Ellen Cheever Award Winners Announced

NKBA | KBIS is proud to reveal the recipients for the prestigious honor recognizing promising kitchen and bath professionals who are current student members.

By Nicholas Tamarin

The Ellen Cheever Award provides essential NKBA | KBIS resources and the chance to earn a Specialty Badge credential at no cost. The comprehensive award package includes a one-year Knowledge Base subscription, a spiral-bound copy of the Kitchen & Bathroom Planning Guidelines (4th Edition) with complimentary shipping within the US and Canada, and free access to earn one NKBA Specialty Badge credential.

The award honors the legacy of Ellen Cheever, CMKBD, ASID, CAPS, CLIPP, a highly influential figure in the kitchen and bath industry for nearly 50 years. A dedicated NKBA member, she was celebrated as a designer, author, educator, and researcher. The award ensures that students can access the same valuable resources that Cheever championed throughout her illustrious career.

To be eligible for the award, applicants must be NKBA student members with at least one semester remaining until graduation. The application process includes an online form, an essay, and a series of required questions. Award winners may also be featured in NKBA marketing materials, providing additional recognition and exposure.

The Ellen Cheever Award is particularly beneficial as it provides resources often required for coursework in kitchen and bath programs, helping students enhance their education and professional development free of charge. Recipients also gain the opportunity to earn an NKBA Specialty Badge, significantly boosting their credentials and career prospects.

Meet the 2025 Ellen Cheever Award Winners:

Haley Hanlon, Pinellas Technical College-Clearwater

Haley Hanlon, a student at Pinellas Technical College-Clearwater, has always been drawn to the potential of homes to reflect personal style, with a particular passion for interior design elements, materials, and spatial transformation. She is fascinated by the interplay of color, texture, and functionality in kitchens and bathrooms and is eager to create spaces that people cherish.

Hanlon plans to pursue NKBA certifications, including the Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer (CKBD) and specialty badges in cabinetry, lighting, and appliances, with a specific interest in the Appliance Specialist badge. Her academic achievements include CAD designs for bedrooms and family rooms, and she is currently working on a public space design using SketchUp. She has hands-on experience in the industry, including ordering materials and managing logistics at Adalay Interiors, a Tampa-based design firm specializing in kitchen and bath remodels. She also contributed to a significant renovation project of 100 apartment units in her family’s business, gaining extensive experience with countertops, flooring, tiles, paint, cabinetry, and appliances.

Ellen Stephenson, Virginia Tech

Ellen Stephenson from Virginia Tech has been intrigued by home design since childhood, inspired by her family’s frequent moves and the diverse decor of her extended family and friends’ homes. She is particularly captivated by the harmonious coexistence of functionality and beauty in kitchens and bathrooms, recognizing them as central to daily life. She is passionate about designing spaces that evoke both comfort and inspiration.

Stephenson is committed to pursuing NKBA certifications and digital badges to become a well-rounded and competitive professional, emphasizing her understanding and application of NKBA standards. She has excelled in her Residential Design and Real Estate coursework, especially in construction materials and design software classes, where she has created detailed space plans. Beyond academics, Stephenson is an active member of her university’s Home Design Student Organization, volunteers with Habitat for Humanity, and is interning with Reico Kitchen and Bath to gain hands-on industry experience. She expressed deep gratitude for the award, noting its significance in covering costs for materials and certification fees, as well as boosting her confidence in her design career aspirations.

Lisa Taylor, Collin College Technical Campus

Lisa Taylor of Collin College Technical Campus discovered her passion for combining aesthetics, utility, and innovation to improve everyday lives through kitchen and bath design. Recognizing these areas as the heart of a home, she aims to create spaces where people can make memories and connect.

Taylor began pursuing an A.A.S. in Interior Design at the age of 55, maintaining a 3.8 GPA. Through coursework and projects, she has developed a strong interest in ergonomics, materials, and lighting, and how these elements integrate to meet client needs and style. She is particularly drawn to the blend of technical precision and creative expression required in the kitchen and bath industry, and is interested in sustainable design, Aging in Place, and neuroinclusive Design. Taylor has been an active member of her campus’s student interior design chapters, serving on a committee that organized two student events, including a panel of industry experts as guest speakers.

NKBA | KBIS Celebrates the 2025 House Beautiful Next Wave Class at Iconic Hearst Tower

By Crystal Watts

Last week, NKBA | KBIS had the privilege of hosting an exclusive breakfast event at the iconic Hearst Tower in New York City to celebrate the 2025 class of House Beautiful Next Wave Designers. Held inside one of Manhattan’s most striking architectural landmarks, the event brought together a dynamic group of rising stars in residential design.

Heather Shannon, Senior Vice President of Marketing & Communications at NKBA | KBIS opened the morning with a warm welcome and heartfelt congratulations to the new class. She shared the value of NKBA’s community, its commitment to professional growth, and played a lively video recapping the energy and inspiration of KBIS 2025.

