The Voices from the Industry Conference, NKBA’s highly anticipated professional development program at KBIS 2025 in Las Vegas, gives attendees more than 70 seminars and webinars full of valuable information covering the latest trends and business strategies shaping the future of the industry. Attendees can earn CEU credits, with options for on-site training or on-demand viewing after the show.

Subject Matter Experts will share their deep knowledge during the upcoming edition, Feb. 25 to 27 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Seminars and workshops are organized into six tracks: Building & Remodeling, Design, Hot Topics, K&B Trends, Leadership & Management, and Marketing. Protect your Intellectual Property, Protect your Brand

Celebrity designers have long been involved in licensing deals, but recently there has been a shift in how the industry approaches collaborations. Beverly Hills designer Christopher Grubb, with seven licensing partnerships, will discuss how he initiated and pursued these collaborations, establishing himself as a brand in product design. Topics include the development process, time and energy required, financial considerations, and potential returns. NKBA Announces Key Leadership Appointments to Drive Global Growth and Operational Excellence

New Senior-Level Promotions Reflect Strategic Focus on Business Development, Operations, and Global Marketing

Bethlehem, PA – January 14, 2025 — The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), the authority on the residential kitchen and bath industry and owners of the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS), is proud to announce three significant leadership appointments as part of its strategic vision to foster innovation, expand globally, and elevate KBIS, the industry’s premier trade show.

Geraldine Morrison, a seasoned business leader and industry expert, has been appointed Chief Partnerships Officer, Domestic & Global Brands. With a proven track record in general management and P&L leadership at top-tier companies like Samsung, Lixil, Phillips, and Sprint, Geraldine brings extensive expertise to this critical role. She holds an MBA in Marketing and a Mini-MBA in Social Media Marketing from Rutgers University. Geraldine will focus on global integration and business growth, ensuring NKBA continues to strengthen its position as the central hub for the industry.

In 2024, Deb Webb assumed the role of Executive Vice President, Operations and KBIS, overseeing the management and execution of KBIS and all NKBA domestic and global events, including the strategic partnership with KBIS co-location partner, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) with the International Builders Show (IBS) for Design and Construction Week. With a strong commitment to customer-centric operations and a deep understanding of event management, Deb is dedicated to exceeding expectations. Her expertise ensures NKBA continues to deliver exceptional experiences across all platforms and her operational acumen ensures Association events set the standard for the industry. Prior to joining NKBA, Deb was SVP of Event Operations with Emerald, NKBA’s KBIS show management partner.

Heather Shannon joined NKBA as the Senior Director of Marketing. In 2024 she was promoted to Senior Vice President of Strategic Growth to help support the organization’s focus on international relations. The addition of Geraldine to the Leadership Team, focusing on global integration and business growth, has now allowed Heather to fully concentrate her efforts as the Senior Vice President, Marketing & Communications. In this role Heather will lead both global and domestic marketing efforts, leveraging her vast experience, most recently from her leadership position at longtime NKBA member Perlick, to enhance brand visibility and amplify NKBA’s impact across the industry.

NKBA | KBIS Message on California Fire Assistance

I know that all of us are thinking of our friends, family, and everyone in California impacted by the Los Angeles wildfires.

I have spoken to colleagues, members and industry partners in the area, some of whom have evacuated or lost their homes. The devastation is heartbreaking. On behalf of all of us at NKBA|KBIS, we send our deepest support and offer thoughts of resilience and strength during such a devastating time for so many.

We are truly thankful to the firefighters, first responders, and all those assisting in the heroic rescue and recovery efforts.

As people who dedicate our daily work to helping people create a stronger, more personalized sense of home, it is our hope that the design and home building community will do all that we can to aid victims of the fires.

NKBA Skilled Labor Workforce Study Reveals the Deep Impacts of a Persistent Shortage

K&B Companies are Utilizing a Range of Strategies to Minimize the Effect on Their Bottom Line

As the kitchen and bath industry continues to navigate the implications of a significant skilled labor shortage, the NKBA has conducted the NKBA I KBIS Skilled Labor Workforce Study to better understand businesses’ experiences and expectations as they work to meet this challenge. 

The survey of more than 400 NKBA members and other industry professionals explores current staffing needs, difficulties hiring skilled labor, hiring incentives, barriers to hiring, and other issues related to the shortfall.

