NKBA Northern California and California Capital Chapters recently co-hosted their annual “Design Crawl” event at the San Francisco Design Center.
Chapter members from Northern California and California Capital met at the Cosentino showroom, where Kerrie Kelly, CEO/Founder of Kerrie Kelly Studio and Creative Director of Fabuwood, shared the keynote message. Nureed Saeed, Northern California Chapter President and Creative Director of Nu Interiors, interviewed Kerrie Kelly, who is a design award-winner, influencer, and brand leader. Kerrie Kelly offered insights for designers seeking to build industry partnerships and expand their own design brands.
Following the keynote and breakfast, chapter members formed five groups for their Design Crawl, where they visited six outstanding showrooms, including Cosentino, Country Floors, Hewn, Kohler, Milestone Distributors and Visual Comfort. At the end of the showroom tours, both chapters met back together for a group lunch at Visual Comfort.
NKBA Northern California Chapter President Nureed Saeed said, “The Northern California Chapter created this annual event four years ago as a way to bring together designers and showrooms, offering both of our membership groups a unique opportunity to see the latest of what is being offered in the market, while also making valuable connections. We are happy to have invited our friends in the Capital Chapter to collaborate with us again and share in this unique experience.”

NKBA’s micro-credential program adds its ninth discipline.
By Dianne M. Pogoda
NKBA’s highly successful Specialty Badge program has added a new discipline: Appliance Specialist.
The program launched at KBIS 2019 with five badges and added three more in the interim. The Appliance Specialist is the ninth badge, joining Sales & Marketing, Floor Plans & Specifications, Color, Sustainability, Cabinetry, Remodeling, Lighting, and Universal Design. While NKBA’s industry-leading CKBD and CMKBD certifications are centered on designers, the badges may be earned by members in any sector of the industry, including designers, remodelers, manufacturers, dealers, educators, and skilled tradespeople. As an all-industry association, it’s part of NKBA’s ongoing mission to provide educational opportunities for all members at any stage of their professional development.
Requirements and testing for Specialty Badges are developed by NKBA’s Learning Department in conjunction with Subject Matter Experts in the particular discipline, following the NKBA’s 4th Edition K&B Planning Guidelines, building policies, access codes, and standards. For the Appliance Badge, NKBA gratefully acknowledges the time, expertise and insights from four industry professionals: Jared Costa, Director of National Sales & Product Training for Miele; Jonathan Barfell, currently Marketing Director at Schréder USA and previously Marketing Director at Liebherr Appliances; Heather Guerriero Dans, currently a consultant for Tulip Cooking modular burners and previously of GE’s Monogram luxury division, and independent consultant Paula Smith, AKBD, a veteran of GE and Fisher & Paykel in product management, showroom operations, and marketing.
Over the course of several months, the committee created the content and developed exam questions. Among the most critical points of the Appliance Badge, the experts concurred, is client assessment.
Barfell said the most important element is learning the right questions to ask the client. “Appliance options are endless, and knowing some specific solutions that help your clients’ needs saves them both time and money,” he said.
“We wanted to equip [badge holders] with the most important information relevant to appliances,” Dans recalled. “For instance, how do they cook? What kind of oven or burners do they need? Speed cooking, microwave, convection, induction, level of BTUs — it’s great for designers to be able to discuss the specifics to get the right products for their clients.”
Smith noted that two key elements of the badge include “a deep understanding of the various appliance options — styles, configurations, and feature sets — and how these can be selected to meet both aesthetic and lifestyle needs,” as well as “a working knowledge of the technology behind different appliance categories and the performance benefits of various appliances, helping professionals guide their clients with confidence.”
The appliance badge highlights the evolution of appliances with emphasis placed on product selection, categories, models, sizes, configurations, and installation methods for both indoor and outdoor spaces. An overview of product mechanics, cooking technologies and proper ventilation is central to the discussion, along with price and budget comparisons, client interaction, and evaluation.
Costa concurred, “The assessment of a client’s needs and preferences creates differentiation and elevates the level of service being provided. Next, simply gaining knowledge of the appliances [allows you to] apply that knowledge to the assessment. This is crucial to providing each client with an individual approach. The most well-informed professionals will inherently guide a client with thoughtful planning and an understanding of how to make the most of their space.”
To earn the badge, candidates must complete five learning objectives, demonstrating competency and knowledge of the following:
• Different product categories and options within cooking, cooling, ventilation, and cleaning.
• Appliance placement within the principles of kitchen and home design.
