Students & Educators

NKBA is proud to recognize the incredible contributions of the kitchen and bath education community during our annual Education Appreciation Week, Sept 22–26. All week long, we’ll be highlighting impactful programs, sharing stories that inspire, and featuring resources that help build the future of our industry.

This is a great opportunity for NKBA chapters to engage with local schools and educators who are shaping the next generation of K&B professionals. To support this effort, NKBA will be providing outreach letter templates for chapters to use when connecting with student and school members, making it easy to extend your chapter’s reach and impact.

Let’s show our appreciation and strengthen the connection between industry and education, together.

We’re closing out Education Appreciation Week with the NKBA Student Design Symposium—a high-energy virtual event designed to inform and inspire. This year’s keynote speaker is Alena Capra, CMKBD, a celebrated designer and KBB Person of the Year. The symposium is scheduled for Friday, September 26, 2025, from 12 PM to 2:30 PM ET. Registration is required.

Visit the Student Design Symposium page for more details and the link to register.

Governance

NKBA will start accepting self-nominations for its national elections on September 2. This is an opportunity to take volunteerism from the local to the national level by serving on the association’s Board of Directors (BOD) or one of its key standing committees.

Open positions include:

  1. Board of Directors (BOD) – Two positions
  2. Chapter Leadership Committee (CLC) – One position
  3. Leadership Recruitment Committee (LRC) – One position
  4. KBIS Exhibitor Committee (KEC) – Four positions

To be considered for the Board of Directors, Chapter Leadership Committee or Leadership Recruitment Committee, candidates must be NKBA members in good standing. To learn more about open national volunteer roles, go here.

Please note that Chapter Leadership Committee (CLC) applicants must be a current chapter officer or have previously served at least one full term as a chapter officer within the last two years. The applicant does not need to maintain officer status, however, to remain in the CLC position.

Additionally, to be eligible for election to the KBIS Exhibitor Committee, applicants must have been an exhibitor at KBIS 2025 and must commit to exhibit at KBIS 2026.

Nominations will close September 30 at 5 PM ET, so be sure to apply!

Since NKBA introduced the Kitchen & Bath Industry Hall of Fame in 1989, the association has honored over 90 outstanding individuals, recognizing their impact and contributions to the growth and integrity of the kitchen and bath industry. Nominations will open on September 8 and will close on October 15 at 5 PM ET.

We encourage you to honor those who have shaped our industry by sharing their stories. Before submitting your nominee for consideration, please read the criteria found on NKBA.org carefully to ensure your nominee meets the Hall of Fame standards. Nominating an outstanding individual requires thoughtful and thorough responses in the application. The Hall of Fame represents the highest level of achievement in our industry, and the review committee will evaluate only the materials provided — no outside research will be conducted, so please take the time to supply your nominee with a stellar submission. We look forward to reviewing your entry for this prestigious honor. Visit https://nkba.org/hall-of-fame-nominations/ for more information.

Government Relations

NKBA actively monitors legislation and public policy developments impacting the kitchen and bath industry, sharing key updates each month through our Government Relations Newsletter.

Hot topics this month include:

U.S. Appliances: Congressman Rick Allen introduced H.R. 4626, also known as the Don’t Mess with My Home Appliances Act, which seeks to prevent the Executive Branch from issuing standards on household appliances that would drive up costs and reduce availability.

U.S. Housing: The Senate Banking Committee advanced bipartisan legislation to boost housing supply by removing regulatory barriers and creating incentives for communities that build more homes.

U.S. – Canadian Lumber Duties: As part of the regularly scheduled review process by the U.S. Commerce Department, countervailing duties on Canadian lumber imports increased from 6.74% to 14.63%.

Canadian Interior Design: The Council for Interior Design Qualification (CIDQ) and the Interior Designers of Canada (IDC) announced the launch of a joint initiative, the Canadian Advocacy Collaborative, which will support the development and promotion of public policy that upholds professional standards.

