K&B Industry Growth Remains Flat Amid Continued Consumer Uncertainty, According to Q2 2025 KBMI Report

Firms express greater optimism for 2026 — if economic stability and lower interest rates take hold

By NKBA Editorial Staff

The kitchen and bath industry remained in a period of muted growth last quarter – industry sales were essentially flat year-over-year — as consumers generally remain risk-averse in an environment of continued economic uncertainty. According to the NKBA / John Burns Q2 2025 Kitchen & Bath Market Index (KBMI) report, many consumers engaged in pre-buying due to expected tariff-related price increases, while other homeowners postponed projects due to questions about where the economy is headed.

The KBMI rated 53.2 out of 100 in Q2 2025, down from 55.1 in Q1 2025, reflecting slower current sales and lower expectations of near-term sales and industry health. Overall, the index indicates that the K&B industry is continuing to experience modestly expanding activity tempered by ongoing consumer uncertainty.

One key takeaway from the latest survey of 575 NKBA members across the design, building and remodeling, retail sales, and manufacturing segments is that remodeling is again expected to outperform new construction for K&B firms — not just in 2025, but through 2026.

Many kitchen and bath firms expressed confidence in a return to a growth trajectory next year, pending overall economic stability and lower interest rates. The biggest risk factor to this hopeful outlook is continued uncertainty around the impact of tariff policy.

Some additional key takeaways from the 2Q25 KBMI report:

Design and Retail Sectors Downgrade Ratings

The overall decrease in the KBMI can largely be attributed to downgrades by surveyed design (-5.8) and retail (-5.5) pros. These were the two industry areas that cited Q2 2025 decreases in the Current K&B Activity Index, which rates current quarter residential kitchen and bath sales compared to a year ago (Q2 2024). While, overall, kitchen and bath professionals expect sales conditions to improve over the next three months, their optimism has been tempered somewhat from the prior quarter, especially in the retail sales and manufacturing segments.

Consumers Staying Put, Modestly Remodeling

While design firm sales, impacted by a contraction in new home sales, hit a new post-Covid low (-5% YOY), Q2 2025 building and remodeling sales were up 3% YOY, signaling a stable, but slowly recovering demand for remodeling. More consumers are staying in their existing homes; middle-income consumers, in particular, are pursuing generally more modest renovations and budget “refreshes.”

Risk from Rising Input Costs

K&B firms report average price inflation of +4.6% YOY, in line with average input cost growth in Q2 2025. Many firms – including more than half of manufacturing segment firms providing tile, appliances, faucets, and cabinets — say they are struggling to pass on costs and are feeling the squeeze on their margins. Several noted that higher pricing from tariffs won’t actually hit consumers until next year, which could dampen their outlook.

Brand Names Still Matter

For the first time, K&B firms were asked to share insights into the importance of branding for their clients. More than half said that brands are very important (41%) or extremely important (11%) to customers, likely attributable to greater social media and internet-driven brand awareness among consumers. Nearly a third (30%) reported that brand names have become more important to their clients this year.

“Our industry is not experiencing the significant growth we expected,” but it’s holding remarkably steady as we wait for key economic policy decisions to play out,” said Bill Darcy, Global President & CEO of NKBA | KBIS. “Tariffs, in particular, continue to be a major X-factor – the impacts of those policies, and how they will ultimately affect costs and consumer behavior, have not likely been fully felt.”

Five Questions With… Tyler Williams

The kitchen designer, one of just a few NKBA members to have earned all nine Specialty Badges, has consistently amplified his skills over the course of his career, despite a few bumps in the road.

By Dianne M. Pogoda

The challenges that life presents often lead to our biggest opportunities. Tyler Williams, a kitchen designer with The Home Depot in Provo, UT, identified his passion for design at age nine, while helping his mom — herself an amateur, self-taught designer — with a DIY kitchen renovation. Fueling his dreams of interior design and architecture, he consumed as much from the design world as possible. He took classes in drafting and multi-media throughout middle school and high school, attended show houses with his family, studied floor plans in magazines and sketched his own plans relentlessly, amassing more than 150 designs by the time he was a sophomore.

