Company News

Miele to build new U.S. plant: German premium appliance giant Miele has revealed plans to open its first production plant in the U.S. to serve the North American market. Potential sites are under consideration in the U.S., and the new facility is expected to begin operations at the end of 2024, ultimately with a workforce of 150. The new factory in North America will serve the U.S., Canada and Mexico with products, mainly cooking appliances, and provide shorter lead times and reduced transportation, resulting in less environmental impact. This will be Miele’s 16th production facility. It currently has eight plants in Germany, another six throughout Europe and one in China. Miele’s U.S. headquarters is in Princeton, NJ. More info here.

Caesarstone’s latest launch: Surfacing company Caesarstone has expanded its offering with a new porcelain collection and a natural stone line. Designs include natural marble, concrete and metal, featuring heightened veining, palpable textures and patterns. The porcelain offers the same non-porous health and maintenance advantages as its quartz selections. The company says its porcelain is highly durable, withstands stains and scratches, is heat-resistant and suitable for indoor or outdoor applications. Learn more here.

PDI’s brand refresh: PDI Kitchen, Bath & Lighting is marking its 50th year in business with a refreshed brand identity and new logo. Founded in 1973 as Plumbing Distributors Inc. in Lawrenceville, GA, PDI is a family-owned kitchen, bath and lighting retailer. The brand has 26 locations across Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee, including the first two Kohler Signature showrooms in the Southeast. It also runs an extensive wholesale distribution business. The new identity reflects the company’s expansion, brand evolution and modern business approach. Learn more about PDI here.

Smart cooktops seen at $2.3B in 8 years: The market for smart cooktops is expected to more than double from $1.1 billion to $2.3 billion in annual sales by 2031, according to Transparency Market Research. Improved design and technology,  enhanced energy efficiency and lower environmental impact are credited for boosting demand. Transparency Market Research has more detail here.

Sustainability plays key role: A recent Houzz study revealed that 92 percent of homeowners incorporate sustainable features in kitchen renovations, including LED bulbs and energy-efficient appliances and windows, and water-efficient fixtures. Long-term cost savings was the top-cited reason for incorporating environmentally friendly elements, according to the survey. More here.

Lumens’ competition lights up: Lumens is holding a Design Luminaries Competition, which recognizes design students and emerging design businesses and their mentors. Entrants will conceptualize a collaborative design space, with plans for at least two of the following zones: lounge, breakout space, presentation room, sample bank showroom and main coworking space. Prizes will be awarded for current students studying design, architecture or color, as well as small businesses that have been open for at least two years. Submission is through May 19. Catching up With… Texas North Plains Chapter

A Furry Good Time at “Dogs & Design”
Chapter President Samantha Vogt, Dana Bass, Jenifer Wiley, Heidi Arwine, and Taylor Massey

We love it when NKBA members let their creativity shine by dreaming up amazing events, and this was certainly the case with “Dogs & Design” hosted by our Texas North Plains Chapter.

“I’m a huge dog lover,” said Programs Chair Nicole Raynes, “And there are so many people in our chapter who love dogs, have dogs, or have done designs for dogs. It’s a fun niche in our community–designing for dogs.”

The elements for the event quickly crystallized in Nicole’s mind. Choosing Daltile Dallas as the venue was easy, as tile is a #1 material sourced when designing for dogs, and their showroom is also close to the Dallas Animal Services Shelter–which shared insights about the shelter and ways to help in addition to contributing to the event’s DAS Shelter donation drive.

Daltile Dallas was the perfect venue for “Dogs & Design”

For the featured experts, Jenifer Wiley, owner of J Wiley Designs, was a natural–she has designed several projects for dogs, including showers, built-in dog bowls and crates, and a sofa with a scooped out back so a client’s pooch could comfortably peer out the window without damaging the piece.

Adding to the guest panel were dog-friendly designers Dana Bass, owner of Dana Bass Designs, and Heidi Arwine, owner of Heidi Arwine Interiors, and dog trainer Taylor Massey, owner of Six Packs & Dog Packs Training, who shared practical dog psychology designers can use when they visit clients’ homes.

Chapter President Samantha Vogt, Dana Bass, Jenifer Wiley, Heidi Arwine, and Taylor Massey

The event brought in 50 attendees (all human) and included complimentary custom pet doodles by Dallas-based sketch artist Groovy Zuky. To make the logistics easier, everyone who RSVP’d for the event could email a photo of their pet ahead of time and pick up their artwork the day of the event. It worked out beautifully, as Groovy Zuky received 15 additional requests during the event itself.

This being Texas, guests nibbled on Mexican food and also had the opportunity to build mini animal figurines with Lego-style bricks.

