Fridges, Ranges, Dishwashers & More: An Expert Installer’s Guide to Specifying Kitchen Appliances

When:

October 18, 2023

Presenter:

Rebecca West, CEO, Seriously Happy Homes
Damian Konasiewicz, CEO, Damian John Installations

CEUs: .1
What You Will Learn

Do you ant to avoid last-minute remodeling nightmares that come when your new kitchen is nearly complete but the new fridge, range, or dishwasher won’t actually fit?

In this interview-style session expert appliance installer Damian Konasiewicz, CEO of Damian John Installations, will share what he’s learned over 25 years of appliance install experience to better equip *you* to specify the right kitchen appliances, read the specs, and carefully manage your cabinet makers so they get the cabinet openings right *the first time* – no matter what brand of appliances you specify. Armed with just a little more information you can avoid ending up with openings that are too small, exhaust fans that can’t be vented, gas lines that need to be rerouted, and other remodeling horror stories.
By the end of this session you might just know more about appliance selection than your appliance salespeople!

The interview will be led by Rebecca West of Seriously Happy Homes, and advance questions can be submitted to her at rebecca@seriouslyhappy.com. If you have a question about a specific appliance, be sure to include the brand and model number for the most accurate answers to your questions!

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn what kinds of questions to ask, and what to pay attention to, when choosing appliances based on site conditions within, above, below, and next to the space you’re remodeling.
  • Understand how to read the specs to make sure appliances will both fit in the opening and function properly.
  • Get familiar with how code, and code updates, can *really* complicate an appliance install – especially when trying to replace like-and-kind but not doing a whole home remodel.

willingness to try. Since 2002 Damian and his team have helped thousands of homeowners and commercial builders successfully install hundreds of thousands of kitchen and laundry appliances. They’ve established solid relationships with brands from Maytag to Miele, GE to Gaggenau, and Whirlpool to Wolf, making sure to keep up with all available certifications and keeping current with code updates. If you have a question about how to install an appliance – Damian’s probably got the answer! A New Jersey native, he’s an avid traveler and eager chef who happily tolerates his wife’s love of costume parties.

Confident, Collaborative Leadership: What to Control, When to Collaborate, How to Stay Confident

When:

October 2, 2023

Presenter:

Rebecca West, CEO, Seriously Happy Homes

CEUs: .1
What You Will Learn

Do you feel confident in your role as a leader? When you need to trust others to do their job, do you feel like you’re able to get the results you need – without micromanaging your team members? Do your clients, contractors, and team members trust you as a leader, and get you what you need, when you need it? Or do you feel like you’re always chasing people for things you’ve asked them for? Worse, do you feel like folks dismiss you, even when you *try* to lead?

People love to follow great leaders! Great leaders provide a clear vision for the outcome of a project, and create confidence in both the end goal and the journey. They make sure everyone knows what the team is trying to accomplish, and ensure that everyone has the tools they need to succeed, without micromanaging every detail. But great leadership starts long before we start assigning tasks to others. Our behaviors, words, and choices either establish us as a leader (making it easier to succeed), *or* they undermine our position as a leader (making it harder than it has to be to get things done).

Ready to step up as a great leader, feel proud of your team, and be trusted by your team members? Let’s make sure that your approach to leadership (including the words you use, the behaviors you model, and the decisions you make) help the whole team succeed together. Whether you have an official title as a leader, or simply want to step up as a leader in your current role, this webinar will give you the confidence to take charge, especially when there is no clear leader in the room.

Learning Objectives:

  • You will be able to determine what is in your influence, and how can you control the outcome without micromanaging the journey.
  • Learn tips that cement your authority while elevating your team members (be they employees, clients, or contractors).
  • Identify words and behaviors that might undermine your authority, and level up your confidence as a leader.

How To Meet Your Client’s Smart Home Needs & Questions

When:

September 12, 2023

Presenter:

Josh Christian , CEO, Home Technology Association

CEUs: .1
What You Will Learn

Technology is increasingly woven into the fabric of our everyday lives. The pandemic made this reality even more noticeable with so many suddenly working and learning from home, creating more demand for more home technology. Beyond entertainment technologies like audio/video and media rooms, the peace of mind supplied by security systems and surveillance cameras, and the requirement for reliable and secure Wi-Fi, clients increasingly want their home to be “smart”. What exactly is a “smart home” and how do I answer my clients’ questions about smart home options? How does this affect my kitchen and bath design? How much do these home technologies cost? Who should install it? How does this affect the aesthetic design of the project, and what other trades might be affected?