“My mom has always been my biggest advocate and has always inspired me to do my best,” he recalled. “She was the one that sparked my initial interest in the design world at a young age when we remodeled our own kitchen.”

But he had a few setbacks with health, the sudden loss of a family member, and was unable to finish college. He found himself off-track, but happily working at Walmart, learning how to deal with the public — and then COVID-19 hit. Ultimately, he took a part-time job at The Home Depot, where an astute HR manager listened to his story, identified his talent and passion, and placed him in a training program to become a kitchen designer.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I was doing something I was passionate about and loving my job! Full circle, I was finally where I belonged from the beginning. The Home Depot’s partnership with the NKBA has been the key to my ability to have these opportunities,” he said. “This is an employer that has believed in me from day one and continues to do so.”

He recently celebrated his fourth year designing for The Home Depot, which participates in an NKBA badge-sponsorship program, and has surpassed $1 million in sales for each fiscal year. He has earned multiple Specialist of the Month recognitions at his store and was a five-time Specialist of the District honoree. In addition, Williams received the Designer Excellence Award from American Woodmark in 2023 and 2024. After completing his ninth badge in April, Williams is aiming for CKBD certification.

“No matter how many times I feel reduced to ashes,” he said, “I always find a way to rebuild and improve even more.”

Williams, a member of NKBA’s Mountain States Chapter, discussed his inspiration and pathway to earning all nine badges and how that has helped him grow in his career.

NKBA: What inspired you to earn all 9 badges?

TW: My mom, my customers, my friends and family, my coworkers, my workplace, my education, and my personal drive to increase my worth and always do my best have contributed to my inspiration. Why wouldn’t I want to be more specialized in kitchen/bath design to further assist my customers? The benefits are endless as the badges only allow me to design even better projects.

NKBA: What do you find to be the most important benefit of the badges?

TW:  Being able to sell a more complete project by having a clearer understanding of the individual components of a kitchen and how they coincide. This not only benefits me but also each of my clients.

NKBA: Which was easiest for you, which was hardest for you, and why?

TW:  Cabinetry, Floorplans & Specifications, Appliances, and Color were easiest for me as I was most familiar with those subjects. Remodeling was probably the hardest because of the length and breadth of the material. I was originally intimidated by Sales & Marketing, Sustainability, and Universal Design but as I dove into the material, I realized that I knew more than I expected. Each badge contained information that I didn’t know before, and I found value in all nine.

NKBA: Is there one badge that has helped you more than the others?

TW:  Color really built on my previous knowledge from Interior Design courses I took in college and has only helped my confidence in reassuring customers with their color choices, and helping them with paint colors for their walls, tile selections, as well as the more obvious cabinet pairings for multi-toned projects. Lighting has also been advantageous in recommending new light fixtures.

NKBA: What did you learn that surprised you about the process?

TW: How much I already knew, and how much more can be learned in the world of kitchen and bath.

While NKBA certification has long been recognized across the K&B world as a standard of design excellence, it is available exclusively to the designer community. Designers earn their Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer (CKBD) credential and may level up to Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designer (CMKBD).

The badges were developed by NKBA and subject matter experts as a micro-credentialing program for all categories of membership — designers as well as remodelers, retailers, distributors, manufacturers, sales and marketing professionals, consultants and any other industry-related pro. The badges provide personalized learning and allow NKBA members to gain specific knowledge of a particular trade or skill.Currently, the nine NKBA Specialty Badges include Floor Plans & Specifications, Lighting, Cabinetry, Sales & Marketing, Sustainability, Remodeling, Universal Design, Color, and Appliances. The first Specialty Badge costs $199 with subsequent Badges available for $149 each. Badge packages include all study materials and testing, and NKBA periodically offers special promotions for additional member discounts. For more information about the badges, visit NKBA.org/badges.