• Cooking technologies, effectiveness, functionality, and ventilation requirements.
• How to effectively specify appliances based on the client’s needs.
• Outdoor kitchen appliances and space planning.
“The technology changes pretty quickly, and designers may not necessarily stay on top of all the latest developments,” said Dans, noting that the badge prep helps keep them up to date and understand these advancements. “Especially at the high end, it’s beneficial to the client for the designer to take them shopping for appliances so they can consider everything that’s available.”
Badge candidates must also show their knowledge of energy efficiency, including the EnergyGuide label and the U.S. EPA’s Energy Star label, the impact of various cooking appliances on indoor air quality, water filtration, food preservation, different types of heat transference in various cooking processes, code compliance, work zone clearances, and other mechanical, technical, and layout considerations.
“The significance of the badges can’t be stressed enough,” Costa observed. “In this age, information is everywhere. However, useful information can be hard to recognize. The NKBA Specialty Badge Program is a testimony to members that the organization provides support and service that has relevant benefits and true value. For the badge holder, they have an ability to demonstrate and communicate their expertise in an objective manner.”
The program is self-directed and fully online, where study material and exams are accessible at any time, for the convenience of the participant.
The Specialty Badge Program allows members to broaden their toolkit, expand their industry knowledge, and stay current with the latest technologies. It’s also considered a beneficial stepping-stone for members who are interested in becoming certified.
“The program equips industry professionals with targeted knowledge that enhances their expertise,” said Smith, “whether they are building on foundational skills or advancing their understanding of a specialized area.”
Barfell added, “If you are just starting out in the industry, understanding types of appliances and installation methods are critical. As a well-established player, understanding the most recent advancements in technology complements what you already know.”
After earning a badge, recipients may showcase their credential by displaying a digital badge image across several platforms, and they also receive a certificate of completion and lapel pin.
“There is a certain expectation that comes with being associated with the NKBA,” said Costa. “The industry deems members as informed and competent… as leaders who constantly seek to have and provide up-to-date information. The NKBA’s Specialty Badge Program is a vital part of this. It is a means of ensuring that members can deliver those expectations and even surpass them. When a kitchen is designed with a complete perspective and all of the information available, the entire industry benefits.”
Barfell pointed out, “As someone who has spent over 10 years educating in the appliance space, I am still learning each day. Technologies are changing so fast, and it might seem daunting to try and keep up. Thankfully, the Specialty Badge offers a very solid foundation on one of the largest kitchen investments your client will have.”
Smith concluded that this industry is always evolving, so ongoing learning is essential. “The NKBA’s Specialty Badge Program offers both newcomers and veterans a valuable way to continue building their expertise,” she said. “The Specialty Bade program provides an opportunity to enhance members’ skill set in complementary areas, further enriching the overall strength of the kitchen and bath industry.”

Gutierrez wrote NKBA’s Economic Indicators column for many years.
By Dianne M. Pogoda
Manuel D. Gutierrez, a longtime NKBA contributor and economist for Kohler Co., died peacefully at his home in Kohler, WI, on Sept. 2, after a battle with cancer. He was 79.
An astute observer of the kitchen and bath industry as well as the overall economy, Gutierrez spent more than 25 years at Kohler Co. in market research, and wrote the Economic Indicators column for NKBA’s newsfeed for more than a decade.
“Manuel was instrumental in helping me envision and shape the future of NKBA’s research strategy,” said Bill Darcy, Global President and CEO of NKBA, “including confirming what would become our economic focus with the Kitchen & Bath Market Outlook and KBMI. I am so proud of the industry authority NKBA has become, and it all started with Manuel.”
“As NKBA’s Consulting Economist for many years, Manuel helped me brainstorm research topics that would be of interest to all NKBA member segments,” said Tricia Zach, Head of Research. “He also introduced me to individuals and organizations who have since become trusted research partners of the NKBA. For years, Manuel authored the Association’s Economic Indicators column, making crucial economic data relevant to our industry and educating our members. He was a pleasure to work with, a joyful, charming man who always had a warm greeting for the many people he knew at KBIS or at economics conferences. He always spoke lovingly about his family — but was quick to ask about your family, too. Manuel was a friend to NKBA, to the industry, and to me.”
Gutierrez was a true Renaissance man with many interests. He was a college instructor, teaching at universities in New Jersey (Stockton State College) and in Barquisimeto, Venezuela; a serious woodworker, crafting Barbie houses with penthouses for his daughters and miniature historic shipping vessels, and a student of world languages, of which Chinese stands out as receiving the most time for writing and speaking in the later decades of his life.
