Happening in the Hub: Market + Labor

Latest Insights From The Kitchen & Bath Pro Hub

Inside the NKBA Kitchen & Bath Pro Hub, industry professionals connect and actively share their insights from the ever-evolving world of design. This includes lively discussions about current design trends. Recent discussions have explored the market and labor challenges shaping the industry today, with four key themes emerging from the conversation:

1. Project pressure is coming from multiple directions

The message is clear: project timelines, skilled labor availability, and client budgets have formed a pressure trifecta affecting project delivery. Material availability, supply chain disruptions, permitting, and approval delays add further complexity. A shortage in one specialized trade can delay subsequent work, while finding a reliable replacement creates additional risk.

Material lead times can make the situation worse: even when labor is available, crews may be unable to proceed because critical products have not arrived. Permitting and municipal inspections introduce another variable that professionals often cannot control.

The message is clear: planning for contingencies is increasingly becoming part of standard project management.

2. Rising costs are changing the client conversation

Professionals reported rising costs for materials and skilled labor, along with additional pressures from freight, shipping, financing, and tariffs. It’s a double-edged sword as the increases put pressure on business margins while making consumers more hesitant to commit.

Clients are evaluating priorities more closely, delaying discretionary upgrades, reducing project scope and, in some cases, dividing larger renovations into phases. Others are requesting more detailed cost information before making a decision.

As a result, higher-end projects have shown greater resilience in some professionals’ pipelines. At the same time, entry-level and mid-market clients are more likely to pause, reduce scope, or seek more accessible alternatives.

For professionals, that creates an opportunity to rethink how products and services are packaged rather than treating a smaller budget as the end of the conversation.

3. AI Is Raising Expectations—and Creating New Challenges

It’s no surprise that technology is influencing the market from both sides of the client relationship.

Professionals described clients seeking products or materials shown in AI-generated imagery that do not exist in the marketplace. Inspiration-driven custom requests can also collide with construction feasibility and real-world budgets.

That makes expectation management increasingly important. Designers must help clients distinguish between visual inspiration and what is truly possible in a given space.

One recurring theme in the Pro Hub discussions was that growing interest in technology is occurring alongside—not instead of—a continued focus on personal relationships. Face-to-face interaction and word-of-mouth referrals continue to matter even as digital tools become more sophisticated.

Technology can help professionals visualize projects, communicate options, and create smarter living environments. But the professional’s ability to interpret those options, establish realistic expectations, and guide clients through difficult decisions remains distinctly human.