We hope you benefit from the value these resources bring to you, your profession, and the kitchen & bath industry. Please reach out directly to Steven Campeau, NKBA’s Senior Manager, Global & Government Relations at scampeau@nkba.org, for any specific questions.

Cosentino Opens in Three Cities: Global surfacing giant Cosentino Group has opened three signature Cosentino City showrooms in Dallas, Honolulu, and Richmond, VA. Each represents an investment of more than $1.5 million, and they bring the total number of City showrooms to 12 in the U.S. and 41 worldwide. At 6,200 square feet, the Dallas showroom — the company’s first in Texas — is in the city’s Design District and features an immersive kitchen space, created in collaboration with BauTeam and Miele, for hosting demos and events. The 2,900 square-foot Honolulu showroom in Waterfront Plaza highlights the Hawaiian island lifestyle with monthly “pau hana” gatherings, while the 4,490 square-foot Richmond showroom in the historic Scott’s Addition District is also the first in that region. KBB has the story.

KBCanada Registration Opens: Exclusive early registration for NKBA members is now open for Kitchen + Bath Canada Expo, Canada’s only trade show dedicated to kitchen and bath. KBC Expo will take place Nov. 5 and 6 at the Toronto Congress Centre, 650 Dixon Road in Toronto. General registration opens Sept. 16. Industry News

Don’t Count Boomers Out Yet: Millennial home buyers have made quite a splash in recent years, and in 2025, are making up 29 percent of home buyers. This group, ages 26 to 44, previously led all home purchasing. But this year, Baby Boomers, ages 60 to 78, reclaimed the top spot, accounting for about 42 percent of buyers, according to the 2025 Home Buyers and Sellers Generational Trends Report issued by the National Association of Realtors. Boomers, who are in or entering their retirement years, tend to downsize or move closer to friends and family. They also make up the largest share of sellers at 53 percent. Older home buyers present a significant opportunity for aging-in-place and universal design. See the full report here.

Five Questions With… Stacy McCarthy

By Nicholas Tamarin

Stacy McCarthy, CMKBD, is a true visionary in the design world. The President of Stacy McCarthy Design, and the South Florida Chapter President for NKBA | KBIS, McCarthy is particularly passionate about trauma-informed design and helping families navigate life’s toughest transitions.

Her expertise spans luxury residential remodels to disaster restoration, and McCarthy is a highly sought-after speaker for the NKBA’s Chapter Presentation Program, where she offers the following topics: “Design Competition Ready: Best Practices for Design Competition Confidence,” “Lead the Way: How Chapter Leadership Fuels Designer Income,” “Emergency Design: Guiding Clients After Fire, Flood and Life’s Chaos,” and “Fearless Kitchens: Bold Design with Practical Function.”

With dual degrees in architectural drafting and art history, she brings over 25 years of experience across showrooms, multi-family housing, and national brand consulting. Formerly from California and now based in South Florida, McCarthy is also a CEU author, mother of five, passionate runner, and art lover. We asked her how she gets it all done.

Could you tell us about your career background?

I’ve spent more than 25 years immersed in the world of design and architecture, spanning everything from luxury residential remodels, multi-family project management, institutional buildings, and restaurants to showroom design, national brand consulting, and disaster restoration. I launched my firm, Stacy McCarthy Design, in 2002, to focus on conceptual planning, and have more recently directed my design towards trauma-informed renovation services for homeowners and professionals across the country. My career path has been anything but linear, but each step has been rooted in creating spaces that truly serve people, especially those navigating major life changes after disaster through Emergency Designer.

Today, I split my time between private clients, mentoring other designers, and contributing to industry leadership through roles like my current position as NKBA South Florida Chapter President, and many speaking engagements.

How about educationally?

Since I always knew I would follow my dream in architecture, I had a great opportunity to take four years of high school architectural drafting at Roseville High School in California, where I lived most of my life. I earned dual associate degrees in Architectural Drafting and Art History, which gave me a solid foundation in both the technical and cultural aspects of design.