Catching Up With… Texas Gulf Coast Chapter

A Ted Lasso-Inspired Summer Social As International As It Gets
Gigi Dornad, Isabel Mendez, Miguelina Veras, Jean-Louis Breux, and Anne Breux

With Houston playing host to the World Cup, Lisa Slappey had a cheeky idea.

The Silver Sponsor and former secretary of the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter envisioned a summer social where people could cheer and chill … and that’s how the idea for a Ted Lasso-inspired watch party was born.

“Houston is an extremely diverse city. We have people here from all over the world, and there has been tremendous excitement for the World Cup,” said Lisa, who with business partner Mehdi Abedi owns Pride of Persia Rug Co. & Postmodern Traditions, where the watch party was held on June 23rd. “We wanted to have a low-stress summer gathering to connect local industry peers, and we wanted to encourage people who didn’t know much about soccer to come watch, hence the Ted Lasso theme.”

For those not familiar with the popular comedy series by the same name, Lasso was an American football coach hired to coach an English football team. True to the show, the event featured “Biscuits With the Boss” (shortbread cookies), and a “Believe” sign amidst decorations of soccer balls and international flags. Guests were encouraged to wear team colors. Around 50 people showed up, including many new faces. Team jerseys abounded, and one guest even made a referee costume.

A new TV and a wall projector were used to broadcast the England v Ghana and Panama v Croatia matches. Dinner included Persian specialities made by Mehdi Abedi.

You might be wondering: just how did a Persian rug company get into NKBA?

“We had some wonderful NKBA leaders in the community who kept inviting me to events,” recalled Lisa. “I put a lot of rugs in kitchens and baths, and it occurred to me that I should know what designers are doing in kitchens and baths! A whole new aspect of design opened up to me when I joined NKBA, and I have been an advocate since–especially for our student members.”

Five Questions With… Jeremy Parcels, Global Connect Advisor

Expert insights from a lifetime in building and design

Jeremy Parcels, CKBD, is the Owner/Principal Designer of Parcels Design Studio, LLC, based in Denver, Colorado. He has won multiple design awards and is a published designer. An experienced showroom veteran with expertise in European brands and modern design, he enjoys helping teach the next generation in the industry through his public speaking and leading learning sessions at KBIS, IBS, and Surfaces. Jeremy has been named NKBA Chapter President of the Year and NKBA Chapter Officer of the Year. Kitchen and Bath Design News recognized Jeremy as one of the industry’s top innovators in 2021.

NKBA: Tell us about your professional background and involvement with NKBA.

Jeremy Parcels: I grew up in the construction and remodeling industry–my family owned a construction company and operated a Merrillat cabinet showroom. I studied architecture at the University of South Florida and returned to the family business where I learned kitchen and bath design from my grandfather. That experience shaped the foundation of my career.

I became involved with NKBA in 2008 through the Central Florida Chapter, serving in leadership roles including Chapter Representative and Chapter President, and earned my AKBD in 2009.

After relocating to Colorado, I attended my first NKBA Rocky Mountain Chapter event and immediately got involved again–serving in roles from communications to Chapter President. In 2020 I earned my CKBD.

NKBA: As a Global Connect Advisor, what insights or services can you offer Global Connect members?

Jeremy Parcels: With an extensive background in both design and retail showrooms in the United States, I bring practical market knowledge to Global Connect members looking to enter or expand within North America. Our industry operates differently than many other parts of the world, and understanding those differences is critical to building a successful strategy and long-term presence.

As the dealer representative for Ballerina Kuchen, I’ve helped support the growth of their dealer network and North American presence over the past several years. That experience allows me to share real-world insights, help set realistic expectations, and guide members toward a thoughtful and successful market entry.

NKBA: Throughout your career, what are the most common mistakes you have seen that hamper a company’s success as they try to enter/expand in the North American market?

Jeremy Parcels: The biggest mistake I see is trying to scale too quickly without enough research. There’s often an assumption that success comes from opening a flagship showroom in a major market like New York, Miami, or Toronto and backing it with significant advertising investment.

In reality, that approach rarely reflects how our market works or how relationships are built with specifiers and end users. Success here requires understanding regional differences, building the right partnerships, and growing strategically. Too often, companies overinvest upfront, exhaust their resources, and ultimately exit the market before gaining traction.

NKBA: How do you see the North American market evolving, and how will this evolution impact how international brands do business here?

Jeremy Parcels: The North American market is constantly evolving, and each region continues to develop in its own way. At the same time, I see increasing opportunities for international brands to communicate a consistent brand message across the continent that resonates within the design community.

The challenge (and opportunity) is determining what that message should be and how to deliver it effectively. Successful brands are those that balance a strong, unified identity with a thoughtful understanding of regional market dynamics.