Following the introduction, House Beautiful Executive Content Editor Jess Teves led a thoughtful conversation with two special guests: Jerel Lake, owner of Lake Haus Designs, a previous Next Wave honoree and 2024 NKBA Design Competition Winner, and celebrated interior designer Thom Filicia, principal of Thom Filicia Inc. and member of the NKBA Design Council.

Lake shared how his decision to focus more intentionally on kitchen and bath design has helped him build a more profitable and technically informed business. By honing his skills in these high-value areas, he found new ways to grow revenue and expand client opportunities—an insight that resonated with the rising designers in the room.

Filicia reflected on how industry events like KBIS serve as a valuable tool for all design professionals—offering both inspiration and opportunities to build meaningful relationships with brands and peers. Beyond the educational value, he emphasized how meaningful it is to connect directly with the brands—and the people behind them. For Filicia, building relationships at shows like KBIS goes beyond product knowledge; it’s about developing connections that energize creativity and business alike.

This message ties in closely with the recent House Beautiful feature on the power of working with dedicated kitchen and bath professionals—an important read for designers looking to grow both expertise and impact. Explore the article here.

As part of the celebration, NKBA | KBIS proudly acknowledged the full 2025 House Beautiful Next Wave class—a talented group poised to shape the future of residential design:

The Evolving Home: Multi-Generational Living and Flexible Spaces for Modern Life

The concept of “home” has undergone a huge transformation, starting in the 1970s but accelerated more recently with today’s technology and our changing needs after the pandemic. This an exciting time for the design industry. The Evolving Home: Multi-Generational Living and Flexible Spaces for Modern Life seminar will explore these significant changes and their impact on kitchen and bath design.

For example, people are still working at home, part of the time or full-time. Families also fell in love with the comfort of staying at home for activities that used to mean an outing, like getting spa treatments or eating an exceptional meal. Major shifts in bath and kitchen design have come out as a result, and manufacturers have risen to the occasion, too. With more specific kitchen appliances than ever, and with more accessible spa-grade materials and luxuries for the bathroom, this seminar delves into the “new home’s” new views on flexible and personalized spaces.

Multi-generational living is a new part of the picture, too. Families are increasingly opting for multi-generational homes, where grandparents, parents, and children share a living space. This trend presents unique design challenges and opportunities, requiring us to think creatively about privacy, accessibility, and shared spaces that cater to different age groups and lifestyles, especially in the kitchen and bathroom.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn strategies for creating flexible kitchen and bath spaces that can adapt to various functions and user needs.
  • Explore trends in personalized kitchen and bath design, focusing on customization and high-performance features.
  • Understand the principles of designing multi-generational kitchens and bathrooms that combine accessibility with elegance.

Clutter’s the Culprit: A recent survey revealed that one of the most important priorities in the kitchen is to reduce clutter — in drawers and cabinets as well as on countertops. Eagle Woodworking, a cabinetry maker based in Lawrence, MA, conducted the survey of 1,000 homeowners, with 74 percent saying they feel their kitchen is cluttered, impacting how often they cook or host, and 58 percent saying the clutter causes daily stress. To help remedy the situation, 82 percent said they’d opt for custom drawer inserts and 63 percent said they’d be likely to hire a contractor to integrate built-in storage features. Learn more about the survey here.

Sustainable Luxury Takes Center Stage at Fabuwood’s Micro-Conference in San Francisco

in San Francisco

Top design professionals enjoyed insightful discussions, trend reports, and a showcase of innovative materials.

By NKBA Staff

The intersection of high-end design and environmental responsibility was the focus of a recent Sustainable Luxury Micro-Conference, presented by Fabuwood and hosted by NKBA | KBIS at Cosentino City in San Francisco. The four-hour event on Thursday, May 29, brought together design professionals for insightful discussions, trend reports, and a showcase of innovative materials.

The afternoon commenced with a welcome address and a trend report from Angela Rath, Director of Brand Development at NKBA | KBIS, offering attendees a glimpse into the future of sustainable luxury design. This was followed by a “Spotlight Conversation” featuring Moses Brach, Head of A&D Partnerships at Fabuwood, who shared valuable insights on current innovations driving the movement. Brach shared, “This is where Fabuwood shines—we’re at the forefront of technological innovation, digitally tracking every component of cabinetry, ensuring there’s never any waste. We also have an entire department dedicated to wood recovery, recycling, and reuse.”

A central highlight of the micro-conference was the panel discussion, “Elevated, Responsible, Beautiful: Designing for a Greener Future.” Moderated by Kelly Buchsbaum, Director of Chapters & Learning at NKBA | KBIS, the panel featured experts Nureed Saeed, Owner/Creative Director of Nu Interiors, and Kathryn Soter, Executive Director of Good Future Design Alliance (GFDA), who explored strategies for incorporating sustainability without compromising aesthetic appeal.

