How To Meet Your Client’s Smart Home Needs & Questions

Technology is increasingly woven into the fabric of our everyday lives. The pandemic made this reality even more noticeable with so many suddenly working and learning from home, creating more demand for more home technology. Beyond entertainment technologies like audio/video and media rooms, the peace of mind supplied by security systems and surveillance cameras, and the requirement for reliable and secure Wi-Fi, clients increasingly want their home to be “smart”. What exactly is a “smart home” and how do I answer my clients’ questions about smart home options? How does this affect my kitchen and bath design? How much do these home technologies cost? Who should install it? How does this affect the aesthetic design of the project, and what other trades might be affected?


This webinar will answer the above questions and empower you to have confident conversations with your client about how to approach their home tech needs. By having a plan on how to deal with the home’s low-voltage technologies, not only are you providing valuable guidance and insights to your clients, but your projects will also benefit aesthetically. In the past, designers were happy if the home’s technologies didn’t create an eyesore, though today’s proactive designer understands that properly designed and specified home technology can instead beautify a space and make the entire home more user-friendly. 


This course will share the scope of technologies that professional home technology integrators install and how to find and work with one that understands you and your clients’ needs.

Josh has been a technology enthusiast since a child and entered the home technology industry in 1995. Soon after, he began working with designers to help them integrate technology into their projects in the most aesthetically pleasing ways possible. In 2017 Josh co-founded the Home Technology Association (HTA) to create the industry’s first and only standard of excellence for home technology integrators so homeowners and design and build professionals could find qualified home technology integrators. The HTA has positioned itself as the ‘bridge’ between home technology integrators and the design and build professions.

He has delivered dozens of presentations to some of the top architects, and interior designers throughout the USA. In serving different roles, as a salesperson, a consultant, and an industry outreach liaison, Josh brings years of experience with integrating technology into design. His goal has always been for clients to have exceptional technology experiences. In his role as CEO of the HTA, he is delivering on that goal.

NKBA’s 2023-2024 Student Design Competition Now Open

Student members get the chance to win scholarships and a trip to KBIS, as well as industry recognition.

NKBA’s 2023-2024 Student Design Competition is now accepting submissions. Each year, students design dream spaces for fictional families. This year’s theme is “A Mid-Atlantic, Mid-Century.”

The ‘story’ behind this year’s project is a nod to NKBA’s 60th year anniversary and its founding in none other than…1963! It goes as follows: after blending families in 2018, Andre and Simone purchased their first home, a 1963 raised ranch in a New Jersey suburb, which they share with Simone’s five-year-old daughter and Andre’s seven-year-old son. While much work has already been done to the home that has unexpectedly become their “forever home,” the family’s kitchen and main (full) bath are in desperate need of a renovation. 

Students are tasked with designing a kitchen that is more spacious and caters to Andre and Simone’s taste, family and needs. The bath may be a bigger challenge. They have been asked to completely remodel the original main bath, and to make room for  a large, soaking tub. In creating their designs for the competition, students will need to honor the home’s original mid-century history, and look to incorporate statement colors and designs from the Sixties. 

Winners receive a complimentary ticket to KBIS 2025 in Las Vegas, admission to the Kitchen & Bath Design + Industry Awards, hotel and airfare and the following scholarship amounts:

  • First place: $5,000
  • Second place: $2,500
  • Third place: $1,000

Stu Dettelbach’s Perspective

A Discussion with the Founder of SD Kitchens and former NKBA President.

Stu Dettelbach, CKBD, Founder of SD Kitchens and former NKBA President, has been part of the kitchen and bath industry for more than 50 years. In 1973, he designed and installed his first kitchen, and in 1979, he opened his first showroom. Dettelbach’s term as NKBA President was from 1994-1995.

NKBA recently sat with Dettelbach to discuss his career, the association, and what he sees ahead for the kitchen and bath industry.