NKBA: While every company’s journey is different, what is one general piece of advice you have for a company thinking of entering the North American market?

Jeremy Parcels: Every market–and every company–is different. My advice is to identify the cities, states, provinces, and regions that are most likely to connect with and adopt your product first. Launch strategically, build a loyal customer base, and create demand organically.

Too often, companies try to make the “Times Square splash” before establishing a foundation. Sustainable growth comes from earning advocates, refining your approach, and expanding with intention rather than scale for scale’s sake.

About NKBA Global Connect

The NKBA Global Connect mission is to connect and grow the kitchen and bath industry around the world through an international membership program. The initiative equips international companies with the support and professional community access they need to thrive in North America by providing market intelligence, brand-positioning guidance, and connections to key North American audiences. By combining NKBA’s expert marketing execution with access to a diverse and influential member network, we help businesses improve visibility, build meaningful relationships, and generate strong market demand, ultimately accelerating their success in the lucrative and competitive $228 billion North American market. U.S. Stone Slab Products Act: The House Judiciary Committee votes to advance House Resolution 5437, also known as the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Stone Slab Products Act, which would prohibit civil actions against a manufacturer or seller of a stone slab product for harm resulting from the alteration of such a product by a fabricator.

What You Will Learn

Are you prepared for the sweeping changes defining the Surface industry in 2026? The traditional landscape of the Quartz, Tile, and Stone sectors is undergoing a transformation. Driven by federal silica-related lawsuits, the business is facing new strict safety certifications, dramatically altering fabrication costs and current business models. Simultaneously, it is up against an aging workforce. For every five baby boomers retiring from the trades, only two candidates from younger generations are coming behind them, threatening a significant loss of critical institutional memory, “the brain drain.”

While these challenges are creating disruption in the current marketplace, we believe this disruption brings with it unprecedented opportunity. This high-energy, data-driven webinar offers a strategic blueprint for thriving in this new era. We will explore the transition from manual, analog labor to a technical, data-driven trade that prioritizes both safety and entrepreneurial acumen. We will demonstrate how transformative change is possible by embracing innovation into every facet of your business (fabrication, installation, people, business model). Whether you are a fabricator, installer, designer, or contractor, this session will equip you with actionable insights to build a resilient, forward-thinking, and highly profitable business.

Learning Objectives:

SME Corey Klassen Discusses Revamping NKBA K&B Planning Guidelines

K&B Subject Matter Expert Corey Klassen, RID, NCIDQ, CMKBD, reveals the evolution behind an industry standard.

By NKBA Staff

The NKBA’s Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines have been the industry’s gold standard for years, serving as an essential reference for design professionals. Published since 1992, it is the most complete collection of illustrations and planning recommendations available in one source, covering the planning and installation of beautiful, efficient, code-compliant kitchens and baths and other interior spaces.

As the industry evolves, the Planning Guidelines must be adapted to changing codes and regulations, technology and material advancements, and design and building trends. This is a painstaking, highly detailed process.

Enter Subject Matter Expert Corey Klassen, RID, NCIDQ, CMKBD, an award-winning interior designer and owner of Articulated Design Studio (founded as Corey Klassen Interior Design in 2011) in Vancouver, British Columbia. Klassen has been a leading expert of the Planning Guidelines revisions for the last two editions, including the most recent fifth edition, with the collaboration of other SMEs and key stakeholders, including educators, practitioners, and accessibility advocates.

The transition from the third edition to the fourth was “a monumental lift,” and the new fifth edition has even more refinement, said Klassen, who traveled from Vancouver to the U.S. to take the NKBA certification exams – AKBD, CKD, and CBD. “Our overall objective was to increase comprehension through clarity and consolidation, and that meant paying very close attention to our word choices and layout so that the Planning Guidelines can be more universally understood.”

Klassen revealed that some key updates and revisions to the fifth edition included further defining the best practices for accessibility in “Chapter 1: Human Factors and Accessibility,” expanding storage systems and finishes in “Chapter 6: Interior Environment Planning,” and extensive clarity on ventilation, power, lighting, and illumination planning in “Chapter 7: Building Systems Planning.”

“A new comprehension tool we introduced was the use of notes after each guideline, where we were able to capture additional context, related factors and considerations, and additional short-form context.”

Klassen said their top challenge was to bring parity across international borders. “I often remark to my U.S. colleagues that while we may speak and read similar English, that closeness can still have great diversity and nuance in building codes. I think we all understand that model codes, such as the International Residential Code, change every four years, but a key driver was a lesser-known compliance publication in Canada called CSA/ASC B652 Accessible Dwellings (2023). What was remarkable to all the subject matter experts, including myself, was how much further along this technical publication was in accessibility, and we embraced it through many lively discussions, researching and sourcing supporting reference materials, and with conversations in each of our communities.”