He was a passionate traveler, always with his suitcase at the ready. He blogged about his travels to Morocco, Taiwan, Japan, Russia, numerous trips to China and India, and other parts of the globe.
Manuel was a bicycle racer, a hobby he maintained until just this past April. It was during his long bike rides of upwards of 10 to 20 miles that he would memorize and repeat various works of poetry, such as Dante’s Inferno from “La Divina Commedia.” He would recite an entire canto each day on the trail.
Manuel de Jesus Gutierrez Martinez was born in San Cristobal de Totonicapan, Guatemala, on June 8, 1945. He was the fourth of six children of the late Manuel and Maria Consuelo (Martinez) Gutierrez.
An avid reader, by the time he finished high school, Manuel had read every single book in the library of his youth in Quetzaltenango city, with his handwritten name on each book’s frontispiece as proof. Following high school in Guatemala, Manuel came to the U.S. for undergraduate studies at Saint Louis University and prepared a PhD (ABD) in Economics and Mathematics at Saint Louis University, reaching candidacy in April 1975.
He married E. Michele Armon in St. Louis in 1971. They were married for nearly 53 years, until her death in March. Manuel settled with his wife and children in Sheboygan, WI, and then moved to Kohler WI, for long-term work with the Kohler Co. Early on, he was Senior Mathematician for Kohler, and later directed the company’s Market Research area of the Kitchen and Bath Group’s International Division, becoming part of Kohler’s Quarter Century Club.
While at Kohler, Manuel was integral to large global change in the business. He created and actively wrote for a newsletter his department prepared for Kohler Co. worldwide on kitchen and bath trends and housing starts. He was always busy making predictions and preparing graphs of data for better visualization and understanding.
Gutiérrez was very active with the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies, a research center dedicated to advance policy and practice concerning housing, from which he was awarded a special recognition of achievement upon his retirement. Manuel was an active leading member of The Economic Club of Sheboygan, where he was given an emeritus award. He also had a stint in local politics, serving as village elder in the Village of Kohler for a number of years.
After retiring, he continued to consult for various firms and kept up a blog, EconLives, on economic and market trends.
Manuel is survived by his two daughters, Maya Consuelo (Claude Bauschinger) Gutierrez of Brooklyn, NY, and Andrea Lorene (Jayant Sirohi) Gutierrez of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Siri Ratna Gutierrez Sirohi and Asha Sundari Gutierrez Sirohi; siblings Maria Consuelo (Paco) de Perez de Anton, Remigio (Olga) Gutierrez, Roberto (Maggie) Gutierrez, and Carmen, la Chiqui, Gutierrez, all of Guatemala.
Along with his wife and his parents, Manuel was predeceased by his sister, Gloria (Jorge) de Prado and his sister-in-law Mary Armon. For more information, including details of a celebration of his life on Nov. 16 at Ballhorn Chapels in Sheboygan, WI, click here. Memorial donations may be made in Manuel’s name to a charitable fund for Arts Education Scholarships.

Alexander Drozdovitch won first place with this bath design in the 2023-2024 Student Design Competition.
By NKBA Staff
NKBA | KBIS is excited to announce the 2023 – 2024 Student Design Competition winners. The annual competition, open exclusively to NKBA | KBIS student members, features top prizes of $5000 and travel packages to KBIS 2025 in Las Vegas.
Paying homage to NKBA’s 60th anniversary, the 2023-2024 competition scenario featured a mid-century home with architectural elements common to the 1960s. Students were tasked with updating the home’s kitchen and primary bathroom to make them more modern and functional for an active family of four. Competition participants were challenged by the small square footage of the rooms and the expectation to incorporate a mix of vintage style and touches of modern art into the finished designs.
The NKBA | KBIS Student Design Competition is generously sponsored by Fisher & Paykel. Winners in both the kitchen and bath categories receive scholarships in the following amounts:
First Place: $5000
Second Place: $2500
Third Place: $1000

The next generation of kitchen and bath designers depends on great educators.
Paula Kennedy, CMKBD.
By Dianne M. Pogoda
A ubiquitous bumper sticker reads, “If you can read this, thank a teacher.” For homeowners, that might be tweaked to, “If you love your kitchen, thank a design teacher.”