Remembering His NKBA Presidency

When recalling his time at NKBA, Dettelbach fondly remembered many moments — so many, in fact, that it was impossible for him to think of just one favorite memory. However, he did say that the people he met during his tenure were an important part of his experience. “Traveling to many chapters, working with the local executive committees and speaking with chapter members was exciting,” he said. “I feel lucky to have been president of NKBA; it gave me an opportunity to make friends throughout the industry and country.”

Changes in NKBA and in Dettelbach’s Career

Since his term as president in 1994, Dettelbach has watched NKBA go through many changes and continue on a path of growth —  growth of the number of chapters, growth of KBIS and growth of NKBA’s authority within the kitchen and bath industry. “NKBA has now become the ‘go to’ source for information about the industry,” he noted, adding that the association’s reputation has grown globally, too.

In terms of how his career and personal life have changed post-NKBA presidency, Dettelbach said that he has been focusing on his own kitchen remodeling and installation business, SD Kitchens. “My business will be 53 years old this summer,” he said.

Dettelbach has also assumed leadership roles in various areas, including the Bath & Kitchen Business Group and his local synagogue. In addition, he’s president of the Baltimore, MD-based 5013c charity, Weekend Backpacks for Homeless Kids, that helps children who face food insecurity. In all these roles, Dettelbach said, the public speaking and leadership skills he learned through his involvement in NKBA are “being put to good use.”

The Future of the K&B Industry

When answering a question about the future of the kitchen and bath industry, Dettelbach first provided some context by looking to the past. “I was NKBA President from 1994 to 1995,” he said, “and in those nearly-30 years [since then], the U.S. has experienced multiple recessions and a pandemic. Yet, the kitchen and bath industry always rebounds. Consumers who hibernated during the pandemic must have been dreaming of new kitchens and baths, since the industry is booming.”

Dettelbach went on to say that when he sees NKBA’s Thirty Under 30 class every year, along with their skills, he feels optimistic about the future of the industry.  

Advice From the Past President

At the end of the interview, Dettelbach shared the best advice he received during his K&B career: “Have fun.” He also said it was important for designers to understand that they played the role of “agents of change” who made improvements in the lives of their clients.

Top 10 Takeaways from NKBA’s Showrooms Report

Discover the role of independent showrooms in new builds and remodeling as well as current challenges.

NKBA’s first-ever Independent Kitchen & Bath Showrooms report highlights pivotal information about the changing role of showrooms in the K&B industry. The report, released during an NKBALive Research Reveal on Thursday, June 22, is available free to NKBA members here

Below are the top 10 highlights of the report.

  1. Independent showrooms continue to play an important role. Independent showrooms are integral in the kitchen and bath industry’s new build and remodeling projects, including DIY and those directed by a designer.

  2. Homeowners are most likely to frequent independent showrooms.
    This customer segment generates three times more revenue than industry professionals such as designers, contractors and builders. Homeowners are making K&B purchases for DIY projects and some designer-involved projects.

  3. Independent showrooms face several major challenges.
    The first is keeping products current and attracting consumers. The second are factors outside of their control, including supply chain/ product availability, recession, inflation and labor shortages.

  4. Many independent showrooms are evolving. Within the past two years, 65 percent of showrooms carried new brands, 53 percent remodeled their showroom, 50 percent added or improved their technology, and 40 percent added new product categories.

  5. Technology is key to independent showrooms success.They are turning to technology to improve the customer shopping experience and to help make their own operations more efficient. In the past two years alone, about 41 percent of showrooms enhanced their monitors/displays, and 30 percent updated their design software/hardware.

  6. Independent showroom sales have remained steady.
    Of the independent K&B showrooms surveyed, 70 percent reported 2022 annual sales of over $1 million, while 22 percent noted sales of $5 million or more.

  7. Independent showrooms are positive about the future. Despite uncertain economic conditions that continue to impact new construction and remodeling, independent showroom dealers project 2023 sales to be on par with 2022 and 2021.

