Five Questions With… Tyler Williams

The kitchen designer, one of just a few NKBA members to have earned all nine Specialty Badges, has consistently amplified his skills over the course of his career, despite a few bumps in the road.

By Dianne M. Pogoda

The challenges that life presents often lead to our biggest opportunities. Tyler Williams, a kitchen designer with The Home Depot in Provo, UT, identified his passion for design at age nine, while helping his mom — herself an amateur, self-taught designer — with a DIY kitchen renovation. Fueling his dreams of interior design and architecture, he consumed as much from the design world as possible. He took classes in drafting and multi-media throughout middle school and high school, attended show houses with his family, studied floor plans in magazines and sketched his own plans relentlessly, amassing more than 150 designs by the time he was a sophomore.

“My mom has always been my biggest advocate and has always inspired me to do my best,” he recalled. “She was the one that sparked my initial interest in the design world at a young age when we remodeled our own kitchen.”

But he had a few setbacks with health, the sudden loss of a family member, and was unable to finish college. He found himself off-track, but happily working at Walmart, learning how to deal with the public — and then COVID-19 hit. Ultimately, he took a part-time job at The Home Depot, where an astute HR manager listened to his story, identified his talent and passion, and placed him in a training program to become a kitchen designer.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I was doing something I was passionate about and loving my job! Full circle, I was finally where I belonged from the beginning. The Home Depot’s partnership with the NKBA has been the key to my ability to have these opportunities,” he said. “This is an employer that has believed in me from day one and continues to do so.”

He recently celebrated his fourth year designing for The Home Depot, which participates in an NKBA badge-sponsorship program, and has surpassed $1 million in sales for each fiscal year. He has earned multiple Specialist of the Month recognitions at his store and was a five-time Specialist of the District honoree. In addition, Williams received the Designer Excellence Award from American Woodmark in 2023 and 2024. After completing his ninth badge in April, Williams is aiming for CKBD certification.

“No matter how many times I feel reduced to ashes,” he said, “I always find a way to rebuild and improve even more.”

Williams, a member of NKBA’s Mountain States Chapter, discussed his inspiration and pathway to earning all nine badges and how that has helped him grow in his career.

NKBA: What inspired you to earn all 9 badges?

TW: My mom, my customers, my friends and family, my coworkers, my workplace, my education, and my personal drive to increase my worth and always do my best have contributed to my inspiration. Why wouldn’t I want to be more specialized in kitchen/bath design to further assist my customers? The benefits are endless as the badges only allow me to design even better projects.

NKBA: What do you find to be the most important benefit of the badges?

TW:  Being able to sell a more complete project by having a clearer understanding of the individual components of a kitchen and how they coincide. This not only benefits me but also each of my clients.

NKBA: Which was easiest for you, which was hardest for you, and why?

TW:  Cabinetry, Floorplans & Specifications, Appliances, and Color were easiest for me as I was most familiar with those subjects. Remodeling was probably the hardest because of the length and breadth of the material. I was originally intimidated by Sales & Marketing, Sustainability, and Universal Design but as I dove into the material, I realized that I knew more than I expected. Each badge contained information that I didn’t know before, and I found value in all nine.

NKBA: Is there one badge that has helped you more than the others?

TW:  Color really built on my previous knowledge from Interior Design courses I took in college and has only helped my confidence in reassuring customers with their color choices, and helping them with paint colors for their walls, tile selections, as well as the more obvious cabinet pairings for multi-toned projects. Lighting has also been advantageous in recommending new light fixtures.

NKBA: What did you learn that surprised you about the process?

TW: How much I already knew, and how much more can be learned in the world of kitchen and bath.

While NKBA certification has long been recognized across the K&B world as a standard of design excellence, it is available exclusively to the designer community. Designers earn their Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer (CKBD) credential and may level up to Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designer (CMKBD).

