You Can Make a Difference

Volunteering is a passion and the kitchen and bath industry is lucky to have such engaging members who want to give back to their professional community. There are several ways to do this as highlighted below – through volunteering at a National level, chapter level or pursuing additional NKBA volunteer opportunities. Please review each in detail and see which volunteer opportunity works for you!

Message from the Chapters Team

Dear Chapter Officers,

Happy May! We hope you are having a successful spring season! Our big news for the month is Chapter elections. Self-nominations will open in mid-May for President, Programs Chair, and Communications Chair.

One very important change to elections this year: Programs Chair position will be a one-year term in 2026, serving January 1 through December 31, 2026, with a two-year term election for 2027-28. This change will shift Programs Chair elections to an alternate cycle from Presidents. Our Chapter Presidents, Chapter Leadership Committee, and NKBA Chapters team all agree that this is necessary. We will discuss this shift on our monthly Zoom calls this month, or feel free to reach out with questions in the meantime.

Thank you again to our awesome Chapter Officers and to your Recruitment Committees who will help identify candidates throughout the year.  NKBA will send an email inviting all active members (except students) to submit a self-nomination form by July 31. The Chapters team is ready to assist with ballots and all other questions as Chapters hold elections in August. Please remember as you consider candidates for the five positions: Chapter Officers are eligible to serve up to four consecutive full calendar years before rotating off council for one year.

VFTI 2026 call for submissions will be out soon with a deadline of June 30. VFTI program speakers will be notified by August 31, 2025 for VFTI at KBIS 2026, to be held in Orlando, February 17-19, 2026. (Mark your calendars for Leader2Leader on February 16!)

NKBA K&B Designer members are invited to apply for an exclusive grant sponsored by Fabuwood – the 2025-2026 Certified Designer Grant Program. Twenty designers will be selected to earn CKBD certification. Applications are open now through May 31. Thank you again to our NKBA Chapters Platinum Sponsor Fabuwood for supporting NKBA K&B designers and making goals a reality!

NKBA Student members are encouraged to apply for the annual NKBA | KBIS Ellen Cheever Award. This exclusive award package includes complimentary access to one of our NKBA Specialty Badge programs, a free copy of the NKBA Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines, and free access to our Knowledge Base information platform. Students are invited to apply via this link through May 16

We are thrilled to share the great news that all 2025 Initiative Grants submitted were approved by the Chapter Leadership Committee! Many of the Chapter initiatives for 2025 focused on promoting the importance of certification; engaging students with mentor programs and networking opportunities; and getting involved with our Skilled Labor Workforce program. We continue to be inspired by your initiatives and leadership!

This week, we are excited to be in Orlando at Coverings with our Florida Chapters. Thank you again to Central Florida; South Florida; Florida Treasure Coast; North Florida and other NKBA Chapters and members for celebrating design, spreading the K&B word, and welcoming new prospective NKBA members through your booth at the show! We were delighted to enjoy an NKBA exclusive event with UMI in Orlando. Kudos to our Central Florida Chapter Officers and UMI for hosting this fantastic event!

Another exciting event bringing Chapters together is the Chicago Mid West and Indiana State Chapters’ road trip next week to Kohler, WI. Chapter members will enjoy an exclusive tour and firsthand look at Kohler’s innovative products and cutting-edge technologies. What a great opportunity for two fantastic Chapters to engage and connect!

Congratulations to the Metro New York Chapter and their sold-out fundraising event for PAWS for WAR. Metro New York Chapter attracted media attention and raised over $4,000 that went directly to the organization, whose mission is to bring together veterans, first responders and rescued animals, creating unbreakable bonds that foster healing and mutual understanding. Kudos to Metro New York for this fantastic event – and another one on the horizon, with Casino Night just weeks away!

Cheers again to all 70 NKBA Chapters across the U.S. and Canada – we look forward to working with you in all your initiatives!