  8. Homeowners frequently turn to independent showrooms.More than one-third of homeowners visited an independent K&B showroom for ideas and design inspiration. Additionally, seven in 10 homeowners start their K&B remodeling project by consulting with a  showroom/store (23 percent), a designer (24 percent), or a builder/contractor (24 percent).

  9. Homeowners want to see K&B products in person before buying.
    Two-thirds of homeowners also reported that they upgraded their purchase after learning about product features and functionality as well as available brands. These estimated upgrades reportedly added 31 percent to the cost of products purchased for a full-scale kitchen or bath remodel.

  10. Those who shopped at an independent showroom also made their final purchase there. Only 6 percent did not. Additionally, two-thirds of the showroom professionals surveyed reported a conversion rate of 50 percent or more, with the median conversion rate being 64 percent.

Kohler Releases ESG Report: Kohler Co. has published its 2022 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report, detailing the company’s progress and goals in environmental sustainability, social impact and diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Among the highlights, it achieved a 16 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, a 10 percent reduction in water and a 23 percent reduction in waste. Additionally, Kohler Kitchen and Bath continued to lead in U.S. EPA WaterSense-labeled offerings by certifying 85 new products across toilets, bathroom faucets and showerheads. KBB has the full story.

Rev-A-Shelf Expands in Mexico: Rev-A-Shelf, a leader in kitchen organization and storage solutions, has opened a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Juarez, Mexico. The new plant is nearly 126,000 square feet with room for future expansion and employs more than 60 workers. It currently produces 54 wood products, including drop-in drawer inserts, dovetail pantry drawers and other wood components and accessories, and it is expected that it will expand manufacturing by an additional 30 products early next year. KBB has more.

Gaggenau Hosts BJS Dinners: Premier appliance maker Gaggenau hosted the first of its 2023 Black Jacket Society dinners in Miami in May, a series celebrating some of the country’s most distinguished chefs. At the Miami event, Chef Alain Verzeroli of the Bastion Collection (L′Atelier de Jöel Robuchon and Le Jardinier) and Chef Juan Manuel Barrientos of Elcielo were inducted into the Black Jacket Society, which recognizes chefs whose restaurants have attained Michelin Guide status and who reflect the principles and philosophy of the Gaggenau brand. Additional 2023 Black Jacket Society events will be in locations in California, New York, Chicago and Washington, DC, and they will be held in conjunction with the Michelin Guide Ceremonies. More on the evening here.

EPA May Change WaterSense Criteria: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is considering changing the requirements for tank-type toilets to earn its WaterSense label. OBITUARY: Drummond Shaw: The founder of Drummonds Bathrooms, Drummond Shaw, passed away on June 28 at his home in Dorset, England. He was 73. After a career as a commodity broker in London, he founded Drummonds in 1988, when he was restoring his period house and had difficulty finding authentic architectural antiques, especially for the bathroom. Drummonds has grown to become a high-end UK-based manufacturer and distributor of classic bathroom products, with three factories producing cast-iron baths, brass fittings and porcelain sanitary ware. It has showrooms in London’s Chelsea and in New York, in the Architects & Designers Building.

Cruising With Southern New England: The Southern New England Chapter is taking members on a Connecticut River Cruise this Thursday, July 27, from 5:30 to 8 pm. Journey with RiverQuest to learn about the river’s ecology, history and life, mingle with friends and colleagues and earn 0.1 CEU. Member News: Rev-A-Shelf’s Noe Retires, Whirlpool’s Climate Honor, New Facility Roundup, Chapter Updates and More

Rev-A-Shelf Taps Jones as Noe Sets Retirement: David P. Noe, general manager and VP of sales and marketing for Rev-A-Shelf, is retiring after more than four decades with the shelving, storage and organizing specialist. He will stay on until Dec. 31 to ensure a smooth transition, when Steve M. Jones Jr., currently vice president of consumer sales, will become the new general manager, assuming responsibility for day-to-day operations, more than 500 employees and managing the sales, marketing, operations and product development teams. Additionally, Rob Jenkins, director of OEM sales and marketing, will be promoted to vice president of sales and marketing. Under Noe’s leadership, Rev-A-Shelf acquired Tresco Lighting, Lazy Daisy and Sidelines and expanded with a global headquarters in Louisville, KY, and a plant in Mexico. Noe also held positions on a number of industry committees and boards, including NKBA’s Leadership Recruitment Committee and KBIS Exhibitor Committee. KBB has the details.