The badges were developed by NKBA and subject matter experts as a micro-credentialing program for all categories of membership — designers as well as remodelers, retailers, distributors, manufacturers, sales and marketing professionals, consultants and any other industry-related pro. The badges provide personalized learning and allow NKBA members to gain specific knowledge of a particular trade or skill.Currently, the nine NKBA Specialty Badges include Floor Plans & Specifications, Lighting, Cabinetry, Sales & Marketing, Sustainability, Remodeling, Universal Design, Color, and Appliances. The first Specialty Badge costs $199 with subsequent Badges available for $149 each. Badge packages include all study materials and testing, and NKBA periodically offers special promotions for additional member discounts. For more information about the badges, visit NKBA.org/badges.

Miele’s Bold Outreach: Premium German appliance brand Miele launched a provocative creative campaign expressly for the North American market in June. The campaign, “Rumored for a Reason,” is running on video, print, digital, and social media platforms and is evocative of European cinema. Acclaimed director Janicza Bravo (“Zola,” “Gregory Go Boom,” “The Bear”) filmed the suite of cinematic spots highlighting Miele’s innovative engineering and longevity, with “gossipy” statements like “Miele outlasts most marriages” or “increases property value.” The goal was to introduce the brand to a wider North American consumer base while leveraging its inherent European mystique, according to Thorsten Brandt, SVP and Global Head of Brand & Customer Experience at Miele. “Our ‘Rumored for a Reason’ campaign fuels this mystique by transforming the extraordinary truths behind Miele’s heritage and quality into irresistible, gossip-worthy rumors,” he said. “With Miele’s signature style and dry wit, the integrated campaign playfully taps into our legacy — turning global admiration into intrigue as we grow our presence in North America.”  Learn more here.

Lotte Partners with TCF Supply: Lotte Chemical and Texas Counter Fitters (TCF Supply) have entered a strategic distribution agreement for TCF to serve as exclusive distributor of Lotte’s Radianz Quartz surfaces throughout the South-Central U.S., expanding access to the brand’s premium quartz products across the region. TCF has a robust distribution network throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana, and the partnership will improve lead times and widen access to Lotte’s innovative engineered stone. Learn more about Radianz and Lotte’s full product line here.

Matthias Bertl, CEO of Hettich America. Courtesy of Hettich.

Hettich Taps Bertl as CEO: Hettich America has named Matthias Bertl as CEO. He joined Hettich in 2018 and has worked mainly in Asia, most recently as managing director of Hettich Singapore, Hettich Indonesia and Hettich Vietnam. Prior to that, he held positions in brand management at Blum Southeast Asia and as Head of Procurement Asia at ING Bank N.V. In his new role, based at Hettich America’s Buford, GA, headquarters, he will oversee U.S. operations and expand brand visibility and market share in the North American market. Learn more here.

Kallista Promotes Dornbracht: Alexander Dornbracht, managing director of Kallista, has been promoted to vice president and general manager of Kallista and Robern, part of Kohler’s Luxe Division. He is the fourth generation of his family in the business, and built his career in multiple roles in sales and marketing organizations across various industries, and he holds an international MBA from the University of San Diego. KBB has the story.

New Home Sales Down, Inventory Up in May: Sales of new single-family houses plunged 13.7 percent in May from April, and were 6.3 percent below May 2024 sales, according to the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. At the same time, the inventory of available new homes for sale edged up 1.4 percent from April and 8.1 percent higher than May 2024, indicating a slowdown in sales. The current inventory reflects a supply of 9.8 months, which is 18.1 percent above April’s level. The slowdown is attributable to elevated mortgage interest rates and consumer uncertainty. Five Questions With… Jennifer Fiorenza

The President of the NKBA Southern Ohio/Kentucky Chapter is currently pursuing a master’s degree in design and construction at Northwestern University.

Jennifer Fiorenza is the Director of Preconstruction at The English Contractor, a custom residential builder in Cincinnati, Ohio, and currently serves as President of the NKBA Southern Ohio/Kentucky Chapter. She works closely with homeowners, designers, and architects to guide each project through the earliest phases—from scope and feasibility to budgeting and alignment.