These K&B industry pros say their workforces are predominantly (66%) comprised of full-time employees, and more than half (51%) of businesses are currently searching for more full-timers. Most (57%) are paying above-market wages – typically 8% or more — to attract and retain skilled labor. But the reality is that more than a third must resort to hiring less experienced or qualified workers to meet their basic staffing needs.

Full-Time Employees Wanted

The consensus among businesses in the kitchen and bath industry is that the skilled labor shortage has risen sharply over the past five years. Specifically, 58% of K&B businesses are currently experiencing a moderate or severe shortage, up from 41% five years ago. More than half of businesses indicate the greatest need is for full-time workers. This group is the most difficult to hire – especially those with more than five years’ experience. The most in-demand positions are installers and carpenters, both cited by 42% of respondents.

Root Causes of a Persistent Problem

Businesses shared that changing lifestyle and work expectations (33%), a generational shift away from trades (29%), as well as a lack of education/training (29%) are the most common causes of the ongoing skilled labor shortage. Very few (8%) cited their hiring and retention strategies as a factor.

Scarcity of experienced workers and a general lack of applicants are the top barriers to recruitment. Others include the ability to offer competitive wages and high training costs associated with onboarding.

Feeling the Impact: Project Delays and Increased Workloads

Project delays — both starts and finishes — and increased workloads for existing employees are the biggest negative impacts on business caused by the skilled labor shortage. On average, 16% of projects are delayed due to the labor shortage. Those delays have the biggest impact on customers, primarily affecting project starts and finishes, as well as longer delivery timeframes and waits for products.

How Businesses are Coping

Businesses are adapting to the skilled labor shortage by expanding benefits and retention strategies, improving recruitment, and investing in educational programs – all efforts to attract new workers from a limited pool.

They are also doing more to improve conditions for their current employees. More than a third of the surveyed businesses (35%) have invested in digital tools and software to reduce the strain on existing staff. They’re also tapping into other external solutions by outsourcing products and services. Internally, businesses are streamlining workflows and implementing new training programs to achieve greater efficiency.

One area of opportunity in retention strategy is work-life balance. Participants cited better benefits (including work-life balance) as one of the top reasons for voluntary turnover (25%), but very few (7%) report their businesses are addressing work-life balance as part of their strategy. 

“We are experiencing a major skilled labor shortage that is greatly impacting our industry, and it’s not going away anytime soon,” said Bill Darcy, Global President & CEO, NKBA | KBIS. “Kitchen and bath companies are being smart and resourceful in confronting this challenge as best they can. But tackling the underlying issues head-on requires big thinking and bigger action, from developing new educational models to changing cultural dynamics around professions we desperately need to revitalize.”

Saddleback College’s Cassandra Jerrems Scoops Up Second in Student Design Competition

As one of six winners of the annual competition open exclusively to NKBA | KBIS student members, the burgeoning designer was awarded a scholarship.

NKBA | KBIS honors the top kitchen and bath projects by the industry’s most innovative and influential designers at the annual Kitchen & Bath Design + Industry Awards. Each year, that includes the six winners of the Student Design Competition, generously sponsored by Fisher & Paykel, which awards scholarships, in both kitchen and bath categories, of $5,000 for first place, $2,500 for second, and $1,000 for third. This year, the students will be honored at the awards on Monday, February 24, 2025 in the Lafite Ballroom at Wynn Las Vegas during KBIS 2025. ​​In the coming weeks, we’ll also be revealing details about the remaining finalists of the Student Design Competition.

“Nostalgic Nouveau” by Cassandra Jerrems of Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California, was awarded second place honors in the 2023-2024 Student Design Competition kitchen category for balancing the G-shape of its kitchen effectively and incorporating a practical approach to seating. Paying homage to NKBA | KBIS’s 60th anniversary, the 2023-2024 competition scenario featured a mid-century home with architectural elements common to the 1960’s. Students were tasked with updating the home’s kitchen and primary bathroom to make them more modern and functional for an active family of four. Competition participants were challenged by the small square footage of the rooms and the expectation to incorporate a mix of vintage style and touches of modern art into the finished designs.

