The Big Fridge: Key Player for Holiday Entertaining

Refrigerators have become larger and more efficient in recent years, to accommodate changes in lifestyle and design.

By NKBA Staff

It’s the start of the holiday feasting season, and in the kitchen, that usually means we need more refrigerator and freezer space. This means the big fridge plays a big role.

A recent New York Times article noted that refrigerators have grown almost every year since 1980, when the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers began tracking their size. The average size increased to 25.8 cubic feet in 2021 (the most recent data available), up from 19.6 cubic feet in 1980. Counter-depth models may have less space than standard-depth units, but they can make up for the depth with added width.

True’s 48-inch side-by-side with glass refrigerator door has 21.3 cubic feet of refrigerator space and 8.8 cubic feet of freezer space. Courtesy of True Residential.

“Refrigerators are getting bigger — and especially wider — because modern kitchens now value design integration and lifestyle flexibility as much as utility,” said Andrew Shead, Sales & Marketing Manager at True Caliber. “The counter-depth trend has been a major driver. By making fridges shallower to sit flush with cabinetry, manufacturers compensate with extra width to preserve interior space. This creates a seamless, built-in aesthetic while accommodating today’s storage needs for bulk shopping, meal prep, and entertaining.”

True Residential now offers 36-inch, 42-inch, and 48-inch units, all of which contain a capacity between 25.5 and 29.4 cubic feet. If space constraints are not a concern, the luxury brand offers the option to “expand” by seamlessly uniting any combination of columns with its state-of-the-art joining kits that can yield up to 120 inches of continuous refrigeration. In fact, True’s smallest refrigerator among its large-format models is a 36-inch-wide column that can accommodate a full-size commercial sheet pan (18 inches by 36 inches).

LG’s Standard-depth 38-inch-wide MAX 4-door French-door model has 29 cubic feet of storage. Courtesy of LG.

“For many consumers, larger capacity refrigeration is about lifestyle needs,” said Dean Brindle, Senior Director of Product Management for Home Solutions at LG. “Families need space to store more food, bulk shoppers stock up for convenience, and frequent entertainers want room for every occasion. Even consumers focused on fresh, healthy eating require additional storage for produce and perishables.”

The most popular refrigerator size is still 36-inches wide with a capacity exceeding 25 cubic feet, Brindle added. LG’s Counter-Depth MAX Zero Clearance unit has a capacity of 23.7 cubic feet, while its standard depth MAX four-door French-door refrigerator has 29 cubic feet of space. SKS, the luxury brand under the LG umbrella, offers a 48-inch-wide, built-in French-door model with 26 cubic feet of interior space.

The most recent push toward larger refrigeration likely started during the pandemic, when consumers became more aware of healthier, plant-based eating and buying in bulk to minimize trips to the grocery store. The growth in delivered ready-to-cook meal kits, a $10.4 billion market in 2023, also requires refrigerator space, and that’s expected to grow at an annual rate of 11 percent through 2030, according to Grandview Research. Additionally, the sophisticated food preservation systems that are now available in many high-end refrigerators keep food fresher for a longer period — so if homeowners keep food longer, they’ll need more space to store it.

NKBA’s 2026 Kitchen Design Trends Report revealed that there is increasing demand for refrigerators that offer flexibility, space, and features to accommodate lifestyles, with 72 percent of survey respondents noting that homeowners want larger fridges to support healthy eating habits.

Additionally, 76 percent said kitchens are having a greater influence on the décor and tone of the rest of the house, and 75 percent of respondents said kitchens are getting larger, often usurping square footage from adjacent rooms. With larger kitchens comes space for larger appliances, which can include wide models up to 60 inches wide, and separate columns for refrigerators, freezers, and wine columns. Walk-in or butler’s pantries also provide space for additional refrigeration, in full-size models, under-counter styles, or drawers.

Refrigerators and freezers with generous capacity and wide shelving accommodate large, ready-to-serve platters, making it easy to transition from fridge to table.