Fiorenza’s role is centered on collaboration: helping teams stay connected, informed, and coordinated as a shared vision takes shape. “What I enjoy most is supporting the design process by making sure the project has a strong foundation before we ever ‘break ground,’” Fiorenza says. “It is incredibly rewarding to be part of a team where design and construction come together to create something truly special.” We asked her to give us more insights into her burgeoning career.

What’s your background?

Design has always been a part of how I see the world. I was raised by an artist mother and an engineer father, which gave me a balanced perspective—equal parts creative and analytical. I didn’t start my career in design or construction; I worked in technology and disaster recovery for a global law firm, then paused to raise my sons.

How about educationally?

I earned my undergraduate degree in journalism and economics from The Ohio State University in 1995. Lifelong learning is incredibly important to me. Whether earning a master’s degree or attending CEU sessions through NKBA, I believe in constantly building new skills to better support projects.

How did you get into kitchen and bath design?

When I moved to Cincinnati in 2012, I hired Craig Russell, founder and owner of The English Contractor, to renovate my kitchen. I sketched the layout and cabinet elevations by hand before the design process even began, and that collaborative spirit throughout the project led to an unexpected job offer. I always say that renovation was a very long job interview. Today, I may not be designing kitchens and baths daily, but my NKBA training gives me a deeper understanding of design intent—allowing me to build with clarity, coordination, and deep respect for the vision shared by both the designer and the client.

How and why did you get into the NKBA, and how has it benefited your career?

I joined the NKBA in early 2019 after being encouraged by industry friends, and it quickly became one of the most valuable decisions I’ve made. What began as a way to connect with peers became a platform for professional growth. Through the NKBA, I have gained technical knowledge, expanded my network locally and nationally. I earned my AKBD certification in 2021 and hold a specialty badge in Remodeling, which brought both confidence and credibility to my role as a builder in kitchen and bath spaces. I’m especially passionate about how the NKBA brings together every part of our industry—designers, builders, and the trades. The NKBA does an outstanding job honoring the creativity of design while also elevating the craftsmanship and collaboration that make it all possible.

What’s next for you, and what do you see as next for the industry?

I’m currently pursuing a Master of Science in Executive Management for Design and Construction at Northwestern University and will graduate in December 2025. It’s been an incredible opportunity to deepen my leadership in this space.

I’m most excited about how the kitchen and bath industry is moving toward more integrated, team-based project delivery. Clients increasingly expect seamless collaboration between designers and builders, and that is where the best results come from. I am also watching how technology is evolving our field. AI-driven design and construction tools are beginning to transform how we plan, coordinate, and make decisions, allowing us to work more efficiently without sacrificing creativity. Whether it is through embracing innovation, supporting sustainability, or engaging the trades as true project partners, the future of kitchen and bath is about working smarter—and working together.

NKBA Ottawa Transforms Women’s Shelter Kitchen With Community Support

The Chrysalis House leveled up with a long list of helping hands from across the industry.

By Nicholas Tamarin

In a remarkable display of community collaboration and generosity, the NKBA Ottawa Chapter has successfully completed a much-needed kitchen renovation for Chrysalis House, a 25-room inclusive women’s shelter that provides a safe haven for women escaping abusive environments in Western Ottawa. The initiative, almost three years in the making, has transformed a worn-out, inefficient kitchen into a highly functional and welcoming space, symbolizing a significant step forward for the residents.

The inspiration for this ambitious project struck Natalia Pierce, CMKBD, and current NKBA Ottawa Chapter President, during a Chapter Star Awards event in Orlando in 2022. “The NKBA BC Chapter had done a community outreach project where they had done some significant renovations for one of the community centers,” Pierce recalled. “It was kind of an inspiration, and I thought, we’d all survived the COVID era, much better than others. We had abundant projects and activity throughout those more difficult years. I just felt it was an inspiring story from the BC chapter that led to the inspiration to do something for our community.”

The Ottawa chapter began its search for a shelter in need of renovation in 2022. After months of outreach, Chrysalis House responded, detailing the challenges posed by their aging and inefficient kitchen, which was over 20 years old and showing signs of extreme use. Recognizing the critical need for an improved space, NKBA Ottawa mobilized a dedicated team of designers, industry professionals, and sponsors.