“A mix of sophistication while incorporating elements of the past create a space of ‘Nostalgia Nouveau,’” Jerrems says. “Streamlined shapes and natural textures form a stylistic sanctuary to prepare meals and make memories.” Both entryways feature arches and wood paneling that nod to midcentury architecture while Fireclay ceramic tile in Feldspar used on the backsplash complements the neutral color scheme found in various art pieces throughout the kitchen. Caesarstone quartz in Aterra Blanca featuring brown veins was sourced for countertops to further match the wood tones of the cabinetry. Terrazzo from Cemento Collection in Levanzo Cream was cited for the elegant flooring lying beneath light fixtures from Cedar & Moss that add illuminative fun to the space.

NKBA student members have the option to enter the upcoming kitchen competition, the bath competition, or both, crafting their designs around client requests and provided plans. Winning this prestigious competition enhances industry visibility and provides invaluable publicity and networking opportunities in addition to a complimentary KBIS registration, hotel accommodations, and round-trip airfare to attend KBIS 2026 in Orlando. Existing Home Sales and Contracts Jump: Sales of existing homes rose 4.8 percent in November, the fastest pace since March, according to the National Association of Realtors®. Year-over-year, sales jumped 6.1 percent from November 2023, posting the strongest YOY gain since June 2021, with the median sales price up 4.7 percent, marking the 17th consecutive month of YOY price increases. Meanwhile, pending home sales, a forward-looking indicator based on contract signings, grew 2.2 percent in the month, the fourth straight month of increases and the highest level since February 2023. Kitchen & Bath Design + Industry Awards 2025: Meet the Specialty Kitchen Finalists

Three creative and sought-after interior designers have been named finalists in the Specialty Kitchen category of the Kitchen & Bath Design + Industry Awards 2025. To find out which project will receive $5,000 for a first-place finish, $3,000 for second, and $2,000 for third you’ll need to wait until the February 24 awards ceremony, the must-attend KBIS 2025 opening event in the Lafite Ballroom at Wynn Las Vegas. But here’s a preview of all three eye-catching and solution-oriented designs. Read on to find out what made these the top three Specialty Kitchen projects in NKBA’s 2025 Professional Design Awards.

Kate Roos, Kate Roos Design, Minneapolis: “Parkway”

Kate Roos, Principal and Lead Designer of Minneapolis-based Kate Roos Design, was asked by a local client to reinvigorate a dated butler’s pantry that was mainly used for storing barware and fine china as well as serving as a coffee bar. While the layout worked well, the dark-finished cabinets felt tired and many of the doors were difficult to open and close. With a design objective that included replacing all cabinetry, appliances, and plumbing — as well as updating materials and finishes to blend in with a new kitchen palette — Roos set out to create a space that felt “bright, cheerful, and comfortable.” Improving storage efficiency and access was a top priority, achieved by installing interior supports in the wall cabinetry to allow for wider doors, as well as custom base cabinetry with storage inserts and full-extension drawer guides. New additions included an ice-maker and a beverage fridge, both 15-inches in width, which flank a small sink. The cabinetry was painted and soapstone countertops and wooden corbels were chosen to be consistent with the kitchen, while a soft blue wallpaper featuring birds and botanicals soften the look of the adjoining banquette area and a large mirror reflects light from the window to visually open the space.

Kristen Giacomini and Ali Johnson, Flow Designs, Reno, NV: “A Happy Home”

Kristen Giacomini, Owner and Principal Designer of Reno-NV-based Flow Designs, was joined by  Ali Johnson, her studio’s Junior Interior Design, to remodel a local kitchen to meet the needs of a family of five that had been diagnosed with clinical ADHD. The primary objective was to create a well-organized space where “every area fosters focus, creativity, and joy” and to add a pantry without using the existing kitchen space. The pantry also needed to feature open shelving to ensure that items were seen — and used — and be accessible but mostly secluded from the main kitchen area to minimize distraction. The solution? Revitalize an underutilized dining room by transforming it into a butler’s pantry with a convenient pass-through from the kitchen and windows for natural light. Tall built-in shelves keep everything organized and visible, making it easy for family members to find what they need. There’s also a coffee and tea bar near the sink along with specialized storage (a bread drawer and a candy drawer) and plenty of counterspace for small appliances.