Miele’s Bold Outreach: Premium German appliance brand Miele launched a provocative creative campaign expressly for the North American market in June. The campaign, “Rumored for a Reason,” is running on video, print, digital, and social media platforms and is evocative of European cinema. Acclaimed director Janicza Bravo (“Zola,” “Gregory Go Boom,” “The Bear”) filmed the suite of cinematic spots highlighting Miele’s innovative engineering and longevity, with “gossipy” statements like “Miele outlasts most marriages” or “increases property value.” The goal was to introduce the brand to a wider North American consumer base while leveraging its inherent European mystique, according to Thorsten Brandt, SVP and Global Head of Brand & Customer Experience at Miele. “Our ‘Rumored for a Reason’ campaign fuels this mystique by transforming the extraordinary truths behind Miele’s heritage and quality into irresistible, gossip-worthy rumors,” he said. “With Miele’s signature style and dry wit, the integrated campaign playfully taps into our legacy — turning global admiration into intrigue as we grow our presence in North America.”  Learn more here.

Five Questions With… Eric Dillman

The Pittsburgh Tri State Chapter President is also a burgeoning podcast host.

By Nicholas Tamarin

NKBA | KBIS Pittsburgh Tri State Chapter President Eric Dillman is an interior design professional with a strong foundation in both design and sales within the kitchen and bath industry. The host of The Pro Series with Eric Dillman podcast graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Design from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and began his career as a kitchen and bath designer for a home renovation company in Pittsburgh. He later accepted a role at the corporate headquarters of a major national retail brand, where he was responsible for creating construction documents for new stores and remodels across the country—all while continuing part-time with his original kitchen and bath firm.

After three years, Eric returned to his passion for kitchen-focused design by joining a local countertop fabricator as an account manager. In 2023, he was recruited by Triax Marketing and Sales to serve as Territory Manager, covering Western Pennsylvania and Columbus, Ohio. In this role, he represents 11 leading manufacturers, including Blum, Rev-A-Shelf, Omega National Products, Tresco Lighting, Amerock, Element Designs, Northern Contours, Valley Custom Doors, Tenn-Tex, Deerwood, and Doellken. We asked him how it all happened.

What’s your background?

From as early as I can remember, I was fascinated by design and architecture. When I was 8 years old, my parents built a house, and I was completely captivated by the entire process—picking out finishes, visiting the job site, and watching everything come together. I used to sit in our living room drawing the homes being built in the neighborhood and designing houses out of LEGOs. At that point, I was convinced I wanted to be an architect.

How did you get into design? And how did you get into kitchen and bath design specifically?

When it came time to choose a college path, I toured an architecture program and had the opportunity to speak with a student who helped me realize that interior design was actually a better fit for where my passion truly was. I went on to study Interior Design at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where I especially fell in love with residential design—particularly kitchen and bath.

I was fortunate enough to have my very first boss hire me right out of my senior portfolio show. That role launched my career in kitchen and bath design, and I’ve remained connected to the industry in some capacity ever since.

How and why did you get into the NKBA and how has it benefitted your career?

I first got involved with the NKBA in 2022 while working for a countertop fabricator. My employer encouraged me to attend the local chapter’s Design Awards event as a way to start networking within the industry. That one event really opened my eyes to the value of the NKBA community, and since then, I’ve hardly missed a single chapter gathering.

Not long after that first event, the Membership Chair invited me to join a committee helping plan a student-focused event, and from there, things progressed quickly. I went from serving on that committee to stepping into the role of Communications Chair, and I now serve as President of our local chapter.

Being part of the NKBA has been incredibly beneficial for my career. It’s given me access to a strong network of professionals, educational resources, and leadership opportunities that have helped me grow personally and professionally. It’s also given me a platform to give back to the industry that I’ve built my career in.

What’s next for you and what do you see as next for the industry?