The design phase was spearheaded by Deborah Gervais, AKBD, Aviva Ben Choreen, CMKBD, and Pierce, who worked closely with the shelter’s staff, including Director Aaron Badick, to create a layout tailored to the needs of its high-use environment. This included adding a second large single-bowl sink, increasing counter depth to accommodate a large sanitizer unit, and maximizing pullout storage with all drawers on the bases. Addressing a significant pain point, the team also relocated an inconvenient commercial grease trap.

After 30 months of dedicated fundraising and planning, the dream became a reality. The project’s total value exceeded $80,000, made possible by significant contributions from various partners. The initial fundraising effort kicked off with a silent auction at the chapter’s Design Excellence gala in May 2022, which raised $4,300 even before a specific shelter was identified. Subsequent fundraising efforts continued through 2023 and 2024.

A pivotal contribution came from the The Canadian Delegation of the Dynastic Orders of the Royal House of Savoy, which provided a substantial $20,000 donation. This cash contribution was crucial for repairing the shelter’s range and covering additional materials, ensuring the project could be completed without impacting the shelter’s operating budget.

The renovation included brand-new cabinets, granite countertops, upgraded sinks and faucets, interior cabinet accessories, and a new fridge and freezer. The project also enhanced the kitchen’s lighting and refreshed the space with a new coat of paint, improving the adjacent dining area.

The impact on the residents was profound. While the renovation was underway, residents had to adapt to a temporary kitchen setup. Pierce noted, “We were so shocked at the support and the gratitude that was so obvious from the residents while we were doing the project; it was just really heartwarming. You just really felt that we were making such a positive impact.”

“This project is a testament to the power of collaboration and the generosity of our industry partners,” Pierce continues. “The new kitchen will provide a warm, functional space where the women of Chrysalis House can cook, gather, and rebuild their lives with dignity. We are incredibly proud to have played a role in this transformation.”

“We had such a fantastic experience with Natalia and the NKBA Ottawa Chapter,” Chrysalis House Team Manager Erin Baydak says. “We are a Violence Against Women shelter and like any house, the kitchen is the heart of our home, where so many of the residents and children gather daily. After 20 years of heavy use we desperately needed a new kitchen and Natalia and her team made our dream come true. Everyone who worked on the project was so kind and committed to the project. We really felt valued and respected by the volunteers and donors who made sure all of the materials were of excellent quality and the work professionally done. It was truly transformational. Having a beautiful and welcoming space is so important to us, and this new kitchen is the star of our shelter. We feel such pride and gratitude when we use it.”

As Pierce steps down as Chapter President after four years, this project stands as a crowning achievement for her and the NKBA Ottawa Chapter. “It was kind of a nice thing to leave in our legacy,” she reflected. “I know it left me with just an incredible feeling of gratitude, and to have been able to be part of such an impactful project really meant a lot to me.”

Other key contributors whose generosity was indispensable to the project include:

  • Laurysen Kitchens – Donated all the cabinetry for both the kitchen and lockers.
  • Jeff Picard – Recognized for his exceptional craftsmanship and hours of commitment in installing the entire kitchen renovation.
  • Cosentino – Provided the granite for the countertops.
  • Urban Quarry – Contributed expert craftsmanship and fabrication.
  • Kean Plumbing (K.E.A.N.) – Handled all rough and installation work of the plumbing fixtures, providing significantly discounted services and materials.
  • Distinctive Bath and Kitchens – Supplied high-quality sinks and faucets.
  • Supreme Paint – Provided paint and labor for painting the kitchen and dining room.
  • Lumen – Supplied the pot lights, enabling an upgrade to the kitchen’s lighting.
  • Detail by Design – Provided pendants and interior accessories.
  • Centura Tile – Donated backsplash tile and installation materials.
  • Thompson Electric – Provided invaluable electrical work and gave a huge amount of time, with significantly discounted services and materials.
  • Giuseppe Castrucci (formerly of L in Kitchens), Mariano Ranallo, Domenic Ricci, and Claudio Santini were also key trade partners providing expertise and commitment.

