“Today outdoor spaces are an extension of the people who live there,” said Thom Filicia, sitting in the Broad Hall Terrace next to Azzurro Living partner Brandon Kershner.
“Materials have evolved so much,” added Kershner. “They work inside as much as outside. We started with boring solid canvas. But now we have so much texture.”
Filicia noted that the materials designed for outdoors are so beautiful, we’re finding them indoors.
“There’s this interesting layering that makes it feel connected and coherent,” said Filicia, who said he favors designs rooted in a timeless silhouette and style, but with a modern, fresh take. So for the Azzurro Collection, he decided he wanted pieces that created that layering effect he loved for himself and his clients.
“Thom brought in some really cool ideas such as oversized tables and wall consoles that were missing in our line up. I’m more product driven, so Thom’s layering in product design was something I definitely appreciated,” added Kershner.
Both Filicia and Kershner are highly appreciative of the collaborative effort that extends beyond the two of them.
“When you go to the factories and meet with the people doing the upholstery or weaving, it’s incredible not only to see these artisans at work, but it’s amazing the feedback they give you and the knowledge they have for making furniture,” said Filicia. “They really bring so much to it. It amazes me how many people are involved in making all this happen.”