I interned for several architects, whose blend of structure and storytelling still influences my approach today. Every detail matters, and every room has a narrative. I’m also a Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designer, Certified Interior Designer, CEU author, accredited CEU provider, and former certified mold remediator. I modeled my belief in lifelong learning for my kids, who are always stalking me—haha—which has resulted in evolving my career and expanding my knowledge, especially in areas that intersect design with wellness, construction, and emotional recovery.

How did you get into kitchen and bath design specifically?

Design found me early. I think very spatially, and I was fortunate that my parents admired my eagerness to draw floor plans at the age of 4. This was when I was instructed to draw a house, even though the teacher really meant a box, triangle, door, and window. My family also traveled a lot, and my dad showed me how to read maps around the time I began to read. I rearranged rooms (sorry, mom) and sketched homes for fun, but it wasn’t until I began working for architectural firms that I realized how much I was drawn to human-scaled spaces.

The last architect I worked for wanted to “jump on” the kitchen and bath trend, which I was very hesitant to do. The firm became an active member of NKBA, and then one of our cabinet reps, Jim Gurulè, from the Northern California Chapter, encouraged me to apply for my CKD. My experience in disaster restoration deepened that focus, as I saw firsthand how rebuilding a kitchen or bath after a traumatic event is more than just restoring a home; it can be a critical step in someone’s healing journey. That intersection of emotional support and strategic design continues to drive my work today.

Why did you get into the NKBA, and how has it benefited your career?

I joined the NKBA in 1996 through the aforementioned architectural firm. As I started attending events and meetings, I began looking for deeper connections in the kitchen and bath world… and I found so much more. The education, the camaraderie, and the leadership opportunities truly shaped my career. I soon became a member, on my own, for my design firm.

Since then, I’ve served in nearly every chapter role and currently have the honor of leading the South Florida Chapter as President. Some of my best friends and fondest memories are associated with NKBA. NKBA has not only helped me grow as a dedicated professional but also allowed me to give back through mentoring, CEU development, and regional and national judging. It’s a community that celebrates both innovation and integrity, and I’m grateful to be part of it.

What’s next for you, and what do you see as next for the industry?

I’m passionate about continuing to elevate the conversation around trauma-informed design and helping families reimagine their homes after difficult transitions. I also see the kitchen and bath industry increasingly embracing more holistic solutions, ones that integrate emotional well-being, accessibility, and environmental responsibility. I joke around about being at the highest level with CMKBD and nowhere to go, but in reality, I am only beginning my next vision.

Personally, I’m expanding my presence at national events like High Point Market, WestEdge, DesignEdge, and other events where I’ve recently been invited to participate in conversations that bridge interior design, product development, and client advocacy after tragedy. It’s an exciting time to be in this field, and I look forward to helping shape its future through purpose, service, and innovation.

The Impact of Tariffs on K&B Companies and Consumers is Starting to Come into Focus

BY NKBA Editorial Staff

As federal tariff and trade policies take their final form, their impact on kitchen and bath companies—and on consumers—is becoming clearer.

A recent analysis from Goldman Sachs asserts that U.S. businesses have, to this point, shouldered most of the financial impact from tariffs, but this may change soon. The report projects that consumers will have to absorb a larger share of tariff costs, as U.S. businesses and foreign exporters can no longer shoulder the majority of these expenses.

Here are some additional insights into the expected impacts of tariffs from the NKBA / John Burns Q2 2025 Kitchen & Bath Market Index (KBMI) Report and the mid-year update to the 2025 Market Outlook:

K&B Industry Expects Tariffs to Restrict Growth

When asked what factors they expect to restrict growth in the short term, more than half (52%) of K&B industry pros surveyed as part of the Q2 2025 KBMI said that tariffs will constrain revenue growth over the next six months.

Several firms noted that higher prices from tariffs likely won’t reach consumers until 2026.

Tariffs are impacting margins

Margins were down in Q2 2025, likely influenced  in part by increased tariffs. A quarter of surveyed K&B professionals said gross margins were down year-over-year, up five percent from Q1 2025. Design (29%) and manufacturing  (27%) firms reported lower gross margins YOY, reflecting elevated margin pressure in those sectors relative to the broader K&B industry.