Inclusivity is central to Klassen’s overall design approach and played a significant role in revising the fifth edition of the guidelines.

“Terms such as ‘design from the margins’ and ‘nothing for them without them’ are fundamentals that help define how empathy is applied in my daily routine,” Klassen said, adding that it was important for individuals to be able to synthesize the Planning Guidelines. “Some of the deeper challenges that we are all facing are constant cognitive overload, common language evolution, and the rate and speed at which artificial intelligence and technology are influencing us. For me, this meant that regardless of which nationality, race, physical ability, disability, or language that characterizes the reader, that the Planning Guidelines can be understood. Facts provide clarity. I think this is what my husband and I endeavor to embody in our interior design firm.”

Klassen concluded, “I have been afforded so many professional opportunities to expand my skills, knowledge, and professionalism through my membership with the NKBA. It has been a tremendous honour — I’m Canadian, it’s how we spell it — to work on, collaborate with, research, synthesize, write (and rewrite) the Planning Guidelines into this new experience for Certified Kitchen & Bath Designers, Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designers, and allied design professionals across many industry sectors.

“We owe a tremendous thank you to Doug Walter, CMKBD; Robin Rigby-Fisher, CMKBD; Judith A. Neary, CMKBD; and Cailin Thelen, CMKBD, as the subject matter experts for their contributions to the 5th edition, as well as Adrean Stephenson, CKBD of Chief Architect, Inc., who served as the primary illustrator of figures in the publication. For those considering NBKA Certifications, it will be a journey that might need reframing at times, but it’s important that we look at our learning CEU’s not just as requirements, but opportunities to study areas we wouldn’t typically practice.”

Five Questions With… Greg Rohl, Global Connect Advisor

The 30-year industry veteran shares insights for companies looking to enter the North American market

Greg Rohl is a former owner and manager at ROHL LLC, a leading luxury brand of faucets, fixtures, and accessories sourced from Western Europe, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and America. In 2016, Rohl LLC was acquired by Fortune Brands and formed the core of House of Rohl, an international collection of luxury faucet and fixture brands. Greg is the principal of therohlmodel, a learning and guidance service for the kitchen and bath industry, with a particular focus on teaching design and sales professionals a new language of luxury focused on original design, artisan craft, and wellbeing.

NKBA: Tell us about your professional background and involvement with NKBA.

Greg Rohl: Before joining the family business full-time, I worked in decorative plumbing showrooms and as an editor for an industry trade magazine and design books featuring NKBA-certified designers. In my years as an employee and owner at House of Rohl, I held many positions–from customer service to marketing to sales, ultimately serving as President of the Western Division.

Our company has always been an active supporter of NKBA at both the national and chapter levels. As a journalist, I reported on Southern California Chapter activities. For many years at House of Rohl, I was responsible for coordinating our participation at KBIS. As a consultant, I have created numerous educational presentations for the Voices from the Industry conference. I’ve been a Global Connect Advisor since 2019.

NKBA: As a Global Connect Advisor, what insights or services can you offer Global Connect members?

Greg Rohl: I focus on go-to-market strategy, product market fit, tailoring brand messages for different customer constituencies, sales management, sales training, product development, and customized educational content.

NKBA: Throughout your career, what are the most common mistakes you have seen that hamper a company’s success as they try to enter/expand in the North American market?

Greg Rohl:

  • Language Barrier: Communication challenges for owners or representatives who don’t speak English well.
  • Regional Considerations: Not realizing that the US has 4 time zones and at least 5 different regional cultures–and that different markets have different distribution players.
  • Long-term Vision: Not committing the proper time and resources–companies should commit to at least 5 years to establish a new brand.
  • Marketing Strategy: Not having a compelling, value-based story tailored for the various industry constituencies, i.e., showroom owners, consultants, designers, sales representatives, plumbers, builders, etc.
  • Joint Venture: Failing to partner with a distributor or agency that understands the market and can guide them.

NKBA: How do you see the North American market evolving, and how will this evolution impact how international brands do business here?

Greg Rohl: NKBA’s reporting on the future of the North American market indicates tremendous potential for brands that meet an unmet need, are differentiated, profitable, and dependable to work with.

NKBA: While every company’s journey is different, what is one general piece of advice you have for a company thinking of entering the North American market?

Greg Rohl: Be hungry but humble. Take time to understand the market and expect to grow a business over time by delivering value to all stakeholders–distributors, showrooms, designers, and end users. Oh, and read our book, The Corporateneur Plan, for a step-by-step example of building a successful business marketing luxury European products in the US.