Wendy Glaister, Wendy Glaister Interiors, Modesto, CA: “Outdoor Oasis”

With California living centered around beautiful outdoor spaces, Wendy Glaister, Founder and Principal of Modesto, CA-based Wendy Glaister Interiors, was asked to redesign a backyard space as a four-season “Outdoor Oasis” with an emphasis on entertaining — including a chef’s kitchen and multiple areas for dining and relaxing. The design called for the existing space to be enlarged by 1,000 square feet and for exterior finishes to be simplified for “a more serene visual experience” with smooth finish stucco used to cover rock veneer and brick. This allowed for the installation of a fireplace and TV, which serve as a focal point. While the entire design features multiple living areas and lounging spaces, plus a fire pit, pool, spa, and sports courts (putting green, pickleball court, and bocce court) connected by lighted pathways, the showstopper is the kitchen. It has two dramatic 12-foot waterfall-edge islands with a gas grill and griddle, Italian pizza oven, refrigerator, ice machine, sink, and beverage chiller. It adjoins the living area, which is nestled under a massive pergola and features a linear gas fireplace, upholstered Lee outdoor sofa and swivel chairs, and biophilic-inspired coffee tables. The AV system was upgraded to a new surround-sound Sonos system that can be controlled from a smartphone, while several large TVs allow the homeowners and their guests to watch sporting events and movies while enjoying food prepared and served from the kitchen.

Luxury Kitchens Remain King Amidst Rising Mortgage Rates

Designers and homeowners agree that kitchens are their top renovation priority, and according to Cosentino’s 2024 trend report, nearly one-quarter of the total home design budget is dedicated to kitchen updates. NKBA’s VFTI Conference at KBIS 2025 offers a compelling slate of CEU-qualified learning sessions designed to develop stronger businesses, skills, and strategies.

The Voices from the Industry Conference, NKBA’s highly anticipated professional development program at KBIS 2025 in Las Vegas, offers more than 70 seminars and webinars full of valuable information covering the latest trends, marketing techniques, and business strategies shaping the future of the industry. Attendees may earn CEU credits, with options for on-site training or on-demand viewing after the show.

Subject Matter Experts will share their deep knowledge during the upcoming edition, Feb. 25 to 27 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Research

The NKBA’s Skilled Labor Workforce Report will be released on January 8 on our site, nkba.org/research. This study examines labor challenges affecting the kitchen and bath industry, focusing on businesses’ hiring needs and expectations. The report highlights a significant shortage of skilled workers in both design and trades, which is delaying projects and increasing costs. It also identifies the hardest-to-fill positions, as well as key recruitment and retention strategies.

As you know, all Chapters are required to submit your Strategic Goals by the end of the quarter. It’s time to submit your Compliance Form (includes Strategic Goals); Year-End Financial Report; and Initiative Grant Application. NKBA | KBIS Kitchen Trends Summit Highlights 2025 Kitchen Trends Report and New Video Series

Along with the debut of the first installment of Behind the Design, the annual report stated that personalized design, accent colors, multifunctional appliances, and clutter reduction are trending.

“What sets NKBA kitchen trends research apart from the many other studies conducted on this topic each year? The caliber of its respondents: Designers participating in this year’s study have an average of 17 years experience and have completed approximately 30 kitchens in the past year. That means, collectively, they designed more than 15,000 kitchen projects in 2024.”

The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA | KBIS) released the 2025 edition of its annual Kitchen Trends Report on December 17 to provide a comprehensive look into current and upcoming trends in residential kitchens that will have the biggest impact in the coming year. Paired with the webinar, was the debut of the inaugural installment of the highly anticipated Behind the Design video series starring its first designer, Mexico City–born Nar Bustamante.

According to the report, the focus over the next three years will remain on sustainability and wellness, calming earth tones, and the importance of lighting design. The report also reveals key emerging trends, including personalized design, clutter reduction, multifunctional appliances, and biophilic design, which focuses on bringing the outdoors inside and a connection to nature. 

“The kitchen and bath industry remains resilient as we are seeing record levels of home equity, with 20+ million homes entering their prime remodeling years,” says NKBA | KBIS Global President & CEO Bill Darcy. “The 2025 Kitchen Trends Report comes at a crucial time, guiding the key changes designers can make to increase the longevity of their clients’ spaces while customizing unique homes with both aesthetic and functional creativity.”