More than half of manufacturing segment firms providing tile, appliances, faucets, and hardware reported experiencing margin pressure and plans to either partially or fully pass along price increases.

“Path of Uncertainty”

In the Kitchen & Bath Midyear Update on August 7, Nishu Sood, Principal of Research at JBREC, shared an updated macroeconomic forecast for 2025, analyzing policy shifts and their implications for the kitchen and bath industry.

Sood noted that the economy has held up better than expected over the first half of the year, yet uncertainty around tariffs appears to be weighing on economic growth, including a notable downshift on hiring. While inflation has fallen, it is still not at the level the Federal Reserve would like to see and consumers remain concerned about elevated prices.

While there has been a general sense that tariffs have not had much of an impact thus far, Sood says the situation is far from resolved. It will take some time – likely later this year or into early next year – to see the true effects of the historically high tariff rates that were recently announced.

“We have been waiting to see how across-the-board tariff increases would impact our industry, and we are finally seeing early indicators of how this may play out,” said Bill Darcy, Global President & CEO of NKBA | KBIS. “This information should inform the adjustments K&B professionals across sectors are planning as they look to adapt to changing economic realities.”

NKBA Announces New, Dedicated Presence at High Point Market – Will Debut This Fall

The NKBA’s new design hub—adjacent to Cosentino’s newly established space, both in Broad Hall—features brand partners Kichler Lighting, James Martin Vanities, Ferguson Home, Sherwin-Williams, Fabuwood, BlueStar, Signature Hardware, Miele, Urban Bonfire, FreePower, and more.

BETHLEHEM, Pa., August 18, 2025 –The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA | KBIS), the world’s leading trade association for the kitchen and bath industry representing nearly 55,000 kitchen and bath industry professionals, will debut a new, dedicated presence at High Point Market. Located on the first floor of historic Broad Hall—and extending to a connected outdoor space—NKBA’s new design hub brings together prominent bath, appliance, lighting, and indoor/outdoor kitchen brands in full-scale vignettes. On the heels of announcing a strategic alliance partnership with High Point Market Authority, a physical presence at the show cements the partnership and NKBA’s role as an advocate and liaison for the kitchen and bath industry.

“The new NKBA space at High Point Market embodies the evolution of kitchen and bath into whole-home design,” said Bill Darcy, global president & CEO of NKBA | KBIS. “It’s a dynamic destination for discovering the latest trends—across furnishings, surfaces, appliances, and more—and understanding how the convergence of these elements is shaping a more connected and powerful design industry. As part of our strategic partnership with the High Point Market Authority, we’re proud to bring this broader story to life in a space as fittingly named as Broad Hall.”

The opportunity for a long-term presence at High Point Market was first presented to NKBA by Cosentino, which secured a multi-year investment in Broad Hall. In tandem with the launch of NKBA’s space, Cosentino will debut its own dedicated showroom experience in Broad Hall, with the goal to expand its reach to the design community at High Point and showcase the diversity of its products beyond countertops.

As Market attendees explore the space, participating brand partners including Kichler Lighting, James Martin Vanities, Ferguson Home, Sherwin-Williams, Fabuwood, BlueStar, Signature Hardware, Miele,  FreePower, and more, will showcase their best-in-class products to inspire designs for the whole home. The NKBA footprint also expands outdoors, where a Dekton floor is adorned with Feeney railings, an Azenco pergola, and an Urban Bonfire outdoor kitchen, which will be used to host panels and programming throughout Market.

All brand spaces were designed by Kerrie Kelly, NKBA board member and CEO & creative director of Kerrie Kelly Studio, who created an immersive experience that celebrates the intersection of luxury kitchen and bath design with craftsmanship and innovation. “Designing Broad Hall was an opportunity to honor High Point’s rich history while reflecting NKBA’s forward-looking commitment to whole-home innovation,” said Kelly. “Through layered materials, curated brand collaborations and immersive storytelling, the space invites designers to explore what’s next in luxury design — beyond the kitchen and bath.”

