Inside the NKBA Kitchen & Bath Pro Hub, industry professionals connect and actively share their insights from the ever-evolving world of design. This includes lively discussions about current design trends. Recently, the topic was outdoor living.

The consensus: outdoor design has shifted from an optional luxury upgrade to a high-expectation standard. Clients now expect outdoor spaces to function as self-sufficient, year-round, indoor-equivalent living areas. However, professionals face significant hurdles in balancing these luxury visions with budget and structural realities.

Here are the key themes that emerged from the Hub discussions:

1. Top Client Demands & Features

Data shows a massive preference for culinary and covered spaces over other upgrades.

  • The Ultimate Hub: Outdoor Kitchens/Grills are the undisputed #1 priority, driving 40% of standard feature demands and 43% of upgrade requests.
  • The Baseline Expectations: Beyond kitchens, clients expect a comprehensive “Core Five” setup:
    • Comfort: High-end seating that replicates indoor hospitality.
    • Shelter: Covered/shaded structures for weather protection (15–16% of demand).
    • Atmosphere: Layered, smart-integrated lighting (16% of demand).
    • Multifunctionality: Single footprints that support dining, lounging, and entertaining at the same time.
2. Key Challenges & Friction Points

Designers are battling a major gap between what clients want and what is realistic.

  • The Main Roadblocks: Budget constraints (32%) and weather/climate limitations (32%) tie as the biggest hurdles in outdoor design, followed by site limitations (14%).
  • The Education Gap: Clients routinely underestimate logistics (permitting, HOAs, plumbing/electrical) and fail to realize the strict maintenance requirements of outdoor-rated materials versus indoor ones.
  • The Sticker Shock: A consistent tension exists between high-end luxury expectations and actual “all-in” construction costs.
3. Emerging Lifestyle Drivers
  • Active Wellness: High-investment clients are moving past simple relaxation toward active recovery features like saunas, cold plunges, and contrast therapy circuits.
  • Reclaimed Square Footage: Spaces are designed as primary venues for hosting, effectively acting as extensions of the home’s footprint.
  • Extreme Durability: Due to regional climate shifts, low-maintenance, high-performance materials (like HDPE cabinetry and stainless steel) are now non-negotiable.