I’ll be continuing to grow my territory with Triax Marketing and Sales and be the best possible face for the manufacturers I represent. Building strong client relationships, staying on top of product innovations, and representing our brands with professionalism and energy is something I’m deeply committed to.

Another area I’m passionate about is growing my podcast, The Pro Series with Eric Dillman. It’s been one of the most rewarding parts of my career. I record and edit every episode myself during evenings and weekends, and what started as a side project has turned into one of the best professional tools and hobbies I could have asked for. It’s not only helped me network and build stronger relationships for my full-time role at Triax, but it’s also given my clients and industry peers a unique outlet to showcase themselves—often in ways they’ve never done before.

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to interview some amazing leaders in our field like Massimo Ballucchi, Summer Kath, Tamara Day, Ward Schraeder, Paul Grothouse, and many others. The podcast has now surpassed 125,000 downloads, with nearly 200 episodes released—one every week, plus a fun bonus episode on the weekends. I truly believe in the power of storytelling in our industry, and the podcast has become a platform that connects and elevates voices from every corner of design and construction.

Looking ahead, I think the future of our industry lies in visibility and connection. Designers and brands who lean into social media, personal branding, and authentic storytelling will be the ones who stand out. The more we create space to share our work, our stories, and our expertise, the more we elevate the industry as a whole.

NKBA | KBIS Visits the InstallerSHOW in Birmingham, England

The U.K. Called and Global Connect Came.

By Nicholas Tamarin

The InstallerSHOW 2025, the UK’s largest event for heat, water, air, and energy professionals, welcomed the NKBA | KBIS  Global Connect team from June 24 to 26 at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, U.K. Joining the team to meet with exhibitors, visitors, and media representatives were Global Connect Advisor LuAnn Nigara, a design business coach and speaker, Global Connect Advisor Eric Marshall, a custom closet expert, and Veronika Miller, lead consultant for Global Connect.

This year’s event was a landmark, bringing together 800 exhibitors, over 30,000 installers, specifiers, and decision-makers, and more than 95,000 visitor scans. It served as a premier platform for discovering new products, networking, connecting with manufacturers, and staying updated on industry trends.

Day 1 began with Noëlle C. Lavery, Director of Member Relations, Domestic & Global Brands, and Steven Campeau, Senior Manager, Global and Government Relations, walking the show floor with Global Connect Advisor Eric Marshall to meet with the more than 20 NKBA members and conduct micro-interviews at each stop. Day 2 proved dynamic. The NKBA team attended a significant reveal by Strategic Alliance Partner BMA, announcing their rebrand to the Bathroom Association. They also witnessed “Pitchfest,” a fast-paced version of KBIS’s spotlight sponsorships, where five companies presented their products to an engaged audience. Global Connect Advisor LuAnn Nigara participated in a panel discussion led by the Bathroom Association, followed by Nigara conducting interviews with various companies on the show floor. Meanwhile, Lavery and Marshall took an unexpected offsite factory tour of Lamtek near Sherwood Forest.

Global Connect Advisor LuAnn Nigara participated in a panel discussion led by the Bathroom Association.

A key highlight of the visit was the NKBA-hosted North American Kitchen and Bath Design Business Breakfast on Thursday, June 26. It was held at the HAUS, an innovative activation on the show floor that showcased the stages of home construction, with NKBA members like Senstec, Titus, and BLANCO in attendance. During the breakfast, the NKBA presented the latest North American economic data, U.S. design business trends, and a preview of KBIS 2026, followed by a Q&A session. The NKBA team also visited numerous NKBA members exhibiting at the show, including Hidealoo, Häfele, Titus, Grohe, Hansgrohe, Fluidmaster, Gerberite, Grant Westfield, Sensio, Blanco, Senstec, and Croydex.