NKBA also worked in partnership with Broad Hall owner Codarus, which provided additional inspiration and guidance in the development of this collaborative space.

From October 25 – 28, between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily, and October 29, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., NKBA and the brand partners will present a variety of curated programming and events, including a ribbon-cutting celebration, designer panels, and other exciting activations.

Five Questions With… Sharon J. Washington

The founder of Eclexis Design, Sharon J. Washington is the highly anticipated host of the virtual NKBA Student Design Symposium Fall 2025, “Uncharted: Students. Designers. Trailblazers,” on September 26. Washington is a long-time champion of the SDS and her enthusiasm for the career development event is infectious. She has a PhD in education from The Ohio State University and brings a wealth of experience from nearly four decades in higher education and non-profit leadership, along with a passion for interior design, particularly in the kitchen and bath industry.

Throughout her career Washington has engaged in work that contributes to a greater understanding of individuals and groups, and ways to foster greater equity and inclusion. In 2014, after leaving a non-profit where she had been the executive director for six years, Washington actively pursued her interest in interior design, eventually realizing that her interests lay in helping others to find the nexus between function and beauty. We’re excited to learn more about her journey and insights into the upcoming symposium.

Could you tell us about your background and how your career shifted to interior design?

My career shift to interior design was more of a return to an early interest in dreaming about and drawing floor plans. In high school, my design interests were focused on creating the perfect house plan with a ceramic studio. During my time in agriculture school, I drafted barn layouts for greater efficiency in feeding and mucking. My interests shifted again when working with faculty to conceptualize future needs in academic facility planning.

How did you first get involved with the NKBA, and how has being a member benefited you professionally?

I joined the NKBA in 2015, becoming an active member in the Northern California Chapter. In 2019, I earned my CKBD certification. It has made it much easier to network with other design professionals locally and nationally, and provided access to resources that were very helpful as a new professional.

The Student Design Symposium has a rich history, could you give us some background on it please?

The Student Design Symposium has its roots in the Student Career Forum, an event that has been held nearly every year in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1966. The event was held from 1989 to 2013 at the  San Francisco Design Center, hosted by Clarellen Adams and produced through a collaborative effort of the local professional chapters of the leading design associations. Beginning in 2014, SDS has been hosted by the Northern California NKBA Chapter in cooperation with the local college design programs, and since 2020 the student symposium has been an interactive and engaging virtual conference.

How has the symposium evolved into its current iteration?

In Spring 2024 and 2025, the Northern California NKBA Chapter was thrilled and honored to host SDS with the national office for students across the network. It now features a keynote speaker and concurrent sessions from leading professionals from across the U.S. and Canada in the field of design.

For students considering participating in the NKBA Student Design Symposium, what are the key benefits and takeaways they can expect from attending this event?

It’s fun and interactive! There are Informative sessions from designers, suppliers and contractors designed for future and new professionals. And, of course, the opportunity to network with others from across the NKBA network. And let’s not forget the door prizes!

NKBA | KBIS Specialty Badges: A Package of Prestige

Six NKBA members have earned all nine Specialty Badges, enhancing their industry knowledge and business reputations.

By Dianne M. Pogoda

Show what you know!

Communication is a powerful tool kitchen and bath professionals can use to build their businesses, increase clientele, and enhance their careers. NKBA Specialty Badges are an ideal way for industry pros to showcase their knowledge, expertise, and professional execution in various K&B-related disciplines. The program, which launched with five specialties at KBIS 2019, has grown to become a leading industry medallion and testament to expertise in nine specific areas.

While NKBA certification has long been recognized across the K&B world as a standard of design excellence, it is available exclusively to the designer community. Designers earn their Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer (CKBD) credential and may level up to Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designer (CMKBD).

Purchase Your NKBA Specialty Badges Here >

The badges were developed by NKBA and subject matter experts as a micro-credentialing program for all categories of membership — designers as well as remodelers, retailers, distributors, manufacturers, sales and marketing professionals, consultants and any other industry-related pro. The badges provide personalized learning and allow NKBA members to gain specific knowledge of a particular trade or skill.