Whirlpool Named as a Climate Leader: Whirlpool Corp., parent of top appliance brands including KitchenAid, Maytag, InSinkErator, JennAir and Whirlpool, was recognized by USA Today as one of “America’s Climate Leaders” for 2023. The company has long been committed to reaching net zero emissions at all its facilities by 2030. Over the past year, Whirlpool achieved “Zero Waste to Landfill” Gold or Platinum status at all 29 of its largest manufacturing sites worldwide. This achievement reflects a diversion rate of more than 95 percent of its waste at these sites. Whirlpool continues to invest in plant efficiency and waste reduction, by working closely with recyclers and sustainability vendors, to eliminate waste and contribute to the circular economy. Virginia Tile Growing in Indianapolis: Michigan-based Virginia Tile is broadening operations into Indiana with a new location in Indianapolis, which will feature a state-of-the-art full service showroom and a warehouse and shipping branch with a user-friendly order and pick-up desk and a fully stocked warehouse of tile and installation materials. Construction is expected to be completed in phases, with the showroom scheduled to open in the fall. The Indianapolis branch will serve as the third hub for servicing other Virginia Tile locations. The company was founded in 1928 in Virginia and is now based in Livonia, MI, serving 14 Midwestern states with 20 distribution centers. Learn more here.

Häfele Completes NC Expansion: Häfele America Co. has completed a $13 million addition to its distribution center in Archdale, NC, increasing the facility’s storage capacity by 60 percent. The new facility has an additional 94,200 square feet and features a 501 kW solar electric system comprising more than 1,100 panels that provides some 75 percent of its power needs. Häfele America is a subsidiary of Germany-based Häfele and a global supplier of decorative and architectural hardware components for cabinets, furniture, LED lighting, smart-home technology, doors, drawers and more. Woodshop News has more.

Bigger Kitchens, Smaller Homes, Tossing Tubs: In a recent survey from housing research specialist John Burns Real Estate Consulting and ProBuilder, architects predicted some shifts in residential floor plans in the near future. First, even though houses are getting smaller, kitchens are becoming larger, with more emphasis on casual dining. Often this means island seating takes precedence over formal dining rooms. Second, primary suites are also getting larger, endowed with walk-in closets, big en-suite bathrooms and large showers replacing bathtubs. Finally, outdoor dining areas are becoming must-haves, so it’s important for builders and designers to carve out a patio area. See JBREC for more details.

More Lights in Vegas: When KBIS returns to Las Vegas Feb. 27 to 29, a new architectural achievement will be dotting the famous landscape. The MSG Sphere, designed by stadium specialist Populous, is the world’s largest spherical structure, 515 feet wide and more than 100 feet high. Lights cover more than 580,000 square feet of its surface, creating the largest LED screen in the world. The venue was fully lit for the first time on July 4th this year. It will have a capacity of 20,000 and will host multi-sensory live entertainment and concerts, with U2 scheduled as the first performance in September. The structure is owned by MSG, the same company that owns Madison Square Garden. Dezeen has more.

10 Takeaways from NKBA’s Mid-Year Market Update

Much has changed since January when the 2023 K&B Market Outlook was initially released.

NKBA released its 2023 Kitchen & Bath Market Outlook Update this week, which revises the forecasts made in the baseline report released in January. Since then, mortgage rates have remained elevated, but inflation has fallen and the economy and the job market continue to outperform expectations.