Miele’s MasterCool Refrigerator. Image courtesy of Miele.

“Miele’s refrigerator drawer capacity allows enough room for prepped trays of food ready to cook,” said Vicki Robb, National Center Program Coordinator for Miele. “Humidity and temperature-controlled drawers keep vegetables fresh and crisp, allowing you to shop days in advance.”

Miele also introduced freezers with ice makers that produce craft ice at a rate of up to 150 cubes per day, ensuring the bar stays stocked. The company recently launched an updated model of its under-counter wine refrigerator with temperature, humidity, and lighting control that’s panel-ready and designed to blend in with cabinetry.

Miele is fully aligned with the market trend toward larger refrigerators, and units that blend seamlessly with the overall décor of the living space. In its new MasterCool generation, Miele has introduced a new niche size, 42 inches, as well as its 36-inch unit, both with compatible furniture fronts.

The energy efficiency of today’s refrigerators also makes them less expensive to operate, consuming over 70 percent less energy than models manufactured in the Seventies. Combined with thinner insulation, better door seals, and LED lighting, which gives off less heat, the compressors work more efficiently, leading to lower electricity bills and less food waste.

NKBA | KBIS Releases Annual 2026 Bath Trends Report

Rapidly evolving home technology stands to reshape the modern bath, as personal lifestyles drive design decisions

Bethlehem, PA – (November 11, 2025) — The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA | KBIS), the world’s leading trade association for the $228 billion kitchen and bath industry, representing nearly 55,000 North American kitchen and bath industry professionals, has released its 2026 Bath Trends Report. Comprised of data generated from a survey completed by nearly 700 industry experts, including designers, manufacturers, remodelers, architects, and more, the report provides a comprehensive look into current and upcoming trends in residential baths that will have the biggest impact in 2026 and beyond.

According to the report, the bath design landscape is currently in a state of flux – the evolution of bathroom technology marks an upcoming shift emerging in the home. As residential tech continues to present more opportunity and innovation, three areas of growth in the bath are standing out:

  • Technology in Design Inspiration: Younger homeowners are turning to AI for design inspiration that integrates smart features, sustainability, and style.
  • Technology in Fixtures: Smart home integration is expanding rapidly through intelligent showers, lighting, and energy systems.
  • Technology for Wellness: Health-oriented features, stress-reduction tools, and aging-in-place innovations are becoming mainstream.

Beyond technology, personalized tastes and lifestyles are continuing to be the driving force behind color, style, and materials selection, as well as storage configurations and bath layout. “Bath design is becoming deeply personal,” said Bill Darcy, Global President & CEO of NKBA | KBIS. “Beyond considerations like resale value, designers are focusing on how spaces support a homeowner’s individual rituals, preferences, and self-care routines. This perspective encourages creativity, niche trends, and designs that truly reflect how people live today.”

The full report is available at NKBA.org with free access for NKBA members. Key findings include:

Colors & Materials: What’s In, What’s Out

  • Light Neutrals Win: In near total agreement, 96% of respondents identified neutrals as the most popular bath colors, with off-white (58%), light brown/tan (54%), and white (40%) earning the dominant response ahead of dark brown (30%), black (18%), and dark gray/slate (18%).
  • Shades of Green: Brown-based greens – sage (64%) and olive (43%) – are expected to be popular choices, while bolder hues – teal/turquoise (19%) and emerald/juniper (16%) – received far less attention.
  • Timeless Design: Transitional/timeless design tops the list, with 70% of respondents naming it as a popular style in the next three years. The style is followed by organic/natural (65%) and contemporary/modern/minimalism (57%) designs.
  • Removing Fine Lines: Homeowners are looking for smaller or no grout lines on the floor, according to 89% of those surveyed. Additionally, 91% agree that durability and practicality to minimize upkeep is the top consideration for choosing a flooring material, supporting 80% who believe large format flooring will be the most popular over the next three years.
  • Natural Materials: Wood-faced vanities (62%) have overtaken painted (53%) in popularity as biophilic design continues to be prioritized in the bath.
  • Polished Is Out: For faucets, matte (54%), brushed (51%), and satin (46%) were all more popular than a polished finish (39%), playing into organic, natural design cues.

