What You Will Learn

Smart Home Technology is quickly becoming the new normal with new home builds, remodels, and new technologies steadily emerging. Due to the high adoption rate and volume of sales, the costs associated with integrating this technology into an Aging in Place Design is significantly less than before. Previously, technologies were primarily used on luxury properties as a convenience but more recently, the use of smart home technology is the key reason people are able to stay in their own homes rather than moving to a facility.

In this session, Carol Chiang, OTR/L, CAPS, ECHM, CHAMP, will guide attendees through what it means to utilize smart home design with aging in place in mind and how designers can implement new technologies for a healthier, safer home for all.

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of what skills are needed to assist aging in place successfully.
  • Learn and be able to list 5 Basic Smart Home Technologies that can decrease the fall risk in older adults.
  • Learn how to identify the most beneficial technologies for clients who use a wheelchair full time.