The report was publicly released on July 13 and is available free to NKBA members here. Key takeaways include:

  1. Residential K&B spend is expected to fall 5 percent to $179 billion in 2023 — below the record highs of 2022, but above pre-pandemic levels. The mid-year outlook is more positive relative to the earlier baseline due to an uptick in demand for new homes during the last three to four months.

  2. The long-term outlook for K&B remodels remains strong. This is due to several factors: an additional 2.2 million homes entering prime remodel years in the next five years; homeowners sitting on record levels of home equity; and repair and remodel (R&R) projects being deferred beyond 2023.

  3. Homeowners with lower mortgage rates are incentivized to remodel versus sell. About 80 percent of outstanding mortgages are locked in at rates below 5 percent, which is far lower than current rates and driving them to stay put.

  4. New construction K&B spend is forecasted at $111 billion in 2023, a decline of 4 percent from the start of the year. This forecast is more optimistic than the earlier baseline prediction of $96 billion, primarily driven by a 10 percent decline in housing starts.

  5. Our forecast for repair and remodel spend is $68 billion, a decline of 8 percentage points from the beginning of 2023. The decline is in large part due to high inflation, which continues to erode excess household savings, which was the primary driver of R&R spending during the pandemic. Higher interest rates have also made it less appealing to tap into home equity, diminishing another source of R&R funding. One bright spot, however, is that higher income households are less rate-sensitive and continue investing in luxury K&B remodels.

  6. Professional spend in 2023 is expected to fall 5 percent, while DIY declines 7 percent. Since the PRO spend measure includes new home construction, this decline is forecast to be smaller than DIY because of the recent surge in new construction. We also forecasted that $154.9 billion of PRO spending will be driven by new construction and high-spend remodels in 2023.

  7. Housing units under construction remain elevated at 1.7 million, and are expected to drive demand for K&B installs in new construction. And despite improving cycle times, under construction units are at record levels.

  8. With one million multi-family units under construction, the share of multi-family units will increase in 2023 and temper K&B spend. The forecast number of multi-family units for late July is 994,000 and is 695,000 for single-family units.

  9. Household savings rates have significantly declined from pre-pandemic era-highs and remain below pre-pandemic levels. As a result, the excess savings that helped the remodeling boom has decreased significantly and is trending lower.

  10. The risk of recession remains. The probability of a recession over the next 12 months remains elevated at 61 percent, according to the Wall Street Journal Forecasting Survey. And the Fed could implement another one to two rate hikes this year to achieve its target of 2 percent inflation, which would likely slow down the economy.

Daltile Parent Recognized for Climate Action: Mohawk Industries, parent of leading tile manufacturers Daltile, Marazzi and American Olean, was named to USA Today’s “America’s Climate Leaders” list, owing in large part to its tile brands’ 17 percent reduction in their carbon footprint since 2018. Among their achievements: more than 99 percent of their tile collections contain recycled or reclaimed materials; the factories recover and reuse 84 percent of process wastewater; all tiles are made from exclusively natural materials with no plastics, VOCs, PVCs or formaldehyde; and they recycle an average of 68 tons of cardboard and office paper a year. KBB has more.

LG Earns Sustainability Honors: LG Electronics has been named the most sustainable home appliance brand in the 2023 “Green Builder Sustainable Brand Index.” The top ranking is based on data collected by surveying builders and consumers on how they regard a product and/or a company. Additionally, LG earned two 2023 Green Builder “Sustainable Products of the Year” distinctions, which recognize manufacturing, technology and sustainability innovations, for its LG Multi F MAX with LGRED° multi-zone heat pump HVAC system and LG Studio induction cooktop with a flex cooking zone. Fortune Brands Acquires Hardware, Lock Businesses: Fortune Brands Innovations has completed its acquisition of the Emtek and Schaub premium and luxury door and cabinet hardware business, and the U.S. and Canadian Yale and August residential smart home locks business from ASSA ABLOY, for a purchase price of $800 million. Fortune said Emtek and Schaub have strong distribution networks with leading channel partners and will be a synergistic complement to the House of Rohl suite of brands, allowing the company to expand into adjacent product areas. Fortune’s growing brand portfolio includes Moen, House of Rohl, Aqualisa, Therma-Tru, Larson, Fiberon, Master Lock and SentrySafe. More details here.