“We were excited to attend the InstallerSHOW this year and walk the show floor to meet NKBA members exhibiting as well as meet with potential new Global Connect members,” Campeau said. “This program serves as a platform to build partnerships with trade groups and associations such as the Bathroom Association and the British Institute of Kitchen, Bedroom & Bathroom Installation, as well as assist companies to understand the $235 billion residential kitchen and bath North American market. We look forward to continuing making these important connections for the betterment and growth of the international K&B industry.”

Five Questions With… Kendrick Williams, CKBD

This designer with American Woodmark Corp. is one of just a few elite NKBA members to have earned all nine Specialty Badges.

By Dianne M. Pogoda

“I believe I am called to a life of service,” says Kendrick Williams, CKBD. “I do my best to be my best.”

That service, he says, encompasses teaching and helping others, and making the spaces and lives of his clients beautiful and functional. Whether teaching a young men’s class at his church, teaching Business Management for adult learners at Devry University, or helping elementary school kids with their “Brain Bowl” preparation, he loves to share his time and talent. “I like the person I am when I help others,” he says. “There is no better feeling than helpful service.” So, the Tulsa-OK-based designer with American Woodmark Corp. has amped up his professional development by earning all nine NKBA Specialty Badges — in addition to earning his Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer credential.

Earn a Badge Today — Learn More >

“I really wanted to continue to grow and learn. I want to be considered a resource where others could come and learn about all the different options and facets of kitchen and bath design,” said Williams, asked what inspired him to earn all the badges. “Since there was nothing technically stopping me, I figured I’d challenge myself to see if I could accomplish earning all nine badges — and it feels good to say that I accomplished that goal.”

Williams, who is one of just six NKBA members to earn all nine badges, has been in the design field for more than three decades. He started as a project architect in Orlando, FL, including stints at Jacobs Engineering, Walt Disney Imagineering, and Wyndham Vacation Ownership, working on projects ranging from supermarket, theme park and hotel renovations to managing construction of a parking garage and city government projects. He now works in Design Services for American Woodmark. He is a member of the Baltimore/Washington Chapter, since the company is headquartered in Winchester, VA, even though he works in Tulsa.

He chatted with NKBA about the significance of his accomplishment.

What do you find to be the most important benefit of the badges?

KW: The badges represent recognition of effort and study to continue to grow and learn about what kitchen and bath designers do. I often refer to the study material to help explain a choice or design strategy, or to just refresh my own knowledge. I really love how the NKBA sets its members up for success.

Which was easiest for you, which was most difficult, and why?

KW: Some badges were less challenging — in another life I was a Project Architect and Construction Project Manager — such as Cabinetry, Floor Plans & Specifications, and Remodeling. I enjoyed reviewing what I had previously been taught and how it pertains to K&B design. The more challenging badges (and some of the most fun) were Universal Design, Sustainability, Lighting, Sales & Marketing and especially Color. I absolutely loved exploring how color shapes mood and perception and how to use color to anchor design elements. It was like architecture school all over again. I thoroughly enjoyed the exercise.

Is there one badge that has helped you more than the others?

KW: That depends on the project I am working on at the time. For instance, I was tasked with compiling a PowerPoint presentation on Sustainability and sharing it with my colleagues and supervisors. For multi-unit projects, I have leaned heavily on the teachings on Universal Design to make suggestions on more thoughtful K&B layouts. I have also been able to present new color combinations incorporating different hues and textures into interesting project types, such as apartments, senior living facilities, and large single-family residences for luxury builders.

What did you learn that surprised you about the process?

KW: I was really surprised about how much fun I had learning and studying for the badges. I thought I’d just enjoy the challenge but found myself more in love with all the wonderful and insightful information. It was like I was in overload — but in a good way. Seeing the business of kitchen and bath design embedded in the study material was interesting and inspiring.

Anything else you want us to know about your journey in earning the badges?

KW: With the right amount of planning and patience, anything is possible. I appreciate the NKBA offering discounted pricing to encourage people seeking more educational opportunities; I was able to pursue all nine badges using NKBA’s offers. It served as a good reminder to not allow anything to stop you from achieving something once you set your mind to it.
