The winning entries in NKBA’s professional Design Competition reflected a decidedly contemporary twist, with sleek, buffed surfaces, abundant integrated appliances and minimal fuss. But regardless of whether the projects were traditional or contemporary, they exuded elegance and a custom touch.

By Dianne M. Pogoda

The Professional Design Competition brings out the very best in design and function that the kitchen and bath industry has to offer. The most successful designers manage to integrate the best products, the most innovative technologies and most functional floor plans with stunning aesthetics… and they bring it in at budget, while keeping their clients happy – even through the rigors of renovation.

NKBA received hundreds of entries for the 2020-2021 competition, which was sponsored by design software firm 2020.

There were two stages of judging, first for the “WOW” factor, and then those finalists moved onto the second round, which evaluated aesthetics, graphic and presentation standards, creativity, safety and ergonomics, elements and principles of design and planning and adherence to NKBA Guidelines and Standards.

Judges included:

  • Charles R. “Rick” Beckham, CMKBD, Houston
  • Patricia Davis Brown, CMKBD, Patricia Davis Brown Design, Vero Beach, Fla.
  • Chelsie Butler, executive editor of KBB magazine, the official media partner of NKBA and KBIS
  • Paula Kennedy, CMKBD; Timeless Kitchen Design, Seattle
  • Kathryn Cowles, CKBD, KW Cowles Design, Milton, Fla.
  • Nick Ritota, CMKBD; Charlotte, N.C.
  • Cailin M. Thelen, CMKBD, Kitchen & Bath Concepts, Atlanta

Categories included large and small divisions for contemporary kitchen, contemporary bath, traditional kitchen and traditional bath. These winners receive $1,000 for third place, $1,500 for second place and $2,500 for first place. There were two specialty category winners this year – for Outdoor Kitchen and for Builder/Remodeler, which selects from all projects submitted by a builder/remodeler firm. These each won a $2,000 prize. The two grand-prize winners, for Best Overall Kitchen and Best Overall Bath, each took home $10,000.

The Design Competition + Industry Awards event at KBIS Virtual was sponsored by 2020 Spaces, Beko Appliances and House of Rohl. At KBIS Virtual on Friday, Feb. 12, NKBA EVP & CSO Suzie Williford will join Interior Design’s editor in chief, Cindy Allen, for a special edition of ID Live/Design TV to celebrate the awards and hear from some of the winners. Tune in here.

Co-designer: Whitney Mersman

PHOTOS: Werner Straube for Summer Thornton Design

Interior design by Summer Thornton of a Chicago Co-Op at Drake Tower, 179 East Lake Shore Drive. Kitchen features metal and glass entryway, antique table, and contrasting wood and lacquer cabinetry.

ROOM WITH A VIEW

Summer Thornton rearranged the structure and added windows in a Chicago co-op to give the owner magnificent views of the Windy City and Lake Michigan from the relocated kitchen. Modern and bold but consistent with the 1928 Benjamin Marshall building, the striking design is a balance of traditional and industrial style with dramatic oxblood accents, lacquered finishes  and tremendous storage and functionality.

At 11,000 square feet, this empty-nesters’ new-construction home is anything but a downsizing project, and Jennifer Stoner’s grand-scale kitchen and coffered ceilings stand up to every bit of it. To warm the white perimeter cabinets, Stoner used limed oak cabinetry on the sprawling island, a polished nickel custom hood with built-in patina and navy cabinets in the adjacent butler’s pantry for a sophisticated contrast.

Tanya Woods replaced a load-bearing wall with a dramatic walnut-wrapped header to open and reinvigorate this once-cramped galley. Details like classic white brick buoyed by 3D geometry and fine pinstriping, black mullions in windows and on cabinets and satin gold finishes add a vintage vibe. SMOKIN’ COOL

The smoky green Shaker cabinetry in this 1899 Presidio Heights Victorian home respects the era’s heritage, while adding plenty of storage for this young family’s modern needs. Tiffany Waugh prioritized function and ease of use for the children. An appliance garage helps minimize countertop clutter, and marble backsplash and counters add to the retro feeling. Custom magnetized cabinet panels allow for a family art gallery.

SHIP SHAPE

Soaring ceilings in the primary bathroom presented a proportion challenge in this new-construction, farmhouse-style home. Gina D’Amore Bauerle covered them with white shiplap and added heavy, oversized framed mirrors for visual weight and balance. Furniture-style vanities in warm gray wood soften the space, and a black-and-white claw foot tub is a focal point. The bathroom connects to an expansive closet and dressing area for a true luxury en suite.

SERENITY SET IN STONE

Reisa Pollard’s clients wanted a Zen-like, clutter-free sanctuary in this bathroom with 24-ft. ceilings. She melded indoors and outdoors with two levels of oversized windows, used natural stone and reclaimed barnwood on walls and black accents. Steampunk design, rooted in science fiction’s retro-meets-future obsession with technology,  was the inspiration for Jaque Bethe’s artful creation. BRONZE BEAUTY

To create a Spanish vibe in the powder room, Cynthia Garten selected a hand-crafted copper vessel sink from a local artisan, warm bronze tones and sound-buffering woods. A custom mirror in copper and Spanish-style tiles is a focal point.