Currently, the nine NKBA Specialty Badges include Floor Plans & Specifications, Lighting, Cabinetry, Sales & Marketing, Sustainability, Remodeling, Universal Design, Color, and Appliances. The first Specialty Badge costs $199 with subsequent Badges available for $149 each. Badge packages include all study materials and testing, and NKBA periodically offers special promotions for additional member discounts. For more information about the badges, visit NKBA.org/badges.

Just six NKBA members have earned all nine Specialty Badges. They concur that preparing for the badges deepened their understanding and broadened their areas of expertise. Here, they discuss what inspired them on their journey and what the credentials have meant to their careers.

Derick Vaden
Vice President / Lead Designer
Company: CTS&I Inc., Roanoke, Virginia
NKBA Chapter: Virginia State Chapter

“While I hold a BS in design and a master’s in marketing, neither of those degrees were a path to gaining certification through the NKBA in the kitchen and bath field.  With over 20 years of experience in the residential luxury custom home sector, my greatest strength is knowledge. By obtaining all nine badges, I hope to broaden the depth of knowledge I have in the field and be able to offer the best solutions for my clients. Earning all the badges was a way to gain valuable knowledge in the industry and to gain some insight into areas that I may have not been very familiar with.”

Megan Kyper
Kitchen & Bath Designer
Company: The Home Depot, Johnstown, PA
NKBA Chapter: Pittsburgh Tri State

“Our industry changes constantly. I had heard of the NKBA back in college, but didn’t fully explore what they were about. Once I started at The Home Depot, one of my training courses mentioned the NKBA and the badge program, so I looked into it. It seemed like a great step in refreshing my mind on some industry topics. It’s great that you can do them on your own time and expand your knowledge for a fraction of the cost of college courses. And if you’re looking to take the CKBD exam but have been out of studying and coursework for a while, what better way to use the badge program than as a steppingstone?”

Danielle Schroeder
Sales & Marketing
Company: Chief Architect, Coeur d’Alene, ID
NKBA Chapter: Palouse Chapter

“The badges have allowed me to take my NKBA membership to the next level, enhanced my credibility and I can demonstrate my expertise to customers and colleagues. Knowledge and skills are not static but evolve over time. The Specialty Badge program has allowed me to stay curious, seek out new information and adapt to changes within the kitchen and bath industry. Additional education is essential for staying relevant. It ensures that I am up to date with the latest trends, technologies and best practices, enabling me to effectively meet the demands of my profession.”

Kendrick Williams, CKBD
Designer, Design Services
Company: American Woodmark Corp., Winchester, VA (corporate headquarters; remote from Tulsa, OK).
NKBA Chapter: Baltimore/Washington Chapter

“The badges represent recognition of effort and study to continue to grow and learn about what K&B designers do. I often refer to the study material to help explain a choice or design strategy, or to just refresh my own knowledge. I want to be considered a resource where others could come and learn about all the different options and facets of kitchen and bath design, and I really love how the NKBA sets its members up for success. I was surprised about how much fun I had learning and studying for the badges. Seeing the business of kitchen and bath design embedded in the study material was interesting and inspiring.”

Tyler Williams
Kitchen Designer
Company: The Home Depot, Provo, UT
NKBA Chapter: Mountain States

“I wanted to earn all the badges to expand my knowledge, to be more versatile, and to create more developed and thorough projects. The most important benefit is being able to sell a more complete project by having a clearer understanding of the individual components of a kitchen and how they coincide. This not only benefits me but also each of my clients. A kitchen is an intricate puzzle with several components, and even the smallest one can make a huge difference. It’s amazing what you can see when your eyes are opened to more considerations and the potential transformation.”

