The designer and NKBA member was 38 years old.

Mark Cayen of Empire Kitchen & Bath and a member of the NKBA | KBIS Prairie Provinces Chapter in Canada passed away on July 6. He was 38 years old.

“Mark was a brilliant designer and dedicated member of our Prairie Provinces Chapter,” said Nadine Hawkins, account manager at Berenson Inc. and president of the Prairie Provinces Chapter.  “He was generous with his time and used it to inspire and engage many young designers coming into our industry.  Visits with Mark were always a favorite stop on our tours, leaving students in awe. We will all miss his humor, wit, and immense talent.”

An NKBA member since 1997, Cayen won third place in the association’s 2021 Design & Industry Awards for the traditional kitchen category. “Winning third place means a lot because my design was recognized by my peers… I love [that] kitchen. It has to be one of my favorite kitchens that I’ve ever designed,” said Cayen in an interview about the award with his alma mater, Lakeland College, Vermilion, AB, Canada.

“Beyond accolades and awards, Mark generously dedicated time and expertise to nurturing the next generation of interior designers,” said Rochelle Horne, IDT, CKBD, Leed Green Associate, who is an instructor and Program Head of Interior Design Technology Trades &  Technology at Lakeland College. “His passion and dedication have not only reshaped spaces but has also sculpted careers and inspired countless aspiring designers.’