Survey on Aging in Place: An overwhelming 93 percent of American adults say they plan to age in place, increasing the need for accessible design and health-related home technologies, according to a new national survey from U.S. News & World Report. Among the report’s highlights, 49 percent of respondents who use the technology say general aging is their primary reason for adopting its use, but other reasons — like mobility, hearing or vision impairments and cognition — are close behind. Two of the most widely used technologies include medical or health-related apps (25 percent) and wearable medical or health-related trackers (17 percent), and 88 percent said assistive or health-related technologies have improved their quality of life. KBB has the details.

Catching Up With K&B Rising Star, Beatriz Hernandez Padron

Padron, NKBA member and past first place winner of NKBA’s student design competition, talks about her career journey and how the association has helped along the way.

Beatriz Hernandez Padron, current NKBA member, past NKBA student member and first place winner of NKBA’s 2021-2022 Student Design Competition, is making a splash in the K&B industry only months after graduating from Bow Valley College, where she completed the Kitchen and Bath Design program.

As first place winner of 2022’s competition, Padron has received much recognition in the industry. Shortly after graduation, Hygge Home Design, of Calgary, Alberta, an NKBA Member, was thrilled to hire her. Padron has also been celebrated locally, and is now the face of Bow Valley College, appearing in advertisements and billboards for the school throughout the area.

NKBA sat with Padron to learn more about her recent successes, her professional trajectory and how the association has made a difference in her education and career.

How has being an NKBA student member been beneficial to your educational pursuits?

At Bow Valley College, they taught me all of the NKBA’s guidelines, which made a huge difference in my education as a designer. These guidelines require even more knowledge and ability than the industry standard guidelines, so they provide you with a great foundation you can use both in your education and your career.

Being an NKBA student member also provided me with a great community — which was a resource in itself. There are so many industry professionals with varied backgrounds who work with so many different design styles. You can really get an insight into how the minds of these designers work. And they’re also a resource. You can learn from your community all about different design styles, and so much of what you can do when it comes to using technology or making spaces more sustainable. And you can learn about the trades, too.

I see that you studied architecture as an undergraduate, then migrated to design. What led you to focus more on design as opposed to architecture?

I really love architecture — that’s really my passion, it’s really my love. But when I was studying architecture, I found I was challenged by much of what interior designers did, like selecting furniture, for example. I wanted to learn more. So it made sense, after studying architecture, to move forward with my education so I could build up my interior design knowledge.

I started by taking an interior design course in the Dominican Republic, where I’m from. But I still wanted to do more. Learn more specific skills. And I wanted to study something that would combine the technical skills I already used in architecture —  where you focus a lot on the electrical, HVAC, and construction —  while also learning more about interior design. And K&B does just that, combining interior design with the technical, since you’re making decisions about appliances, finishes, space planning, plumbing and more. So it was the right fit for me.

What was your experience like, entering for  —  and winning  —  NKBA’s student design competition?

I had a lot of fun working on my design, I was playing a lot with the fashion aspect of it. So I wasn’t focusing on winning  —  I was focusing on having fun! When I entered the competition, I wasn’t expecting to win, so when I did, I couldn’t believe it!

Winning has been great for my career. I’ve gotten a lot of media attention because of it here in Canada. And at the interior design company where I work now, most of the clients know who I am from my interview I did with Bow Valley College. It all happened so fast, it’s been a whirlwind of success!

How has the NKBA helped your career?

The NKBA has taught me a lot of what I use now in my career. I learned how to make great kitchen and bath designs, using techniques such as space planning and following NKBA guidelines. I use all this foundational knowledge, put it into practice, in my current job. It’s part of me, I would say.
