What You Will Learn

Designers have learned to specify wellness. Air quality, daylighting, and low-VOC materials are now routine decisions documented in the plan. Water is the exception — still left to the homeowner to solve after move-in, usually with a pitcher on the counter or a case of bottles in the pantry that undercuts the design just delivered. This session gives kitchen and bath professionals the technical vocabulary to close that
gap.

Participants will learn which drinking water contaminants are undetectable by taste, smell, or appearance and why they are regulated; how to read and verify a filtration certification under NSF/ANSI 42, 53, and 401; how whole-home treatment, reverse osmosis, and point-of-use filtration differ in coverage, footprint, and maintenance; and how the five point-of-use delivery formats, from under-sink kits to in-wall dispensers, differ in installation requirement and design impact.

The session also examines dispensers as an emerging residential category. Because a dispenser is not tied to a sink, it turns water access from a fixture schedule item into a floor plan decision, opening rooms that have never had hydration access. Participants leave able to locate water access points by lifestyle zone and place rough-in requirements at the correct project phase.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain why drinking water belongs alongside air, light, and materials in a residential wellness strategy, and why daily interaction frequency gives it disproportionate weight.
  • Identify the contaminant categories undetectable by taste, smell, or appearance, and describe their exposure pathways in language that is accurate and defensible to a client.
  • Locate water access across lifestyle zones, select a delivery format, place rough-in at the correct project phase, and evaluate value-engineering changes against the project’s stated wellness goals.