Saeed inspired the designer audience with her signature strategy on beginning every new client meeting with her commitment to reuse furnishings and materials. An award-winning interior designer, Saeed is also NKBA Northern California Chapter President. Soter explained how GFDA prioritizes low-waste design practices to reduce construction waste and aims to educate designers, architects, and builders as well as encourage recycling as a line-item on every bid.

Carolyn Flannery joined Saeed and Soter on the panel and shared the latest news from her charitable organization Make It Home, which she founded in 2020 after working as an interior designer in the Bay Area for 25 years. She saw a lot of waste, such as clients replacing perfectly good furniture, and at the same time she volunteered with foster kids who often had nowhere to go after aging out of the system. She created Make It Home so that the problem of furniture waste could solve the problem of furniture poverty.

Following a brief break, the conference continued with a panel, “The Conscious Luxury Conversation.” Moderated by Alisa Carroll, West Coast Contributing Editor for Veranda—along with luminary designers Kerrie Kelly, Kerrie Kelly Design Lab CEO/Creative Director and NKBA Board of Directors Vice Chair; and Elma Gardner, CMKBD, By Design Owner and Principal Designer—the panel delved into the evolving expectations of discerning clients who prioritize both elegant interiors and environmental consciousness.

Attendees also had the opportunity to engage directly with cutting-edge, planet-friendly products during a “Materials & Innovation Showcase Walkthrough” with Fabuwood. The event concluded with a networking session, complemented by light bites and refreshments, allowing participants to connect with design industry peers, brand representatives, and fellow NKBA members.

The Fabuwood Sustainable Luxury Micro-Conference served as a significant platform for exploring the growing demand for environmentally sound practices within the luxury design sector, providing valuable knowledge and fostering connections among industry leaders committed to a greener future.

Affordability Concerns Temper K&B Growth Nationally, Especially in the West and Northeast

Texas Bucks Trend with Continued Expectation of Double-digit Growth in 2025

By NKBA Editorial Staff

The first quarter of 2025 was dominated by heightened consumer caution tied to federal policy shifts, especially the impact new tariff rates could have on pricing. K&B professionals in the West and Northeast interviewed for the Q1 2025 Kitchen & Bath Market Index Survey were among those expressing the biggest impact of this dynamic on their businesses.

While K&B industry sales flattened in Q1 2025 across the country, slower sales were most concentrated in the West, where the YOY change in kitchen and bath sales averaged across all K&B firms ranged from -1% in California to -3% in the Southwestern U.S. and -5% in the Northwest region.

Some other notable regional insights from the NKBA / John Burns Q1 2025 Kitchen & Bath Market Index (KBMI) report:

Market Weakness in the West, Northeast

Kitchen and bath market weakness was most concentrated in the West, and to some extent, in the Northeast during the first quarter of the year. Many industry professionals in these areas noted that consumer enthusiasm and demand were cooling off because of worries related to tariffs.

Affordability remains a major strain on coastal markets. Some California households, rebuilding post-wildfires, are reportedly downgrading the scope of their reconstruction projects. Several Northeast firms also reported negative market impacts from federal job layoffs.

Outlook Cools Down in the Midwest

Strong demand drivers in the Midwest were hampered by increasing consumer caution. K&B firms in the region reported pockets of strength from boomers and older homes coming due for remodels. Backlogs in the Midwest were solid, but this was largely due to acute labor shortages limiting the pace of growth. Client leads reportedly came to a “screeching halt” in Q1 2025 following major tariff announcements in April. Firms’ average expectation for 2025 revenue growth in the area cooled significantly from 6% to 2% QOQ.

Slowed Momentum in the Southeast

While Southeast spending was on an upswing in early 2025, this progress seems to have stalled. K&B industry optimism slowed in late Q1 2025. Backlogs declined QOQ and firms reported slower revenue growth expectations of 3% YOY on average in 2025, down from 5% in Q4 2024. One bright spot is that affluent luxury clients in Florida remain as resilient as ever, although declining home prices there have tempered broader demand. Some industry pros hope this could lead to increased fix-and-flip-related renovation activity.

A Brighter Picture in Texas

Many of the surveyed Texas K&B building and construction firms still expect robust growth this year. As of Q1 2025, Texas pros expected revenue growth of 10% YOY on average, unchanged from the prior quarter. This overperformance was, in large part, driven by renovations undertaken by affluent older consumers, along with consumers priced out of buying new homes. Still, a number of firms said tariff-related impacts, including rising prices, are tempering optimism and inhibiting greater growth potential.

