interesting and inspiring.”

Tyler Williams
Kitchen Designer
Company: The Home Depot, Provo, UT
NKBA Chapter: Mountain States

“I wanted to earn all the badges to expand my knowledge, to be more versatile, and to create more developed and thorough projects. The most important benefit is being able to sell a more complete project by having a clearer understanding of the individual components of a kitchen and how they coincide. This not only benefits me but also each of my clients. A kitchen is an intricate puzzle with several components, and even the smallest one can make a huge difference. It’s amazing what you can see when your eyes are opened to more considerations and the potential transformation.”

Stephen Horan
Manager
Company: Jonathan Arnold Inc., Oceanside, NY
NKBA Chapter: NY Metro

“It was a very satisfying experience and I’m glad I did it — it’s a personal quest. The easiest badge for me to earn was Floorplans & Specifications, because my background is in drafting.  The most difficult was Sales & Marketing, as I have no experience in this area and it was all very new to me but also very interesting. The Appliance Specialist badge has helped me to understand all the latest advances in appliances and their applications, in particular, induction cooktops and speed ovens. If you follow the process, study the NKBA Knowledge Base materials, and you are confident in your abilities, you will successfully complete the badge.”

Spotlight on Surfacing & Safety: What the Latest Verdict Means for the Industry

Within the surfacing industry, silicosis, an occupational disease that stems from consistent and continuous exposure to silica dust over a prolonged period of time (years), is a critical topic driving an industry-wide response. Silica-based products, such as quartz, granite, slate, sandstone, and other building materials, release silica dust when cut, ground, or polished. The uptick in conversation stems from the rise of silicosis court cases across California. However, in May, a jury in Torrance, CA ruled that silica-based countertops are safe and attributed silicosis to improper handling of the material within the workplace. This ruling is notable, as it reinforces that it is possible to safely work with silica-containing products when proper safety measures are implemented within the workplace.

Clear Standards for Fabricators

To ensure fabricators are enforcing safety measures in the workplace, the Natural Stone Institute (NSI) is leading an industry-wide effort to require fabrication shops to adhere to strict safety and health measures outlined by OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. These clear standards for fabricators protect employees from silica dust exposure. They include: proper employee training, wet working methods (not dry-cutting), local exhaust ventilation and extraction systems, air quality measurement and filtration systems, proper housekeeping, the use of personal protection equipment (including, as necessary, respirators), and medical surveillance programs.

NSI’s CEO Jim Hieb added, “When the new OSHA standard became enforceable with much lower exposure levels for silica, the NSI created a Silica & Slab Safety Certificate training program to help industry workers and business owners better understand the ‘how’ to determine their risks and best practices to keep workers safe. I urge all NKBA members to utilize fabricators who have completed the safety certificate and/or achieved the coveted NSI-accredited fabricator credential. You (the kitchen & bath community) play a vital role in advocating for employee safety.”

Manufacturer-Led Awareness, Education & Product Innovation

Additionally, stone manufacturers have robust programs in place to support education about the safe handling of surfacing products. For example, brands use proven practices such as labeling and warnings on the product, in promotional materials, and product safety data sheets with information on silica content, risks, and safety and health measures. They also offer good practice guides and dedicated programs for online learning, seminars, and websites for fabricators, focusing on health and safety, machinery maintenance, and creating a safe work environment.

Several surfacing manufacturers have also developed low and zero-silica collections. These introductions stem from years of research and development to create products that help fabricators control silica dust exposure at their workplaces. However, the proper PPE is still required with these products.

Legislation Paving the Way for Change

Specifically in California, stone manufacturers have also taken steps to support legislation aimed at implementing a certification program to ensure fabricators of stone products comply with health and safety regulations that protect workers from exposure to silica dust. In 2023, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors approved the “Silicosis Prevention Education” motion, which invested $500,000 in intervention outreach and education through the nonprofits Pacoima Beautiful and the Institute of Popular Education of Southern California (IDEPSCA). In 2024, stone manufacturers collaborated with California public health and occupational safety officials on a permanent standard through Cal/OSHA that improves worker safety education, training, and awareness and facilitates the enforcement of OSHA regulations.

Another significant milestone in December 2024 was the introduction of legislative bill SB-20 by Senator Caroline Menjivar, which takes a proactive, solutions-oriented approach by requiring mandatory wet fabrication, required certification, and training, and a structured regulatory and enforcement framework. SB-20 could help ensure that slabs are only supplied to certified fabrication shops, closing a loophole that has allowed unregulated and unsafe operations to persist. This is a vital step in holding all players—from designers and suppliers to shop owners—to the same high standards. As of June 2025, SB-20 has passed the Senate and has now been received in the CA Assembly, where it currently awaits committee assignment and review.