This webinar will answer the above questions and empower you to have confident conversations with your client about how to approach their home tech needs. By having a plan on how to deal with the home’s low-voltage technologies, not only are you providing valuable guidance and insights to your clients, but your projects will also benefit aesthetically. In the past, designers were happy if the home’s technologies didn’t create an eyesore, though today’s proactive designer understands that properly designed and specified home technology can instead beautify a space and make the entire home more user-friendly.

This course will share the scope of technologies that professional home technology integrators install and how to find and work with one that understands you and your clients’ needs.

During this session, you will:

  • Gain the confidence and simple tools needed to quickly evaluate their clients’ technology requirements.
  • Establish why a technology integrator should be a key resource for kitchen and bath designers and why to engage integrators early.
  • Share how to find qualified home technology integrators that are used to working with design professionals.
Featured Presenter

NKBA Hosts Second Students of the Industry Night

The association again invited local college professors and students to learn about membership benefits and connect with industry professionals.
NKBA CEO Bill Darcy and Kelly Ann Ryan, NKBA Learning Programs Manager, with students and faculty from Northampton Community College and Mid Atlantic Chapter President Brianna Weiler, of New Hope Cabinets, Baths & Kitchens by Charles Weiler, at NKBA’s second Students of the Industry night on Sept. 27, 2023, at the association’s headquarters in Bethlehem, PA.

By Elisa Fernández-Arias

Last month, NKBA invited college students and professors from local colleges, as well as chapter officers, to its second of two Students of the Industry Night events this year. Held on Sept. 27 at the association’s headquarters in Bethlehem, PA, this event was an opportunity for students to discover more about NKBA student membership, learning initiatives such as badges and certifications, and much more.

The event, attended by Northampton Community College faculty and students, is an example of the foundation NKBA builds to support students in the industry so that they can flourish in their future K&B careers. The students also had the opportunity to speak with Mid Atlantic Chapter President Brianna Weiler, of New Hope Cabinets, Baths & Kitchens by Charles Weiler, and two designers from Morris Black Designs, Christine Shorr, CKBD, Mid Atlantic Chapter member and Marissa Monte, Susquehanna Valley Chapter member.

The night started off with Kelly Ann Ryan, NKBA Learning Programs Manager, welcoming guests and introducing them to the association, explaining that NKBA is the world’s leading trade association for the kitchen and bath industry and owner of KBIS. She then outlined the benefits of joining NKBA as a student member, which is free thanks to sponsorship from Sub-Zero Group, Inc., and how entering the Student Design Competition, sponsored by Fisher & Paykel, can raise their profile. She also noted how students can continue to benefit from NKBA membership even beyond graduation.

The event ended with networking, where students had a chance to ask questions to and seek advice from Brianna Weiler.

“I was very excited to meet the Interior Design students from Northampton Community College and speak with them on a personal level. I could easily relate to them and wanted to share my experiences of being involved with the NKBA for nearly a decade, beginning as a student studying Interior Design and now as a Design Professional within the Kitchen & Bath Industry. I sincerely look forward to seeing the talent and creativity of these particular students when I join Asst. Professor Daniel Ebner in critiquing their design projects,” said Weiler.

NKBA Kitchen Trends Summit A Success

Attendees toured the building, saw product demos and learned about future kitchen trends at GE Appliances’ new CoCREATE space in Stamford, CT.

NKBA’s recent Kitchen Trends Summit at GE Appliances’ CoCREATE space in Stamford, CT focused on what consumers want in a kitchen now and in the future, with a mix of programming that featured a focus group, a one-on-one talk, and an expert panel discussion. Attendees of the event also received personalized tours of the new space that Michelle Donovan, Director, Marketing for GE Appliances, described as a “community creative playground”.  The CoCREATE space, which officially opened last Friday, includes coworking spaces and a resource area for designers.