A Growing Footprint

The overall bath footprint will increase to make room for wellness-centered spaces, universal design considerations, and efficient storage solutions, according to 72% of respondents. Meanwhile, the space allocation in the primary bath is a top priority according to 89% of respondents. More than half (55%) say a larger shower size is more important than having a bathtub, which allows for more spa-like features and amenities within the shower, including steam options, saunas, aromatherapy, chromotherapy, and integrated seating and shelving.

Hospitality Inspiration for Wellness

Tying bath design to a homeowner’s hotel or resort experience is expected to be a popular practice, according to 77% of respondents, supporting the unification of wellness, technology, and sustainability into a singular, cohesive design philosophy. This isn’t about one individual feature like a smart toilet (though 51% agree smart toilets will rise in popularity over the next three years) or a new tile color (patterned and textured tiles are gaining prominence, according to 66%). Instead, it’s a fundamental shift in how we perceive and use the primary bathroom. It’s moving from a purely utilitarian space to a sanctuary dedicated to physical and mental well-being, while also being smart and environmentally conscious.

Spreading the Light

Lighting quality is a top consideration when it comes to bath design, according to 91% of respondents. In practice, this means prioritizing layers and levels of lighting:

  • Task Lighting: 92% agree that task lighting should always be included in the primary bath
  • Mood Lighting: 51% predict mood lighting in shower will gain prominence
  • Time-of-Day Lighting: 80% are including nighttime-specific lighting, and 88% list natural lighting as a top priority
  • Aesthetic Lighting: 47% favor integrated lighting in mirrors over the next three years

Custom Bath Solutions

On a growing scale, smart technology is being integrated to achieve a more individualized daily ritual and as a tool to impact overall well-being. On a simpler level, custom storage solutions with configurable modules to simplify life are being thoughtfully integrated into bath vanity and cabinetry design. Item-specific storage includes built-in storage for hair tools, makeup, and medications, electrical integration, custom dividers and organizers to maximize drawer efficiency, and charging stations for electronic devices within vanity cabinetry. Coupled with personalized style inspiration, these considerations represent a deep shift towards bespoke living.

Accessibility is Elegant

Aging-in-place design elements have become so mainstream that in addition to function, these universal design fixtures prioritize beauty as well. Grab bars, curbless showers, shower benches, barrier-free shower entries, and wider doors are subtle, crucial safety features that make a primary bath look more luxurious and elevated. Of those surveyed, 32% agree that aging-in-place is now a mainstream trend; 48% agree that it’s on its way to becoming one.

I’m LaDonna Eriksen, the Founding Partner of the Construction Education Consortium, a company I co-founded in May of 2023. Our presentations under the name of Construction Education Consortium began in the same year, focusing on educating and sharing expertise within the construction industry.

For the past 38 years, I’ve worked as an interior designer, running my business, Interiors by Design. I’m a proud member of the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), a licensed general contractor, and a Certified Living in Place Professional. Over the years, I’ve honed my skills in both residential and commercial design, working on a variety of remodeling projects from the initial design concept to the final completion.

In addition to my design experience, I’ve been a licensed general contractor and project manager since 2012. For the past twelve years, a significant portion—over 85%—of my work has been centered around kitchen and bath design. This includes providing comprehensive design consultations, creating cabinetry layouts, producing shop drawings, drafting space plans for entire home designs, and overseeing production and installation.

I have a strong background in human anatomy, which has always influenced my approach to design. I believe that function and form must work hand in hand, and I make it a priority to ensure that every space I design is both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional. Above all, making homes accessible and safe has always been a top priority in my work, and I strive to incorporate these elements into every project.

I developed this framework through my own experience navigating leadership roles in related industries, and it’s designed to help professionals take intentional action at each stage. By understanding these Pivot Points, leaders can strategically support their teams through change, ensuring that each transition is an opportunity for growth rather than a disruption.