The NKBA Ottawa Chapter remains committed to using design to improve lives and looks forward to future opportunities to give back to the community. For more information about this project or how to support future initiatives, please contact the NKBA Ottawa Chapter at nkbaottawa@gmail.com.

Five Questions With… Kendrick Williams, CKBD

This designer with American Woodmark Corp. is one of just a few elite NKBA members to have earned all nine Specialty Badges.

By Dianne M. Pogoda

“I believe I am called to a life of service,” says Kendrick Williams, CKBD. “I do my best to be my best.”

That service, he says, encompasses teaching and helping others, and making the spaces and lives of his clients beautiful and functional. Whether teaching a young men’s class at his church, teaching Business Management for adult learners at Devry University, or helping elementary school kids with their “Brain Bowl” preparation, he loves to share his time and talent. “I like the person I am when I help others,” he says. “There is no better feeling than helpful service.” So, the Tulsa-OK-based designer with American Woodmark Corp. has amped up his professional development by earning all nine NKBA Specialty Badges — in addition to earning his Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer credential.

Earn a Badge Today — Learn More >

“I really wanted to continue to grow and learn. I want to be considered a resource where others could come and learn about all the different options and facets of kitchen and bath design,” said Williams, asked what inspired him to earn all the badges. “Since there was nothing technically stopping me, I figured I’d challenge myself to see if I could accomplish earning all nine badges — and it feels good to say that I accomplished that goal.”

Williams, who is one of just six NKBA members to earn all nine badges, has been in the design field for more than three decades. He started as a project architect in Orlando, FL, including stints at Jacobs Engineering, Walt Disney Imagineering, and Wyndham Vacation Ownership, working on projects ranging from supermarket, theme park and hotel renovations to managing construction of a parking garage and city government projects. He now works in Design Services for American Woodmark. He is a member of the Baltimore/Washington Chapter, since the company is headquartered in Winchester, VA, even though he works in Tulsa.

He chatted with NKBA about the significance of his accomplishment.

What do you find to be the most important benefit of the badges?

KW: The badges represent recognition of effort and study to continue to grow and learn about what kitchen and bath designers do. I often refer to the study material to help explain a choice or design strategy, or to just refresh my own knowledge. I really love how the NKBA sets its members up for success.

Which was easiest for you, which was most difficult, and why?

KW: Some badges were less challenging — in another life I was a Project Architect and Construction Project Manager — such as Cabinetry, Floor Plans & Specifications, and Remodeling. I enjoyed reviewing what I had previously been taught and how it pertains to K&B design. The more challenging badges (and some of the most fun) were Universal Design, Sustainability, Lighting, Sales & Marketing and especially Color. I absolutely loved exploring how color shapes mood and perception and how to use color to anchor design elements. It was like architecture school all over again. I thoroughly enjoyed the exercise.

Is there one badge that has helped you more than the others?

KW: That depends on the project I am working on at the time. For instance, I was tasked with compiling a PowerPoint presentation on Sustainability and sharing it with my colleagues and supervisors. For multi-unit projects, I have leaned heavily on the teachings on Universal Design to make suggestions on more thoughtful K&B layouts. I have also been able to present new color combinations incorporating different hues and textures into interesting project types, such as apartments, senior living facilities, and large single-family residences for luxury builders.

What did you learn that surprised you about the process?

KW: I was really surprised about how much fun I had learning and studying for the badges. I thought I’d just enjoy the challenge but found myself more in love with all the wonderful and insightful information. It was like I was in overload — but in a good way. Seeing the business of kitchen and bath design embedded in the study material was interesting and inspiring.

Anything else you want us to know about your journey in earning the badges?

KW: With the right amount of planning and patience, anything is possible. I appreciate the NKBA offering discounted pricing to encourage people seeking more educational opportunities; I was able to pursue all nine badges using NKBA’s offers. It served as a good reminder to not allow anything to stop you from achieving something once you set your mind to it.