Those who attended the event, including a large group from NKBA’s Manhattan Chapter, received a pre-opening walk-through of CoCREATE’s different areas including The Experience Center, The Maker Space and The Factory. Afterwards, attendees gathered to hear “One on One with Sarah Robertson, AKBD, Studio Dearborn: What do Consumers Really Want from the Design of their Kitchen?”. In the conversation with NKBA’s Pamela McNally, Robertson discussed clients’ evolving needs, notably functionality and storage. “People are seeing beyond the aesthetics now,” said Robertson.

The Kitchen of the Future Panel at NKBA’s Kitchen Trends Summit featured, from left: Tricia Zach, NKBA’s Head of Research; Marc Hottenroth, Executive Director, Industrial Design at GE Appliances; Kimberly Platt, CKBD, of JWH Design & Cabinetry LLC; and Julie Schuster, NKBA Manhattan Chapter President, of Julie Schuster Design Studio.

Next, attendees learned about “The Kitchen of the Future,” with panelists Marc Hottenroth, Executive Director, Industrial Design at GE Appliances; Kimberly Platt, CKBD, of JWH Design & Cabinetry LLC; and Julie Schuster, NKBA Manhattan Chapter President and member of NKBA’s Chapter Leadership Committee, of Julie Schuster Design Studio. Moderated by Tricia Zach, Head of Research at NKBA, the panel discussed topics ranging from influences driving future kitchen design to the customization of design. Noted Schuster: “I’m seeing many people interested in making the kitchen look like them.”

Accessory Dwelling Units are the hottest topic in Real Estate, Construction, and Design. With states like California, Oregon, New York and cities like Austin, Denver, and Chicago throughout the US changing housing laws and zoning to accommodate secondary dwellings. This has created a demand for ADU’s and options for homeowners who can and want to create an ADU on their property.

Cities are essentially allowing homeowners to become mini developers and build multifamily homes on the lots and homes where they already live and own. The options are unlimited and the opportunities expanding, and everyone is noticing they have more options than ever when it comes to building a custom space that accommodates all their needs. Whether a space for guests, family members, a home office, residential rental space or at home schooling. These are just a few options and reasons to build an ADU and reasons why ADU’ are so appealing.

ADU’s can be an investment in your, and our future. The future of cities and neighborhoods are being changed to create inclusive spaces that build community, innovation, and opportunity. An investment for our families, an opportunity to create generational wealth, and a retirement opportunity/plan aside from traditional forms of investment. They complement a variety of lifestyles and demonstrate the importance of design when building these smaller structures. Smaller spaces are generally more environmentally sustainable, and when building a secondary unit many homeowners and builders can use better products to reduce a home and families carbon footprint.

During this session, you will:

Describe what ADU’s are, the many terminologies used to describe them and why the building trends of ADU’s are not going away.
Discover how ADU’s will change the conversation about small living spaces, sustainable living, and design, and the creation of affordable housing.
Assess how ADU’s will benefit the homeowners and families financially and in their health and wellness.

Prime patio season is right around the corner, and outdoor entertaining will once again take center stage. Last summer was a banner year for backyard renovations, and we forecast even greater demand in 2022 and beyond. The great outdoors offers extended living space, a semblance of escape, and a safe place to come together.

Outdoor living is becoming a three-season or, in some cases, all-season affair. Adding an outdoor patio heater, fireplace, or three-season room extends the season. Draw inspiration from your favorite resorts with amenities that will keep clients comfortable under the stars. For larger estates, consider a secondary easy-access grill near the home for evening grilling.

Outdoor kitchens are more attainable than ever. There is a plethora of options in the world of outdoor kitchens and entertaining. Learn more about trending outdoor kitchen appliances, including gas and wood- fired pizza ovens, gas and alternate-fuel grills, wine coolers, and cocktail stations. Explore products that tailor to clients’ cooking styles, storage needs, and entertainment preferences. Whether you’re specifying a massive renovation or simply adding a grill to the backyard, personalizing your outdoor living area is an investment that can make a world of difference.

During this session, you will:

Establish the value of adding an outdoor kitchen to clients and other key constituencies.
Define outdoor appliances across five major categories: grilling, specialty cooking, cooling, storage, and clean-up.
Identify hot outdoor kitchen trends such as outdoor appliances with custom color and hardware, adding heaters to extend the season and a greater focus on permanent structures.