Learning Objectives:

  • Implement strategies to support team members and employees during these transitions to enhance retention and team performance.

Daltile: A Legacy of American Manufacturing and Innovation in the Tile Industry

Founded in Dallas in 1947, Dal-Tile LLC, and its powerhouse brand Daltile, has established itself as the largest tile manufacturer in the United States and a leader in the tile industry for over 78 years. With 9 U.S. manufacturing locations and over 15,000 employees, Dal-Tile prides itself on being a steadfast domestic provider, consistently offering quality and competitive prices for its locally produced tile collections, made exclusively in the USA.

Commitment to Domestic Manufacturing and Quality

Daltile’s commitment to domestic manufacturing provides a significant competitive edge, enabling the brand to meet industry demands for quick-turn expectations with superior reliability and availability. This domestic production also ensures the highest levels of quality and performance, with products adhering to stringent U.S. environmental and indoor air quality standards. Furthermore, local manufacturing allows Daltile to rapidly respond to market changes and emerging trends, accelerating the speed-to-market for new products. This robust domestic production system, built over 78 years, ensures Daltile has solutions for virtually any customer need.

Reputation and Innovation

Over the past seven decades, Daltile has cultivated a reputation for leadership in design, quality, innovation, and service. A key to its enduring success has been the company’s ability to innovate, grow, and adapt to industry changes, consistently focusing on providing the most innovative products on the market.

Focus on Kitchen and Bath Business

Daltile’s strong interest in the kitchen and bath business stems from tile’s inherent properties as the preeminent waterproof product for wet areas. The brand’s tile products are an ideal choice for bathrooms and kitchens due to their waterproof performance, bacterial resistance, low maintenance requirements, versatile design options, and cost-effectiveness. The surface of Daltile’s tile remains unchanged by liquids, water, or moisture.

Technological Advancements in Tile Production

The company’s evolution is deeply rooted in its use of leading-edge technology in tile production. Tile is no longer merely utilitarian; advancements in technology have transformed it into a true “design element.” Daltile operates as a fashion-based brand, leveraging technology to create virtually any design, color, size, shape, and texture imaginable by its designers. This design and technological prowess allows Daltile to remain at the forefront of the latest interior design trends.

Advanced Performance Features and Product Range

Beyond aesthetics, Daltile’s advanced technology enables “advanced performance features.” For example, some tile products eliminate 99% of surface bacteria 24 hours a day for the life of the tile. Daltile also offers tile with 50% greater slip resistance than traditional tile, enhancing safety and allowing for seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces. The company is also a premier producer of countertops and extra-large slabs, with many products among the largest porcelain, quartz, or stone slabs globally, offering customers superior quality, availability, and service. Notably, over 70 of Daltile’s tile collections are Made in the USA in company-owned production facilities, ensuring product quality, adherence to high environmental standards, and the ability to fulfill quick-turn orders.  Daltile’s domestically manufactured products include porcelain floor tile, ceramic floor tile, wall tile, mosaic tile, outdoor tile, quarry tile, and countertops.

Addressing the K&B Market and Homeowner Needs

Daltile is a significant player in the K&B market, offering solutions that align with the current desire for personalized home spaces where family and friends can gather. Recognizing that today’s homeowners spend more time at home and conduct extensive online research, Daltile aims to bring their home décor dreams to life. Whether it’s a new kitchen countertop as a family gathering place, a beautiful backsplash, a luxurious spa-like bathroom, or a patio that extends indoor living space, Daltile offers a comprehensive range. The brand serves as a one-stop shop, offering the industry’s widest and deepest selection of tile and countertop products to meet diverse design, color, size, shape, texture, and price requirements.

Community Involvement and Philanthropy

Daltile is a proud partner of the Gary Sinise Foundation’s R.I.S.E. (Restoring Independence, Supporting Empowerment) program, donating tile for mortgage-free, specially adapted smart homes for severely wounded service members and first responders. This partnership enables heroes to choose tile options for their homes from Daltile showrooms, contributing to their joy and overall well-being.