Comprised of data generated from a survey completed by industry experts including designers, manufacturers, remodelers, and architects, the full report, delivered by NKBA | KBIS’s longtime Head of Research Tricia Zach, is available at NKBA.org with free access for NKBA members. Key findings of the top 20 kitchen trends for 2025 included:

Colors & Materials: What’s In, What’s Out

  • Blast From the Past: Past trends are making a comeback in 2025, with 52% of respondents saying the bright colors and earth tones of the 1970’s will be popular and 47% saying that the muted mid-century modern aesthetic of the 1950’s will see a resurgence. 
  • Preference for Personality: As part of a broader trend that focuses on personalized design, 71% of respondents said they preferred colorful kitchens that showcase personality as opposed to only 29% of respondents who prefer a clean and classic white kitchen. Statement colors will primarily be incorporated into backsplashes, islands, cabinets, wallpapers, and wall paints.
  • Color is King: White and gray kitchens are still off-trend, with homeowners preferring light, natural colors instead. Green is the most popular color for the second year, with 76% of respondents selecting it as the top shade for 2025. Other prominent colors are blue (63%) and brown (56%).
  • Mix-and-Match: Stemming from the personalized design trend is blending colors and finishes, with 67% of respondents agreeing that mix-and-match backsplashes add a unique touch to the kitchen and 84% of respondents agreeing that lighting fixtures will increasingly feature differing materials.  
  • Statement Cabinets: Of those surveyed, 52% of respondents agree that cabinets will be a primary place for incorporating statement colors into the kitchen. Additionally, white oak kitchen cabinets are the clear favorite with 59% of respondents listing them as the preferred color for 2025. 

Healthy Living Starts in the Kitchen

The kitchen is becoming an epicenter for wellness, with 74% of respondents agreeing that ovens with steam cooking and air frying technology will be popular to support healthier cooking methods. A total of 53% of respondents state that kitchens will become increasingly connected to the outdoors and become focused on healthy living in the next three years. Designers agree that water (72%) and air (62%) quality are top considerations in kitchen design, reflecting the continued prioritization of wellness.

Bringing the Outdoors Inside

Biophilic design is on the rise, with 72% of respondents reporting that homeowners want a kitchen with a greater connection to the outdoors. Creating an open and airy feel, 67% of respondents agree that large windows will be a popular way to bring more light into kitchens. Additionally, 64% of respondents say that sustainable food sources, such as herb and veggie gardens, are increasingly popular in the kitchen. 

Seamless Design and Clutter Reduction 

Open pantries and shelves are out, as homeowners increasingly desire clutter-free kitchens with concealed elements, such as hidden doors, panel-ready fronts for appliances, and walk-in pantries. Of those surveyed, 87% said homeowners want pantries that are concealed behind cabinet doors or panels to maintain a seamless kitchen design, while 66% said walk-in pantries and butler’s pantries will be popular in the next 3 years.

Making the Most of Your Kitchen

A total of 90% of respondents said that, as a result of working from home, homeowners are interested in remodeling to improve the functionality and aesthetics of the kitchen. Thus, multifunctionality will be a prominent kitchen trend in 2025, with 91% of respondents agreeing that appliances with more than one function are popular with homeowners. More specifically, 52% of respondents agree that adding a second kitchen island to increase functionality is gaining popularity and 83% of respondents agree that sinks with food prep and serving areas are becoming popular. 

The Mood Kitchen

Homeowners are increasingly focused on lighting’s role in creating a “well space” that supports functionality and mood. According to 74% of respondents, homeowners are using lighting to improve their physical and mental well-being. Respondents report that natural light and lighting quality are top considerations in kitchen design, with 88% agreeing that lighting is widely used to create different moods within the kitchen, such as brightness while drinking coffee in the morning or a darker atmosphere for a cocktail party. 

What Does Your Kitchen Say About You?

It’s clear that unique and personal design is crucial: 92% of respondents agree that the kitchen is a reflection of a homeowner’s personality and 85% of respondents agree that the kitchen has the strongest impact on the “personality” of the home as a whole. As personalized design continues to rise in popularity, 71% of respondents agree that their clients prefer a colorful kitchen to let their personalities shine through, and 75% of designers agree that homeowners want a kitchen that is unique to them. Decorative hardware, statement lighting, and pops of color in artwork are ways to showcase personality through kitchen design.