“Although the numbers varied from region to region, it’s clear that the uncertainty around tariffs and prices has many consumers across the country still stuck in wait-and-see mode,” said NKBA I KBIS Global President & CEO Bill Darcy. “As the picture on tariffs and their impact comes into better focus, consumers will have better information so that they, in partnership with their professional K&B design partners, can budget their projects accordingly.”

For additional insights into what K&B industry pros across the nation are saying about the state of the industry and what lies ahead, download the NKBA / John Burns Q1 2025 Kitchen & Bath Market Index (KBMI) report here.

Annual Excellence in Education Awards Announced

North American design programs were once again honored by NKBA | KBIS.

By Nicholas Tamarin

NKBA | KBIS is proud to announce the recipients of the Excellence in Education Award for 2025, recognizing outstanding institutions that have demonstrated exceptional student achievement in the 2023-2024 Student Design Competition (SDC) sponsored by Fisher & Paykel. This prestigious award celebrates schools with a strong commitment to design education and builds upon the success of previous years.

The Excellence in Education Award is granted based on SDC submissions scoring 80 points or better, with a requirement of a minimum of three entries from three separate students. Out of hundreds of annual submissions to the SDC, participants from seven institutions distinguished themselves this year. These winners will be honored with a personalized letter, a certificate, and a digital logo for promotional use.

Award Recipients:

Lakeland College, Vermillion, Alberta: Program Head Rochelle Horne, CKBD, received an honorable mention for NKBA Educator of the Year 2024, and two Lakeland College students placed in the 2023-2024 SDC. “Lakeland College has maintained a longstanding and meaningful relationship with the NKBA,” Horne says. “This reflects the commitment and excellence of our students, fostered within our close-knit studio environment.”

Century College, White Bear Lake, Minnesota: Kerry Lombard, a student from Century College, won first place in the kitchen category of the SDC. The Kitchen and Bath Design Program at Century College integrates the NKBA Student Design Competition into the final project of the Advanced Kitchen and Bath Design class, and students have participated for over 20 years. “Our Kitchen and Bath Design Program is set up so our classes build upon skills learned in previous classes” Kitchen and Bath Design Program Director Margaret Krohn, CKBD says.  “When students get to our Advanced Kitchen and Bath Design course, they are prepared to work on the comprehensive Student Design Competition as part of the Final Project in our Advanced Kitchen and Bath Design class. Our KBD students have worked on the NKBA Student Design competition for over 20 years and it is their choice if they would like to submit their project. Our KBD students work more independently on this project, and I have a basic timeline to help keep them track for time management. This is what they will be doing out in the field, so we help prepare our KBD Students in all of our classes prior to working on the Student Design Competition.”

Cañada College, Redwood City, California: Cañada College’s Interior Design program, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025, evolved from Home Economics courses in 1973 to a premier community college program under Dr. Genevieve Cory. The program has trained numerous successful interior designers for over 50 years, providing pathways to careers and further education.

Bow Valley College, Calgary, Alberta: The largest community college in Alberta, Bow Valley College—situated in downtown Calgary, a short drive from the Rocky Mountains—is a longtime member of NKBA’s Affiliated Schools Program. The NKBA Student Design Competition serves as the course evaluation for the Kitchen and Bath Design Program’s capstone course since the program began in 2017.

Georgian College, Ontario: Spread across seven campuses, Georgian College students consistently win national and provincial kitchen and bath awards. Georgian has the highest graduate employment rate among all colleges in Ontario. The college is an NKBA-affiliated school with NKBA-based courses, preparing students to master the NKBA Kitchen and Bath Planning Guidelines and prepare for NKBA Certification.

Saddleback College, Mission Viejo, California: Cassandra Jerrems, a student from Saddleback College, took home second place for her kitchen design. Saddleback College integrates the NKBA Student Design Competition into two courses: Kitchen Design and Bath Design. Interior Design Department Chair Farida Gabdrakhmanova says, These classes are typically offered in alternating semesters (and not always every academic year). In both, the NKBA contest project—either kitchen or bath—is used as the student’s final semester project. We introduce NKBA planning guidelines and the design process application early in the semester, and students apply them in another project before starting on the contest. This helps them become familiar with expectations. The projects (including the NKBA competition) are divided into phases—Programming, Schematic Design, and Design Development I & II— with feedback provided at each stage to support student progress and ensure alignment with NKBA standards.”

University of Georgia, Athens: Part of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, the Furnishings and Interiors program is focused on residential design and is structured to provide students with the skills needed to work in a professional design firm. The UGA NKBA Student Chapter organization meets six times a semester to learn more about the kitchen and bath industry. There are seven studio courses to enhance students’ skill sets and knowledge, and a dedicated computer lab is available for technical courses where students learn how to use AutoCAD, REVIT, Design 2020, and other programs. The 2025-2026 Student Design Competition will be announced later this summer, please check the competition webpage for more information.