Addressing Skilled Labor Shortages

Addressing the industry-wide challenge of skilled labor shortages, particularly for tile installers, Daltile actively partners with trade associations to develop training and career programs that educate individuals on the benefits of pursuing a career as a tile installer.

Customer Shopping Journey and Satisfaction

Instead of viewing it as a challenge, Daltile considers “help during the entire shopping journey” as a significant consumer need. The company has invested heavily in online, in-store, and sampling tools to help customers select the perfect product for their needs and taste. From the initial online interaction to the in-store experience, Daltile’s shopping journey is designed with easy-to-use tools for inspiration, exploration, information, and design guidance, all focused on ensuring customer satisfaction for years to come.

One-Stop Shop

Ultimately, Daltile stands as a one-stop shop for builders, renovators, designers, and home owners, offering a comprehensive selection of porcelain, ceramic, glass, and natural stone tile as well as mosaics, extra-large slabs, countertops, and exterior products. This unrivaled breadth and depth of products empowers customers to bring their design visions to life, regardless of aesthetic, application, or budget, making Daltile a trusted resource in the K&B market.

Gaggenau Launches Vario Cooling Series: Premium appliance maker Gaggenau has unveiled its Vario Cooling Expressive series, including refrigerators, freezers, and wine cabinets in various sizes and capacities. The refrigerators feature dark brushed stainless-steel interiors with adjustable anodized aluminum and glass shelving. They offer touch-to-open, handle-free doors, interior air purification and food preservation technology, and Gaggenau’s “Fascinating Light” that spotlights food and “reacts” to user behavior. For example, when a drawer is opened, the lighting intensifies in that space.  Refrigerators and freezers are available in combination models and as columns, while wine cabinets are offered in 18-in. and 24-in. widths, with capacities of up to 110 bottles. The wine cabinets have three-zone climate and temperature control, fully adjustable shelving to accommodate various bottles and glasses, and infrared technology that measures the temperature of individual bottles in addition to the ambient cabinet temperature. The line will be available in Europe starting in December and rolled out globally in 2026. More info here.

Cabinetworks Taps CFO: Larry France has been named chief financial officer at Cabinetworks Group, a privately held cabinet manufacturer. He has been serving as interim CFO since last December. Industry News

Residential Construction Drops: New housing construction appears to be falling, according to the latest report from the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Privately owned housing starts fell 8.5 percent in August from July and were down 6 percent compared to August 2024. Single-family housing starts in August dropped 7 percent from July. Furthermore, building permits for homes in the private sector were off 3.7 percent monthly and plunged 11.1 percent YOY. August housing completions, however, rose 8.4 percent for the month but were 8.4 percent below August 2024 levels. More info here.

Cost of Home Ownership Keeps Rising: The U.S. Census Bureau released one-year estimates from a new American Community Survey, showing that the median monthly cost of home ownership for homeowners with a mortgage rose to $2,035 in 2024 from $1,960 in 2023. The figures are adjusted for inflation and reflect a YOY 3.8 percent jump. One measure of housing affordability is the amount households spend on costs such as mortgage payments, insurance, taxes, utilities, fees, and other expenses. In 2024, the median percentage of household income homeowners spent to cover these costs was 21.4 percent. More detail here.

Lumber Prices Drop: Lumber prices fell at the end of August in a typical seasonal slowdown, according to Madison’s Lumber Reporter. In the last week of August, the benchmark softwood lumber item — Western Spruce-Pine-Fir 2×4 — was $450 per thousand board feet, down 8 percent from the previous week and 10 percent lower than a month ago. However, prices were 43 percent higher than the same week in 2024 and 30 percent higher than in 2023. Tariffs on Canadian lumber exports to the U.S. came into effect in August, doubling the rate to 35 percent. This means that Canadian mills are likely to seek other markets in which to sell, potentially tightening supply in the U.S. when demand rebounds. Builderonline has more details.
