Digging Deep into Sustainability

As leaders in the construction industry, it is important to not only deliver exceptional projects to our clients, but also to introduce them to sustainability as a concept and the impact design choices on their projects have on the world at large. To do this, we first must educate ourselves as design professionals about what sustainability truly means.

There is a lot of greenwashing of products and materials in our current market that can be difficult to decipher and this presentation will start by teaching you how to sift through the “noise” manufacturers present to the industry about their products. There are various sustainable certifications, but what are they certifying? Who are they protecting, the planet or manufacturers? Participants will explore various sustainable building and finish materials, learning how to dig deep and uncover the truth about them using Lifecycle Assessment methodology. Real-world examples will illustrate hurdles our design team has had to overcome and how sustainability can be integrated into your design projects for healthier outcomes.

To truly lead as design professionals in sustainability, we must also be adept at communicating these concepts to clients. This part of the presentation will provide effective strategies for introducing sustainability to clients, emphasizing its benefits and long-term value to them and how their decisions can affect human health, the health of the planet, or both. Additionally, participants will learn how to create and implement sustainability standards within their own companies that can be incorporated into every project.

By the end of this presentation, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to make informed, sustainable design decisions in their kitchen and bath design projects, while also driving positive change with their clients, their company, and, by extension, the entire construction industry.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how to deep dive and research sustainability thorough.
  • Learn how to bring up the topic of sustainability with your clients with confidence.
  • Learn how to set standards and incorporate sustainability into your company.