The kitchen and bath industry, like any other, relies on the passion and dedication of instructors to pass the knowledge, skills, and practical application of the craft to rising designers, tradespeople, and specifiers.
Whether these instructors are educators by trade or teach in addition to pursuing their own professions within the industry, they share an affinity for the subject, a desire to nurture, and they gain immense satisfaction in giving back to the community.
Paula Kennedy, CMKBD, juggles her own business — Timeless Kitchen Design in Seattle — and teaching as an adjunct professor at Highline Community College in Des Moines, WA, and at the Heritage School of Interior Design, also in Seattle. She’s also an NKBA-approved CEU speaker at the Voices from the Industry Conference at KBIS and at chapter events. She teaches an introductory course to interior design at Highline, and kitchen and bath design at Heritage.
“I do believe the more we teach, the more we learn. The act of teaching takes us into a whole different level of learning. If you want to learn your craft like an expert, teach it.” — Paula Kennedy, CMKBD
“There’s something great about teaching and giving back to this industry that I love so much, and to the next generation,” Kennedy said. “The next generation is where it’s at. I learn so much from them, they look at things so differently. It’s something in my DNA — my father was a teacher, too — I do believe the more we teach, the more we learn. The act of teaching takes us into a whole different level of learning. If you want to learn your craft like an expert, teach it. If you can teach it, that means you really know it. You know it deep down, it’s not just ‘head knowledge.’”

Jim DePietro has been with Lehigh Carbon Community College, an NKBA Affiliated School in Schnecksville, PA, for 37 years. He’s currently Technology Coordinator, overseeing all the department’s programs and teaching in each discipline: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, Kitchen and Bath Design, and Heating and Air Conditioning. His goal was to be a teacher, and he graduated with a degree in industrial teaching from Millersville University. But before pursuing a career in education, he spent about eight years in manufacturing, working from machinist to supervisor and then into engineering. He began teaching night classes at LCCC and finally took a full-time teaching position in 1987.
“My industrial experience was the most invaluable time of my career to shape me into the instructor that I am,” he said. “LCCC is accredited college, and it has helped as a recruiting tool as some folks like the idea that we truly are backed by a national association and our curriculum is based on a professional platform.”
Becoming a Teacher
There are several routes to becoming an instructor at the post-secondary or college level. The requirements are different for a full professor compared to an instructor level or adjunct professor.
“The qualifications for becoming a college professor are either a minimum of a master’s degree in your field or a bachelor’s degree with related experience,” said DePietro. “That is the path that I came in under until I did get my master’s degree.”
DePietro said teaching at the college level is “extremely satisfying.”
“It challenges me to give the students the best experience possible and help them to mature and take on responsibilities that will prepare them for their professional careers,” he said. “In addition to teaching, our responsibility is also to place them in technical positions. So, to see them through their educational experience and then to assist in obtaining a job is extremely satisfying. I would highly recommend this profession to anyone.”
For Kennedy, the journey was different. She had been on the advisory council for Highline for years, well before she started teaching, and she occasionally spoke at the school.
“I always thought that someday, I’d like to teach — but I didn’t have a master’s degree, and most colleges require a certain level of education,” Kennedy noted. “But one of my friends on the advisory council suggested that being an adjunct professor had different requirements, so that’s how I was able to qualify as an instructor. There are multiple pathways to becoming an educator.”
She said her industry experience has brought a different dimension to her classroom. “My students love it that I am active in the business and not solely a full-time educator, because they see that this is an attainable goal,” she observed. “I can bring real-life experiences to the classroom, and take them on field trips to a job site or a showroom.”
Kennedy said she wasn’t always comfortable speaking in front of crowds, and was shy in her younger years. “If you’re not comfortable speaking, you can learn how to do this, how to gain confidence,” she advised. “You can learn to create a curriculum, so don’t let that hold you back.”
The Bottom Line
No matter how they landed in the classroom, the educators concur that they get as much from teaching as their students.
“At my core, I love connecting with and inspiring people, and if I can do that, there’s nothing greater than inspiring someone else to go beyond their limitations,” said Kennedy. “Inspiring them and giving them confidence to continue on their path is so rewarding. What I learn from them is incredible. Seeing the ‘a-ha’ moments on their faces and the feedback about what they learn and how I teach is amazing.”
DePietro mused, “Some days I find it hard to believe that I get paid for having so much fun. I believe our program is so unique in that the students get to build a real kitchen and bathroom and have such an amazing project experience they can include in their portfolio.
I am so fortunate to walk this path in life and call it a career.”