What You Will Learn

Good lighting is critical in bringing together all the different components of a project to life – everything that all the professionals do for the project will be for naught if the lighting (and also, the controls) isn’t done well. Think about the color schemes that the Interior Designer uses; the different construction techniques and materials the architect and trades use; and what about all of the audio/video/security/etc. components that the Integrator carefully plans and brings together? All of the aforementioned work and vision will be much less satisfactory without good lighting. What do we mean by good lighting? It is Lighting that is thoughtful, carefully planned and coordinated, utilizes high-quality and well-controlled fixtures. And in the end – good lighting should be something that is just experienced in the space, and some would argue, not even noticed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Find out why early planning for integrated lighting is important
  • Asking the question and why partnering with a lighting professional is important
  • Key words to listen and look out for, differentiating between different lighting design techniques

Streamlined Lighting: A Consistent, Repeatable Path to Illumination

Functional lighting, such as under cabinet lighting, interior cabinet lighting, etc., often needs to provide more than aesthetic appeal – customers are looking for lighting that improves their quality of life in a kitchen, bathroom, or closet. Yet, the perceived complexity of planning and installing functional lighting is often a barrier that leads to designers deferring decisions to the electrician. When control of this critical aspect is handed off, the designer often finds themselves catching the blame when a customer is unsatisfied with lighting that is lacking in visual appeal and functionality.

In this presentation, we will help designers looking to integrate functional lighting into their offering or those who cannot seem to find a rhythm to formulate a more standardized methodology that spans from the planning stage all the way through installation and final touches. Participants will gain understanding of the core components of a low voltage lighting installation, simplifying Kelvin temperature selection, picking the right products and laying them out, and basic troubleshooting. By simplifying the path to achieving beautiful, yet functional results, we open the door to increased revenue on every project with minimal increase in workload.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the five core components of a low voltage lighting installation
  • Recognize that tunable-white lighting simplifies the planning process, saving time and increasing overall customer satisfaction
  • Learn how choosing quality products reduces time investment and expenses in the long term
  • Discover how a quality lighting designer support team allows the designer to delegate layout responsibilities and save time
  • Learn how to spot visual cues that gives clues into what could possibly be malfunctioning in a lighting installation

KBIS 2025 NEXTStage Panel Discusses the Ecodesign and Sustainability of European Kitchen Furniture

By Donna Heiderstadt

An informative discussion about the top features of European kitchen furniture — including modular design and eco-friendliness — took place at KBIS 2025 on Feb. 25 as part of the Native Trails-sponsored Sustainability track at NEXTStage. The session, titled European Kitchen Furniture – Ecodesign for Sustainable Products: What It Is, Why It Matters and How It’s Different, was moderated by Ken Busch, Publisher of Material Intelligence, and featured four panelists: Jeremy Parcels, Principal Designer at Lakewood, CO-based Parcels Design Studio, LLC; Alina Selbach, Head of Business for TUV Rheinland LGA Products GmbH; Dwayne Lusk, Principal of Lancaster, TX-based Kitchen Logistics; and Jan Kurth, CEO of the Association of the German Furniture Industry (VDM). Here are some highlights of the discussion.

Where It All Began and Where & How It’s Made

As moderator, Busch kicked off the discussion by noting that as a journalist covering the industry in the 1980s he remembers asking whether the European kitchen would ever come to America. “Forty years later, it’s almost a reality,” he noted. Then he introduced Kurth, who offered a primer on the origins of German kitchen design, showing images of the “efficiently organized” circa-1926 Frankfurter Küche, the first handle-less kitchen cabinetry of the 1960s, and the sleek, modern European kitchen that is the center of the home.

Kurth said the kitchen industry in Europe totals $20 billion euros, with kitchen production by country dominated by Germany (40 percent) and Italy (21 percent), with Spain, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Poland, and Belgium all in the 2-to-7-percent range.

He said the kitchen industry in Europe is highly data-driven and circular, with both retail and direct-to-consumer distribution and a focus on refurbishment/remanufacturing that involves upcycling, upgrading, and reusing.

The industry uses sophisticated robotics and machinery for high-volume, efficient production that maintains a high quality standard. There is a “digital product passport” that follows every product through the process. That quality, Kurth said, also extends to installation.

As far as sustainability, manufacturers source wood from sustainable forests and make products designed to be long-lasting.

Busch added that since “ecodesign” was in the session’s title, he wanted to point out that wood is 50 percent naturally captured carbon. He said the eco-focus of European manufacturing process also ties to the issue of indoor air quality, a rising concern for wellness focused consumers.

Quality Control and Modular Design

Selbach joined the conversation to discuss her company’s role more than 150-year history in ensuring that consumer products meet the standard for quality and safety. She said that TUV Rheinland LGA Products works with manufacturers in developing product and testing components “We start ensuring the safety and quality of products during sourcing and production,” she explained.