Stephen Horan
Manager
Company: Jonathan Arnold Inc., Oceanside, NY
NKBA Chapter: NY Metro

“It was a very satisfying experience and I’m glad I did it — it’s a personal quest. The easiest badge for me to earn was Floorplans & Specifications, because my background is in drafting.  The most difficult was Sales & Marketing, as I have no experience in this area and it was all very new to me but also very interesting. The Appliance Specialist badge has helped me to understand all the latest advances in appliances and their applications, in particular, induction cooktops and speed ovens. If you follow the process, study the NKBA Knowledge Base materials, and you are confident in your abilities, you will successfully complete the badge.”

Spotlight on Surfacing & Safety: What the Latest Verdict Means for the Industry

Within the surfacing industry, silicosis, an occupational disease that stems from consistent and continuous exposure to silica dust over a prolonged period of time (years), is a critical topic driving an industry-wide response. Silica-based products, such as quartz, granite, slate, sandstone, and other building materials, release silica dust when cut, ground, or polished. The uptick in conversation stems from the rise of silicosis court cases across California. However, in May, a jury in Torrance, CA ruled that silica-based countertops are safe and attributed silicosis to improper handling of the material within the workplace. This ruling is notable, as it reinforces that it is possible to safely work with silica-containing products when proper safety measures are implemented within the workplace.

Clear Standards for Fabricators

To ensure fabricators are enforcing safety measures in the workplace, the Natural Stone Institute (NSI) is leading an industry-wide effort to require fabrication shops to adhere to strict safety and health measures outlined by OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. These clear standards for fabricators protect employees from silica dust exposure. They include: proper employee training, wet working methods (not dry-cutting), local exhaust ventilation and extraction systems, air quality measurement and filtration systems, proper housekeeping, the use of personal protection equipment (including, as necessary, respirators), and medical surveillance programs.

NSI’s CEO Jim Hieb added, “When the new OSHA standard became enforceable with much lower exposure levels for silica, the NSI created a Silica & Slab Safety Certificate training program to help industry workers and business owners better understand the ‘how’ to determine their risks and best practices to keep workers safe. I urge all NKBA members to utilize fabricators who have completed the safety certificate and/or achieved the coveted NSI-accredited fabricator credential. You (the kitchen & bath community) play a vital role in advocating for employee safety.”

Manufacturer-Led Awareness, Education & Product Innovation

Additionally, stone manufacturers have robust programs in place to support education about the safe handling of surfacing products. For example, brands use proven practices such as labeling and warnings on the product, in promotional materials, and product safety data sheets with information on silica content, risks, and safety and health measures. They also offer good practice guides and dedicated programs for online learning, seminars, and websites for fabricators, focusing on health and safety, machinery maintenance, and creating a safe work environment.

Several surfacing manufacturers have also developed low and zero-silica collections. These introductions stem from years of research and development to create products that help fabricators control silica dust exposure at their workplaces. However, the proper PPE is still required with these products.

Legislation Paving the Way for Change

Specifically in California, stone manufacturers have also taken steps to support legislation aimed at implementing a certification program to ensure fabricators of stone products comply with health and safety regulations that protect workers from exposure to silica dust. In 2023, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors approved the “Silicosis Prevention Education” motion, which invested $500,000 in intervention outreach and education through the nonprofits Pacoima Beautiful and the Institute of Popular Education of Southern California (IDEPSCA). In 2024, stone manufacturers collaborated with California public health and occupational safety officials on a permanent standard through Cal/OSHA that improves worker safety education, training, and awareness and facilitates the enforcement of OSHA regulations.

Another significant milestone in December 2024 was the introduction of legislative bill SB-20 by Senator Caroline Menjivar, which takes a proactive, solutions-oriented approach by requiring mandatory wet fabrication, required certification, and training, and a structured regulatory and enforcement framework. SB-20 could help ensure that slabs are only supplied to certified fabrication shops, closing a loophole that has allowed unregulated and unsafe operations to persist. This is a vital step in holding all players—from designers and suppliers to shop owners—to the same high standards. As of June 2025, SB-20 has passed the Senate and has now been received in the CA Assembly, where it currently awaits committee assignment and review.