Lusk began his remarks by explaining that he started his company to bring European kitchens to the U.S., specifically to Texas , and Parcels noted that he has been designing with European kitchen furniture for the past 16 years.

A key element of these products’ appeal, moderator Busch noted, is their modular design that is very systematic for efficiency — cabinets are easy to design, install, use, and uninstall.

Selbach added that with the expansion of the ecodesign movement, manufacturers are also incorporating repairable hinges. When something breaks, she says, “consumers don’t throw it away because they can repair it instead with replacement parts.” She said that manufacturers are coming to her in the design and testing phase for evaluation of new products and their parts for durability and safety.

For Lusk, the appeal of European kitchen furniture/cabinetry is that the products are “very systematic and very well thought out.” This results in cabinets that are easy to install and easy to update functionality wise, he said.

Kurth added that these cabinets’ modular design with fixed dimensions and quality construction make it “easy to replace specific components without having to change the whole kitchen.”

Parcels concurred, noting that the cabinets he works with feature detachable fronts. “It’s easy to update the look without having to replace every single box,” he said. Parcels also cited the fact that lower cabinets feature adjustable legs, which can accommodate different heights. “These are products that improve the quality of home life through function.”

Moderator Busch wrapped up the session by lauding European kitchen furniture manufacturers for offering “sustainable systems in products that are stream-lined and energy efficient.”

Harvard Report: Strength Amid Challenges: In its most recent report, “Improving America’s Housing 2025,” the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies said the U.S. remodeling market surpassed $600 billion in the wake of the pandemic, and despite recent softening, remains 50 percent above pre-pandemic levels. The pandemic fueled unprecedented spending on remodeling and this trend is likely to remain “extraordinarily strong,” thanks to aging housing stock and record high property values. However, challenges including inflation, a shortage of skilled labor, and industry fragmentation could hurt the ability to meet demand. Pro Remodeler has more.

High Point Agenda Set: The High Point Market Authority has revealed its programming and events for its spring market, April 26 to 28, and special pop-up venue, The Point, a daily lounge and eatery operating from April 25 to 29 in High Point, NC. The Future of Sustainable Certifications: What Kitchen and Bath Pros Need to Know

NKBA | KBIS gives the low down on what’s up with the standards shaping the future.

By Nicholas Tamarin

As sustainability becomes a driving force in home design, professionals in the kitchen and bath industry must stay informed about the key certifications shaping the future. Programs like LEED, WELL, and other sustainability standards are setting benchmarks for environmentally responsible, health-conscious design choices.

By incorporating these principles into design and product selection, professionals can create spaces that are not only stylish and functional but also healthier and more environmentally responsible, driving positive change in sustainable design and providing clients with kitchens and bathrooms that support well-being and environmental stewardship. Let’s take a look:

LEED Certification: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design

One of the most recognized sustainability standards, LEED focuses on energy efficiency, water conservation, and eco-friendly materials. Kitchen and bath professionals can incorporate LEED principles by selecting Energy Star-certified appliances, using low-VOC finishes and adhesives, and integrating water-saving fixtures like low-flow faucets and high-efficiency toilets.

WELL Certification: Prioritizing Human Health and Wellness

Unlike LEED, which emphasizes environmental impact, WELL Certification focuses on health and well-being in built environments. “Health begins at home, because that’s where we spend most of our lives,” says Rachel Hodgdon, President and CEO of the International WELL Building Institute. “Kitchens and bathrooms, in particular, offer a powerful opportunity to reimagine the ways in which we nourish ourselves and our families and practice daily self-care.”

WELL principles include ensuring optimal air and water quality, utilizing non-toxic materials, and enhancing natural and artificial lighting designs to improve well-being. IWBI introduced the WELL for Residential framework in 2024, a globally applicable standard for homes prioritizing well-being. As Hodgdon notes, the framework includes evidence-based strategies across 10 concepts: Air, Water, Nourishment, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Light, Sound, Materials, Mind, and Community.

Other Key Sustainability Certifications

Beyond LEED and WELL, several other certifications guide sustainable kitchen and bath design: WaterSense (EPA), GreenGuard, Cradle to Cradle, and FSC Certification. For kitchen and bath professionals, understanding and applying these sustainability certifications is essential for meeting growing consumer demand, enhancing home efficiency and long-term value, and staying ahead of industry regulations and green building trends.
